They'll also share important tips for making a smooth transition from school to the world of work and point out what they did as undergraduates that was helpful (or not!). This event can be useful for those early on in their undergraduate career as well as for those nearing graduation. Attend to learn more about the process and possibilities! 2.PSYCHOLOGY BS MAJORS: NSCI 1100 ACCEPTED FOR OUTSIDE FOUNDATION
If you are pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Psychology, please note there is an additional course you may take to work toward your Outside Psychology Foundation Clusters requirements. NSCI 1100: Human Neuroanatamy may be counted toward the Biological Science Foundation Cluster. This is a 4 credit course typically offered fall terms through the Neuroscience Department. If you have taken or choose to take this course, you must be in contact with Psychology Undergraduate Advising at psyadvis@umn.edu to request an exception be made on your APAS, as it will not automatically recognize this course as counting toward the BS requirement. Please contact us with any additional questions.

Check out the next Minnesota Professionals for Psychology Applied to Work (MPPAW) meeting TONIGHT, Tuesday, March 20th. Justin Bethke and Michael Durando from Target Corporation will be presenting on Employee Opinion Surveys. They will be sharing how an increased executive appetite for survey data has led the survey team to undertake a significant redesign of the survey program. The meeting will be held at Solera in downtown Minneapolis. What can a neighborhood teach us about leadership and social change? ID 3960: Global Leadership for Social Change- A Cedar Riverside Immersion is a 3 credit May session course that parallels the immersion experience of study abroad, and could be usable toward your Psychology major requirements! Students in this course will be learning and working in the Cedar Riverside community and examining questions of leadership, power, cultural diversity and social change. The course involves an exciting blend of community engagement, neighborhood excursions, readings, and lively discussions. In the community, we learn from organizers, social justice activists, businesses leaders, elected officials, and community residents. It includes an overnight residential component, a neighborhood theater performance and meals at local restaurants. Attend the info session to meet the instructor and get an overview of this unique and exciting course! 10.CAB COLLOQUIUM: A DECISION NEUROSCIENCE APPROACH TO AUCTIONS

Come learn about recent work from Samuel McClure, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor at Stanford University. Cognitive neuroscience offers the potential to constrain models of the processes that underlie decision-making. He will discuss some of his recent work using this approach to investigate a phenomenon in auctions known as the winner's curse. Auctions are competitive social environments in which people often bid more than theory prescribes - commonly resulting in net financial loss. He proposes that bidding is well characterized as reinforcement learning with biased reward representations based on social preferences. They developed a new learning algorithm to model trial-by-trial changes in behavior. Indicative of reinforcement learning, prediction errors estimated with this model correlated with activity in the striatum and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Additionally, they found that winning and losing auctions evoked activity in areas related to social and emotional processes, including the temporal-parietal junction and anterior insula. Connectivity analyses suggest that monetary and social value signals are integrated in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and striatum. Based on these results, it is argued for a novel, brain-based, mechanistic account for the integration of reinforcement history and social preferences in economic decision-making. Dr. McClure will also hold open office hours from 1:30 to 3:00 in S214 Elliott.

11.SOC PSY COLLOQUIUM: AFFECTIVE ADAPTATION & PLEASURES OF UNCERTAINTY

The colloquium in Social Psychology is a great way to learn about cutting edge studies in the field. For this installment, speaker Dr. Timothy D. Wilson will present on "Affective Adaptation and the Pleasures of Uncertainty." How do people adapt to emotional events? He will present a model of affective adaptation that argues that people attend to self-relevant, unexplained events, react emotionally to them, explain or make sense of the events, and thereby adapt to the events (i.e., they attend to them less and have weaker emotional reactions to them). One implication of this argument is that if people can be prevented from making sense of positive events, the pleasure that these events cause might be prolonged. He will present evidence for this "pleasure of uncertainty" effect and discuss its implications.

The University of Minnesota Duluth's Continuing Education program has launched a new certificate. Studies in Gambling Addiction: Counseling the Pathological Gambler is a 60-hour noncredit professional development certificate. This program is aimed to provide useful supplemental knowledge for individuals planning to or currently working in the area of mental health, substance abuse or addiction counseling, public health, or employee assistance programs to name a few. 7.FULL-TIME RESEARCH ASSISTANT IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE AT UC-DAVIS
The Translational Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab at the University of California Davis is seeking applicants for a full-time research assistant (RA) position starting in the spring or summer of 2012. The main focus of the lab is the investigation of neural mechanisms of cognition and their impairment in psychiatric illness using neuroimaging and other cognitive neuroscience methods. The RAs will be working in a dynamic and friendly environment on a variety of projects involving behavioral, fMRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and EEG methods, with healthy and psychiatrically ill subjects. The scope of responsibilities is broad and may include subject recruitment and clinical characterization, behavioral, fMRI and EEG experiment implementation, data processing and data analysis. Individuals with experience in computer programming, including MATLAB, are particularly encouraged to apply. This position would be ideal for individuals planning to apply for medical school or graduate studies in neuroscience or cognitive psychology. We are looking for a two-year commitment. 8.WORK FOR THE DIVISION OF INDIAN WORK! PART-TIME STREET OUTREACH
This is a part-time non-exempt position at the Division of Indian Work. The outreach worker will perform outreach and case management with homeless/street youth. Qualifications include: two-year degree in Human Services or equivalent experience; knowledge of the needs of American Indian parents and families; knowledge of the homeless youth community, specifically American Indian youth; effective communication skills, including writing ability; effective organizational skills; must be a team player and be able to work collaboratively; must be flexible in varied working situations; must be willing to two weekends a month and four mid-to-late nights a month; must have a valid MN driver's license and a car for work. Responsibilities include: perform outreach and emergency case management with homeless/street youth; data collection; maintain an up to date filing system; complete reports in a timely manner; attend staff and team meetings. Family is seeking a responsible, energetic person to mentor and provide support for a 13-year-old with Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD. Gain experience working with a teen with autism and ADHD. Learn more about the disorder and how to use positive behavior support systems. Responsibilities include: modeling appropriate social skills, group participation, adult behaviors and problem-solving skills; providing direct instruction and prompting for daily living activities and social skills; monitoring ability to follow directions and attend designated activities; redirecting inappropriate behavior and implementing positive behavior support plan; providing social skills and behavioral support for community outings; some meal preparation and transportation. Family will provide training in behavior management and information about autism and ADHD. Some time will be spent at the University of Minnesota campus, and some time will be in the family's home and community outings in the west metro suburbs. 13.ACCEPTING APPLICANTS: CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES PROGRAM
Clinical laboratory scientists (CLS), also known as medical laboratory scientists, play a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients. They are the third largest medical profession (after doctors & nurses). Clinical laboratory scientists perform complex testing using sophisticated instruments to detect diseases and monitor treatment. Approximately 75% of medical decisions, diagnosis, treatment and evaluations, are based on the interpretations of laboratory test results. In addition to the medical laboratory setting, graduates of this program are qualified to work in a variety of other laboratory facilities such as research, environmental, biomedical, or forensic laboratories. With the curriculum emphasis on developing quality understanding of laboratory methods and their diagnostic interpretation, our graduates are also excellent candidates for graduate research degree programs or medical professional schools. If this sounds exciting, then clinical laboratory science could be the college major and career for you. 1.ALL SPRING 2012 PSY 4993/5993 CONTRACTS MUST BE TURNED IN BY 3/12
Students participating in a PSY 4993/5993 experience during Spring 2012 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract prior to the 8th week deadline (March 12th, 2012). The majority of students have completed this required step during the drop/add period; however, if missed this deadline and still have a contract lingering, you must take action to be officially enrolled. Contracts will not be accepted after this date, and credit will not be received for your work in the lab for Spring 2012. This is a shift from past protocol and will be strictly enforced. 5.PRE-HEALTH? AHS 2300: ORIENTATION TO CLINICAL RESEARCH
This seminar introduces pre-health students to the field of clinical research, ethical conduct and professionalism, and clinical research methods pertinent to dentistry, medicine, public health, pharmacy, and nursing. In addition to biweekly lectures, students will participate in a supervised field experience in which they observe clinical research practices. This course prepares students to begin a University Research Opportunities Program (UROP) grant in clinical research. Enrollment in this course is limited and requires instructor permission, as well as attendance of an information session this March. 10.UG RESEARCH EXPERIENCE WITH PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AT VA MED CENTER
Interested in working with research subjects with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or traumatic brain injury? Dr. Scott Sponheim's research laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center is offering an immediately available research opportunity for U of M Psychology majors in severe mental disorders and traumatic brain injury. Fourteen undergraduates have done their theses with Dr. Sponheim at the Minneapolis VA and 9 students have completed doctoral dissertations in the lab. Many undergraduates have also completed program research requirements through working on his studies. Current studies include VA-funded research into neurobiological markers (EEG, ERP, MRI, MEG) of genetic vulnerability for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, a multi-site genome wide association study (GWAS) to identify what aspects of genetic variation are associated with cognitive and functional impairments in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and a Department of Defense funded study into the essential neural features of blast-induced traumatic brain injury and PTSD in soldiers from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, preferably be juniors or seniors, and have completed courses in psychopathology (i.e., abnormal psychology) and statistics. Minimum commitment is 6-months for 5 hours/week. Responsibilities will depend on the applicant and current needs of the lab, but will likely begin with data entry and may expand into EEG collection and analysis, cognitive testing, interviewing, or participant screening and recruitment. Many previous students have used the experience in the lab to create a major project and support entry into graduate or medical school. 11.SOCIAL SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENTSUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AT PURDUE
Each year Purdue University offers competitive summer internships for aspiring students through the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. This year, there is a paid research position open to students from any institution who has interest in using social science skills to improve the environment. Weather and climate plays an important role in the success or failure of agricultural production systems in the Midwest, and predicted climate change will create new challenges for farm management. Climate scientists are continually developing new models and datasets to help solve agricultural problems, and they are enlisting the help of social scientists to transform this information into actionable knowledge for effective decision making. In this project, the SURF student will help the Useful to Usable (U2U) social science team organize focus group sessions with farmers and farm advisors. This includes analyzing large survey datasets to identify knowledge gaps and potential focus group discussion topics. The student will also compile summarized survey results to be presented during focus groups and in other project-related outreach materials/publications. The SURF student will learn about focus groups and how they serve as an effective way to engage stakeholder groups and inform climate scientists. They will become familiar with popular survey analysis software, learn how to organize focus group sessions, and learn about climate change concerns for agriculture. 12.VOLUNTEER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY-START SPRING, CONTINUE SUM/FALL
Professor Colin DeYoung's research team is seeking a volunteer undergraduate research assistant (UGRA) to begin this spring, with the option of continuing into the summer and next fall. The UGRA will be involved with research projects in the area of Personality Psychology. Duties and activities may include but are not limited to: recruiting participants, running participants in research studies, data management and analysis, active participation in lab meetings (if desired). UGRAs are expected to commit to an average of 9 hours of work per week, attend research team meetings, work independently on assigned tasks, and take initiative in communicating with research team members. While research assistants will be working this spring on a volunteer-only basis, they are free to register for 3 credits of PSY 5993 Directed Research in the summer and fall semesters. Eligible candidates are motivated undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, with at least a 3.0 GPA, and some experience taking psychology, child psychology, or neuroscience classes. Youth Organizations Umbrella (Y.O.U.) is pleased to announce its Inspire Fellows Program for the summer of 2012. The fellowship offers graduate and upper-undergraduate students a full-time opportunity to learn best-practices in youth development and to prepare for a career in youth development, education, or the non-profit sector. Inspire Fellows serve as workshop leaders and counselors for Y.O.U.'s 9-week summer program, which runs full-time June 11 - August 17. The first week offers Fellows a comprehensive orientation and training on Y.O.U., non-profit management, and positive youth development. The next nine weeks consist of high-impact summer programming. We are looking for two research interns to assist with an interdisciplinary volunteer project during Summer 2012. This is a great opportunity to interact with oak woodland owners and help prevent the establishment of several potentially devastating invasive insect pests, including a close relative of the emerald ash borer. This is an interdisciplinary research grant combining entomology, economics and psychology - rarely will you see this combination of interests! Duties include: Assist in obtaining, interpreting, and synthesizing data from woodland owners; Interact with woodland owners by providing them with feedback on their activities; Attend research team meetings and do background readings; Conduct an independent project related to the goals of the project, write a report and give an oral presentation of your results. Examples of possible independent projects: Estimate the time cost of managing a volunteer network for a government agency; Estimate the time cost of volunteering to the volunteers; Explore how community networks affect volunteerism rates; Extract additional data from our experimental interventions to relate to volunteerism; Estimate the quality of volunteer effort from the collected samples; Assess volunteer satisfaction with the volunteer activities and program; Document arthropods associated with oak and improve volunteer training manual; Other ideas can be developed in collaboration with the project group. Millions of people are affected by mental health issues ranging from stress to depression, eating disorders, and suicide. To promote awareness about the sometimes profound impact that suffering from, living with, and recovering from mental health issues have on college students, a coalition of student groups on campus are planning a Mental Health Awareness Day on campus. As part of this awareness event, we're asking U of M students, their friends, and families to help make this day as powerful as possible by donating personal stories that we can incorporate into our display. 5.PAID SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY
An opportunity is available for undergraduates through National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). A study involving the Departments of Applied Economics, Entomology, and Psychology at the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is working with private oak woodlands owners in Minnesota as potential volunteers to detect the first appearance of several high priority invasive insect pests. Possible REU projects include estimating the time cost of managing a volunteer network for a government agency or the time cost of the volunteers, exploring how community networks affect volunteerism rates, extracting additional data from our experimental interventions to relate to volunteerism, or estimating the quality of volunteer effort from the collected samples. The University of Minnesota is launching a new Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH)! The high prevalence of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders virtually guarantees that counselors, no matter the treatment setting, will encounter clients struggling with not one but two or more disorders. IBH prepares counselors for this clinical reality. The IBH merges mental health and substance abuse education and training into a single, comprehensive and cohesive program. This synthesis represents an important and pioneering shift in the preparation of clinicians. The IBH is designed to fulfill education and training requirements for two licenses: the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC). The MS in Health Services Research, Policy & Administration (MS-HSRPA) program in the Health Policy & Management in the School of Public Health invite you to attend an information session about this unique program which can be a great fit for Psychology undergrads. This MS prepares you for careers translating health-related data into organizational intelligence that improves individual health, population health, and organizational performance. Health care organizations such as Allina use information to help clinicians improve care by providing tools to measure patient outcomes and alert providers to patient needs. Organizations such as Target are using information to improve health and wellness programs for their employees. Translating huge amounts of raw data into organizational intelligence requires analysts who are skilled in analyzing data to address organizational questions such as what works for whom, when, where, and why? This career opportunity is a growing area and it will be difficult to outsource because it requires being a liaison between users and informatics - helping users frame and answer their questions using their organization's data. The MS-HSRPA program will provide you analytical skills that can be applied in numerous settings--program evaluation, systems and industrial engineering, analytic health care management, health policy analysis, and more! And, the MS-HSRPA program works with local employers to develop internships that provide 2nd year students with a stipend, and the opportunity to develop your skills in real-world settings. This information session will cover the program, the curriculum, the faculty, the sponsors, and internship opportunities. Judge Baker Children's Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA is currently seeking full-time research assistants for an effectiveness trial of CBT for depression and anxiety (including post-traumatic stress), and behavioral parent training for conduct problems. The position will be under the direction of John R. Weisz, PhD, ABPP and colleagues. Responsibilities may include: subject recruitment, diagnostic interviewing, survey administration, data entry and filing, literature searches, formatting manuscripts/grants, coding for meta-analyses, and other supporting activities. Opportunities for presenting research at conferences exist. Applicants must be willing to commit to the position for two years beginning June 2012 (start date negotiable). 3.USF SUMMER RESEARCH INSTITUTE: MENTAL HEALTH & RELATED DISORDERS
The University of South Florida (USF) will conduct a Summer Research Institute for Undergraduates who are interested in conducting research related to mental illness and related disorders. The program is called the SRI@FMHI and will be conducted at the Florida Mental Health Institute at USF. The 10-week program will provide students with the opportunity to work with a faculty member on a research project in an area of the student's interest as well as to obtain practical skills and training on research ethics. The program will be funded by the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH), thus allowing us to provide a $4000 stipend to participating students. 4.INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERISM? HERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY IT!
An opportunity is available for undergraduates through National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). A study involving the Departments of Applied Economics, Entomology, and Psychology at the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is working with private oak woodlands owners in Minnesota as potential volunteers to detect the first appearance of several high priority invasive insect pests. Possible REU projects include estimating the time cost of managing a volunteer network for a government agency or the time cost of the volunteers, exploring how community networks affect volunteerism rates, extracting additional data from our experimental interventions to relate to volunteerism, or estimating the quality of volunteer effort from the collected samples. Full descriptions of these possibilities are provided on the Department of Entomology's website (under "Summer Opportunities" on right side). To be eligible for REU, you must be a US citizen and enrolled as an undergraduate at a US College or University. Application materials include: resume; course transcript (unofficial transcript is ok); list of three academic or work references (with telephone numbers and email addresses); short essay (800 words maximum) explaining interest in this REU, abilities to contribute to the project, and pertinent research experience. 5.SUMMER UNDERGRAD RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY: CANCER HEALTH DISPARITIES
The University of Minnesota Medical School's Program in Health Disparities Research and the Masonic Cancer Center are pleased to announce the 2012 Summer Undergraduate Cancer Disparities Research Internship. Successful students will complete a full-time, six-week internship program that will include hands-on experience in research addressing cancer-related disparities and interdisciplinary seminars and workshops. Interns will also be paired with and supervised by experienced faculty mentors conducting research at the Masonic Cancer Center and the Program in Health Disparities Research. The range of research includes basic biomedical, translational, clinical, and community-based research. Eligible applicants will be incoming sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students from Minnesota's minorities or under-represented communities enrolled in 2- or 4-year colleges in Minnesota. Internships will be full-time (Monday through Friday) for 6 weeks during summer of 2012. Interns will receive a stipend of ~$400/week up for the summer and will be expected to provide their own laptop computer and arrange their own transportation and lodging. Successful candidates must conduct themselves in a professional manner, work well in both independent and group settings, and be available for the entire six weeks of the program. The Peer Research Consultants provide one-on-one assistance to students with the goal of helping them develop research strategies needed for an excellent research paper. They can give students an overview of using the libraries for research, formulating a paper topic and search, helping students to find scholarly articles, books, and more. PRCs are upper-level undergraduates who have gone through 10+ hours of training on using the libraries and helping students to do the same. They hold drop-in hours in Wilson, Walter, and MCAE in Appleby Hall, or students can make an appointment. In addition, there are new weekend hours at Wilson Library this semester! 5.EXCITING RA OPPORTUNITY FOR CREDIT--BUILDING PEACE PROJECT
The Building Peace project is looking for undergraduate research assistants to work with a professor in Communication Studies trained in Social Psychology. For this project, RAs will work searching academic and policy literature, writing drafts, and searching for websites and organizations working for peace in places of ethnic and religious conflict. The lab is looking for motivated and reliable students who can commit to 6-9 hours per week (for which you can register for COMM 3970). Previous research experience preferred, but not required. Kenwood Therapy Center is a highly-regarded, innovative, creative, multidisciplinary clinic and training center in Minneapolis, MN (www.kenwoodcenter.org). Kenwood Therapy Center is seeking responsible, 2nd- or 3rd-year students contemplating graduate school for Psychology, Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, or other mental health fields for an immediately available volunteer position. Candidates should be mature, reliable self-starter, collaborative team player and have strong computer, writing, and interpersonal skills as well as a real desire to help people. Values should be aligned with the mission of the Kenwood Therapy Center. Duties for this unique position include: Confidential phone intakes, insurance benefit checks, office work, registering and assisting staff in workshops, et cetera. Student volunteers will be given on-the-job training, workshop opportunities, and supervision. Hours will be negotiable and can be worked to accommodate the student's own schedule. However, once hours are agreed upon, volunteers are expected to dependably adhere to consistent hours. We would like a one-year commitment of 5 to 10 hours/week after a mutual probation period to see if it is a good fit. The first position will deliver supportive services for four individuals with developmental disabilities, Monday - Friday from 6:00 - 9:00 am. This individual generally works without direct immediate supervision in the morning to help the individuals with their morning routines. The second position is the same as previous, except hours typically run in the evening, Monday-Friday from 4:00 - 9:00 pm. The third position is for weekend staff, making a weekend fun and enjoyable by taking individuals to community events, teaching daily living skills, and modeling healthy relationships. This position works one weekend (approximately 36 hours) then has three weekends off. 8.FULL-TIME JOB OPPORTUNITY IN DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY AT THE U OF M
The Research Coordinator position, housed in the Department of Psychiatry at UMN-TC, includes working on several research projects led by Dr. Sanjiv Kumra. The research lab primarily studies adolescents with schizophrenia using brain imaging, neuro-cognitive testing, and medication trials. Eligible applicants should have: a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or a related field to include research experience, experience or coursework in data analysis (using SPSS or similar software), and be comfortable interacting with a diverse range of populations including children, adolescents, young adults, and individuals with clinical disorders. 9.2012-2013 A. I. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS INTERNSHIP
This scholarship was created to honor Alfred I. Johnson who was a Regent of the University and Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. The selected students commit to completing an off-campus public service internship. This scholarship provides students who possess a demonstrated interest in public affairs a stipend for their internships. Applicants must show evidence of a strong interest in public affairs, with an intention to pursue a career or vocational activities in public affairs, including any kind of community volunteer activity, organizing to affect public policy, service on government advisory committees, and service in elective offices. Applications are due on Friday, March 9. Applicants are not expected to have confirmed their internship plans for the 2012-2013 school year at the time of application. Recipients will be notified of the Scholarship Committee's decision in April and will then have ample time to further explore and secure a suitable internship for the upcoming school year. The University of South Florida is offering a new program designed to prepare post-baccalaureate students for admission to Ph.D. programs in behavioral and social sciences. The program is called BRIDGE: Behavioral Research Immersion to Develop Graduate Excellence. BRIDGE will lead to a graduate certificate awarded by the University of South Florida. Students will strengthen their behavioral science research skills, participate as active members of faculty-mentored research teams, develop skills needed to apply to graduate school and to pursue research careers, and obtain community-based experience in an area related to their research interests.
