Psychology Undergraduate Advising would like to welcome you back to campus for the start of Spring 2016! As you get back in to gear, keep our office’s resources in mind. Some of you are returning from exciting summer experiences such as study abroad or internships or, for others, the less-exciting coursework and preparing for the GRE. No matter what your break consisted of, we can likely help you in moving forward! Advisors in our office are available for appointments year-round to assist with psychology course-selection and major progress, career and graduate school preparation and selection, and general engagement to make the most out of your time here. 2. Spring 2016 Hours & Availability
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated Drop-in Hours during the academic year. Due to high student demand the first 2 weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available on drop-ins from8:00-4:30 Monday-Thursday, and from 10:00-4:30 on Friday. Drop-in hours are a great time to get research contracts signed, and to ask 5-10 minute questions; longer issues will be referred to schedule a full appointment. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect on Tuesday, February 1st.Please see our website for more information on our Office Hours & Availability. 3. Research Assistant Needed for Political Psychology Lab
The Political Psychology Lab is looking for one undergraduate research assistant to start work immediately, earning research credit for PSY 5993. The RA will be assisting with managing studies on all different stages, including literature review, creating surveys, collecting data, cleaning data, and data analysis. The RA will be involved in one or more of the studies about political belief, morality and culture. The position runs during the Spring semester, with the opportunity to continue into the Fall. RAs will be expected to work approximately 9 hours per week (may vary across weeks). Strong candidates for this position will be conscientious, bright, motivated students interested in the research process. Preference will be given to students with previous research experience. 4. Spring Semester RA Position: Child Persistence, Motivation to Master the Environment, and Resilience
Our lab at the Institute of Child Development investigates the processes that help children who face adversity nonetheless attain resilient and adaptive outcomes. We are looking for Research Assistants who can help with an advanced coding project. The RA will gain significant research experience. Students of all majors are welcome to apply. This project may be of particular interest to students in the Departments of Psychology, Child Development, or Educational Psychology, and those interested in eventually applying to graduate school in psychology. Description of Activities: We have videotapes of young children interacting with various fun toys for 5 minutes. RAs watch the videos and code every 15 seconds of these videos on items such as "task orientation," "persistence," and "positive emotion," among others. This is an advanced coding system, and you will receive extensive training on the coding process in order to achieve reliability with the anchor coder, as well as ongoing support throughout the project. Your input into how the coding process can be modified and improved will also be welcomed. This project requires significant detail-orientation and a focus on precision. This position may be of particular interest to individuals who think they may be interested in graduate school and/or want to learn more about how research labs work. 5. Center for Visual Science Undergrad Fellowship Applications Open Now
The Center for Visual Science at the University of Rochester announces its 2016 Summer Research Fellowship Program in Vision Science. Undergraduates in their junior (3rd) year during the 2015-2016 academic year of baccalaureate studies interested in neuroscience, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and biomedical science are invited to join the Center for Visual Science for a summer of supervised laboratory training. Applicants will be selected based on academic achievements and an interest in pursuing graduate studies in science. Both US and foreign applications will be accepted. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2016. Notifications of acceptance or denial to the program will be sent by March 31, 2016. 6. 2016 Summer Internship Program at Columbia Business School
Columbia Business School is seeking outstanding applications for the 2016 Summer Research Internship program. The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and exposes the students to the world of business research. Several of the top interns have been selected to join CBS full-time as a full-time Research Associate and others have gone on to leading PhD programs. Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: finance, economics, marketing, management, decision sciences, operations, accounting, and data analytics. The internship program is designed for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior year and first year Masters students. The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). Up to two awards of $500 will be offered for Spring 2016. Spring 2016 application deadline is February 3rd, 2016. Notification Date: February 17th. 3. Child Psychology Lab Seeking Research Assistants
The Relationships Research Lab (Roisman) is currently seeking undergraduate RAs to work on The Development of Relationship Expectations across Childhood study. This research examines individual differences in the development of children’s expectations regarding relationships and knowledge of secure base scripts throughout childhood. Major responsibilities will include transcription of children’s narratives. Additional opportunities to gain research experience will be available, including opportunities to attend regular lab meetings and discuss ongoing and future research questions. Responsibilities will require approximately 10 hours per week (45 hours throughout the semester). We require a 3-credit commitment. Please email Prof. Roisman at roism001@umn.edu to express your interest in a position.
4. Registering for Research with a Child Psychology Faculty Member
If you are planning to work in a Child Development research lab (with a Faculty member from the Institute of Child Psychology) and register for CPsy 4994 credit, this experience may be used towards the Psychology major. In order to use CPsy 4994 for credit toward your psychology major, you must fill out a Psychology Undergraduate Research Contract and have it approved by Psychology Advising before the end of the 2nd week of the term. If you do not fill out an Psychology Undergraduate Research Contract by the deadline, the credit will not be applicable towards your Psychology major. If individuals are interested in starting earlier during January break, that would be great, but is definitely not required. 4. Fall Data Collection - $20/hour
This is a temporary opportunity for undergraduate students who are bilingual in English and Spanish to collect data for a mathematics assessment project. We are looking for responsible, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented students to help with data collection in schools. Data collectors will read and score a kindergarten and first-grade math assessment from a script and interact with children in the school setting. Payment is $20 an hour, with no reimbursement for mileage. (schools are located in Saint Louis Park, which is approximately 15 min from campus). Requirements: You must be fluent in English and Spanish. You need your own reliable transportation to get to-and-from schools. You must be available to work at least 3 full days (or 6 half days) between Jan 19th and February 12th, between the hours of 9am and 3pm, Monday - Friday. Must be available to attend a 2 hour training on the assessment. Applicants with experience working in schools with students from various backgrounds are preferred. 5. Paid Research Opportunity in the MN Center for Twin and Family Research
The Mn. Center for Twin and Family Research has an Undergraduate Research Assistant position available. The job will begin a.s.a.p. The position will be 10-15 hrs/week during academic year and the same during the summer. Salary is $10.51/hr. Qualifications include: must be undergraduate in a degree granting program, must have at least a 3.0 GPA, must have telephone experience, such as locating people, must have data entry experience, must be willing to work some evening and weekend hours, and must supply transcript and resume. 6. Summer Research Opportunity through DESRE - Deadline is January 15th
DESRE (Disparities Elimination Summer Research Experience) is a 6-week summer program at Georgia Southern University hosted by the Rural Health Research Institute in collaboration with the Center for Rural Health and Health Disparities at Mercer University. DESRE is a paid, hands-on research experience for undergraduate and graduate students. During the program, students engage in cutting-edge rural health disparities research and receive training in the unique factors associated with addressing health disparities. Students work with and learn from a team of experienced faculty researchers from both Georgia Southern University and Mercer University. The program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. 7. CPsy 4310 Special Topics: Monkey See, Monkey Do? Media Influences on Child Development
Media represents a pervasive influence on children’s lives. We are only just beginning to understand its’ impact on family and child well-being. New media influences emerge regularly and change quickly, and research in this area is growing rapidly. Developmental scientists have only recently begun to study the impact of media on cognitive, social, and emotional development. This developmental perspective is the focus of this course. Students will explore theoretical processes, contextual factors, and the influence of media on cognitive, social, and emotional development, from infancy through adolescence. Please contact Zack Haas (haas0126@umn.edu) for any questions. Note that with the exception of CPSY 3301 and CPSY 4303, CPSY courses do NOT count in the Psychology major.
