1.DID YOU TAKE A PSY 3801 EQUIVALENT AT ANOTHER INSTITUTION &
DO YOU PLAN ON TAKING PSY 3001W SUMMER OR FALL TERM? IF SO, READ ON
Are you a declared Psychology major who has successfully completed an approved statistics equivalent to PSY 3801 at another institution? Do you intend to enroll in PSY 3001W fall semester? If you meet these criteria, please read on. Our registration system only recognizes several approved equivalents as meeting the stats prerequisite for PSY 3001W, and you may be blocked from enrolling in open seats. To increase your chances of securing an open seat for this course, you will need to follow these instructions: 1) Email psyadvis@umn.edu at least three days prior to your registration start time. In the email, provide your student ID number, your registration time, and state that you would like to enroll in PSY 3001W and have taken a PSY 3801 equivalent at another institution. 2) We will respond to your email verifying that you have successfully completed an approved equivalent. 3) You will keep this verification email and respond directly to it a half hour before you plan on registering. In this response, you must include your student ID number and your top two choices of open 3001W sections (NOTE: there MUST be an open seat in the section for us to provide a permission number). 4) If a seat is available, we will respond as soon as possible with a permission number that you must use promptly.

2.PSY 4993/5993 RESEARCH ASSISTANT REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS
Are you planning to participate in PSY 4993/5993 this summer or fall? If so, please note that the registration process for this experience differs greatly from that of standard PSY courses. Please read and follow the registration guidelines outlined on our website to secure an experience and become enrolled.

3.WALK-IN HOURS FOR PSYCHOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING
Psychology Undergraduate Advising holds designated walk-in hours for 5 - 10 minute questions. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified walk-in times and the scope of what can be covered in them. Questions that may be addressed during walk-ins include: research contract signatures, policy verification, and resource referrals (note: some topics in these categories may be unique and require an appointment). If your question takes more than 10 minutes or requires a certain level of preparation (such as determining what you have left in your major), you will be asked to schedule an appointment with an advisor for a later date. 4.MAY SESSION 2012--EPSY 5401: COUNSELING PROCEDURES
This 3-credit course is designed as an introduction to the theory and practice of counseling. It is intended for non-majors who may use counseling skills in a professional capacity or for those who may be considering a career in counseling. In this course you will become acquainted with counseling theory, learn basic counseling skills, gain understanding of multicultural counseling, and learn strategies for working with crisis victims. Instructional methods will include lecture, group interaction, and practice. The course is for graduate students and upper-level undergrad. This course is not applicable to the Psychology major requirements, but may be used toward general coursework and help in personal and career development. 5.PHIL 4326: LIVES WORTH LIVING-QUESTIONS OF SELF, VOCATION & COMMUNITY
Attend 'Philosophy Camp' this May Term! Participants gain a fresh perspective on questions of self, vocation, and community while enjoying simple living on the prairie of southwestern Minnesota. Students and instructors form a community for living and learning to investigate their own and others responses to questions such as these: What is an authentic self? Who am I? What is vocation? What is my work in the world? What kind of community do I want to have around me? What do I bring to my relationships and community? What makes communities resilient, able to flourish through change and conflict? Students and instructors also meet local residents to learn how they are living the answers to life's important questions and creating lives worth living. 6.WORTHWHILE 1-CREDIT COURSES THIS FALL THROUGH CEHD
The College of Education and Human Development is excited to announce the development of a series of 1-credit, 1xxx-level courses for Fall 2012. All of these courses are designed to help prepare students for academic, professional, and/or personal success. They include courses such as 'Writing a Research Proposal from "A" to "IRB,"' 'APA 101: Guidelines and Academic Integrity,' and 'Networking Strategies.' 7.GWSS 3415: FEMINIST PERSPECTIVES ON SEXUAL ASSAULT/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies Department will be offering a Fall 2012 course titled Feminist Perspectives on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. This course focuses on the history of and contemporary thinking about activism, social change, public policies, and legal remedies directed toward sexual assault and domestic violence in the US, particularly from feminist perspectives. It will examine these topics through asking unique questions, relevant readings, films, site visits, and guest speakers including the executive director of the non-profit courtroom monitoring organization, WATCH, and the head of the Minneapolis Police Department Sex Crimes Unit. If you are a Psych B.A., this may work towards fulfilling part of the Upper-Division Outside the Major degree requirement. Register for GWSS 3415 for 3 credits. 8.MEETING WEDNESDAY 4/18: PIZZA POP AND GRAD SCHOOL TALK!
The next Psi Chi/Psychology Club meeting will be on Wednesday, April 18th, from 3:00 - 4:00pm in N639 Elliott. It's our last meeting of the semester so it's time for our Pizza, Pop, and Grad School Talk! So far we have graduate students from developmental psychology and social/evolutionary psychology-- possibly more to come! These students will be sharing their experiences with graduate school from applying to programs to being a student. Come with questions and we're sure they'll be happy to answer them for you! Free pizza and pop will be served, and you do not have to be a member of Psi Chi to attend-- all are welcome! 11.INTERNAT'L UNDERGRAD RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP!
There is a new scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students! The International Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Scholarship is designed to promote learning abroad opportunities to undergraduate students by providing critical funding to students enrolled in select credit-bearing learning abroad programs involving a research project. The learning abroad program must be a semester or academic year in length involving a minimum of 100 hours dedicated to research that occurs onsite. For more information, visit the Learning Abroad Center's UROP site. The deadline for Fall 2012 or 2012-13 academic year is May 1, 2012. The award amount is $1,500.

12.ON-CAMPUS INTERNSHIP--GAIN EXPOSURE TO COUNSELING PSYCH WORK
The Career Counseling and Assessment Clinic (CCAC) is seeking an undergraduate intern for the 2012-2013 school year. CCAC is a non-profit career counseling clinic that has served the community for over 30 years. The intern is involved in administrative tasks that help the clinic run smoothly. The intern has the option to attend our biweekly case consultation meetings where counselors discuss their clients' goals and strategize how to best meet those needs. Finally, it may be possible for interns to take the career assessments offered by the clinic to gain their own self-knowledge. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone considering a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology or related fields. The Student Parent HELP Center (SPHC), a university program serving low income undergrads who are pregnant or already parenting children through their bachelor degrees, has an amazing employment opportunity for a qualified undergraduate student. This position is a great opportunity for students planning a career working with families or other helping professions to get direct, career related experience as an undergraduate. Position will be supervised by Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Social Worker and will interact with two Graduate Social Workers. 14.PEER ASSISTED LEARNING FACILITATOR FOR THE SMART LEARNING COMMONS
The SMART Learning Commons is looking to hire undergraduate students to lead weekly study sessions for students enrolled in the following classes: STAT1001 and PSY1001 for Fall 2012. Candidates should be in good academic standing (must have a combined GPA of 3.2 or above and at least an A- in the course or equivalent) and have a genuine interest in helping others. CLA Ambassadors are a group of committed student leaders who are selected to serve as representatives of the College of Liberal Arts. Don't miss this excellent opportunity to learn about job and career possibilities you may pursue following completion of your Psychology degree. Psychology Undergraduate Advising will host a panel of psychology alumni in medical, finance, human resource, mental health, and research positions who will discuss their career paths and current positions. They'll also share important tips for making a smooth transition from school to the world of work and point out what they did as undergraduates that was helpful (or not!). This event can be useful for those early on in their undergraduate career as well as for those nearing graduation. Attend to learn more about the process and possibilities! 2.CALLING FOR STORIES RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH!
Has your life, or the life of someone close to you been affected by mental health issues? Millions of people are affected by mental health issues ranging from stress to depression, eating disorders, and suicide. To promote awareness about the sometimes profound impact that suffering from, living with, and recovering from mental health issues have on college students, a coalition of student groups on campus are planning a Mental Health Awareness Day on campus. As part of this awareness event, we're asking U of M students, their friends, and families to help make this day as powerful as possible by donating personal stories that we can incorporate into our display. These stories may describe your own experience with mental health, illness, or suicide, or how a loved one's experience affected you, positively and negatively. This conference is a great opportunity to either share your work with your peers or simply learn from others and make connections! It will also feature Keyhnote Speaker, Yale University's Laurie Santos, Ph.D., whose research focuses on the intersection of evolutionary biology, developmental psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. Registration for event attendance and/or submission of a paper or poster for presentation at MUPC 2012 are due by April 6, 2012. The purpose of MLEAP is to provide current University of Minnesota students who have not taken the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) an opportunity to apply to the Law School. Students considering MLEAP should have researched law programs and determined that the University of Minnesota Law School is the best choice for their legal education. This binding decision program requires that admitted students do not take the LSAT prior to matriculation or initiate any new law school admissions applications. Light refreshments will be provided. 11.PANEL DISCUSSION: FEMINIST PERSPECTIVES ON PSYCH OF SAME SEX MARRIAGE

The Minnesota Psychological Association - in conjunction with Minnesota Women in Psychology and the U of M GLBTA Programs Office, Program in Human Sexuality, and the Women's Center - will be hosting a panel discussion on "Feminist Perspectives on the Psychology of Same Sex Marriages" featuring three nationally renowned psychologists, researchers, authors, and teachers. Lisa Diamond, Beverly Green, and Glenda Russell will discuss their research and clinical perspectives on marriage equality and the marriage amendment. Their specialties are in GLBT concerns and they will speak about women's issues, sexual orientation, ethnic and cultural diversity, and feminism and marriage. Greene will focus on marriage equality as a wedge issue used to divide African Americans and LGBT people. Diamond will discuss areas of caution in the fight for marriage equality, specifically regarding the movement to position same sex couples as indistinguishable from heterosexual couples. Russell will discuss feminist views of marriage from the second wave in the 1970s to the present time. This event is free and open to the public. Gender neutral restrooms will be available. This event is being held during Gender Justice Week .

12.VOLUNTEER WITH AT-RISK YOUTH THIS SUMMER! ST. JOE'S YOUTH GARDEN
We are currently recruiting motivated and compassionate volunteers who are interested in gardening alongside homeless and at-risk youth at St. Joseph's Home for Children in South Minneapolis. As mental health professionals who work with these youth, we have created St. Joe's Youth Garden Project to address poor nutrition, lack of knowledge about diet as it relates to health, and the high rates of obesity among this population. Students will find it not only to be a valuable learning experience, but also a rewarding investment into the lives of these youth. The time commitment would be approximately one to two hours a week, and would involve working in the garden and cooking with the youth. Volunteers with gardening and/or cooking experience will be preferred, but the most important qualification is a desire to invest in the lives of the youth at St. Joes. The time frame would be May through September, with flexibility for vacations, etc. This position offers flexibility to the volunteers involved, and will also offer support from experienced gardeners and the St. Joseph's nursing staff. The program offers internships in five main areas: Citizen Outreach/Constituent Services and Appointments; Communications; Legislative and Cabinet Affairs; Office of the Lieutenant Governor; and General Counsel's Office. Internships are split into three trimesters: Fall (September through December), Spring/Legislative Session (January through May) and Summer (June through August). 1.ALL SPRING 2012 PSY 4993/5993 CONTRACTS MUST BE TURNED IN BY 3/12
Students participating in a PSY 4993/5993 experience during Spring 2012 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract prior to the 8th week deadline (March 12th, 2012). The majority of students have completed this required step during the drop/add period; however, if missed this deadline and still have a contract lingering, you must take action to be officially enrolled. Contracts will not be accepted after this date, and credit will not be received for your work in the lab for Spring 2012. This is a shift from past protocol and will be strictly enforced. 5.PRE-HEALTH? AHS 2300: ORIENTATION TO CLINICAL RESEARCH
This seminar introduces pre-health students to the field of clinical research, ethical conduct and professionalism, and clinical research methods pertinent to dentistry, medicine, public health, pharmacy, and nursing. In addition to biweekly lectures, students will participate in a supervised field experience in which they observe clinical research practices. This course prepares students to begin a University Research Opportunities Program (UROP) grant in clinical research. Enrollment in this course is limited and requires instructor permission, as well as attendance of an information session this March. We will be having a panel of professors from a few different areas of psychology who will discuss the work they have done as well as answer questions. This panel includes Pat Frazier (Counseling), Nathan Kuncel (Industrial/Organizational), Matt Burns (School Psychology), and Scott Woitaszewski (School Psychology at the University of Wisconsin--River Falls). This is a great opportunity to learn about some of different areas in psychology. You do not have to be a member of Psi Chi to attend-- all are welcome!

10.UG RESEARCH EXPERIENCE WITH PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AT VA MED CENTER
Interested in working with research subjects with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or traumatic brain injury? Dr. Scott Sponheim's research laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center is offering an immediately available research opportunity for U of M Psychology majors in severe mental disorders and traumatic brain injury. Fourteen undergraduates have done their theses with Dr. Sponheim at the Minneapolis VA and 9 students have completed doctoral dissertations in the lab. Many undergraduates have also completed program research requirements through working on his studies. Current studies include VA-funded research into neurobiological markers (EEG, ERP, MRI, MEG) of genetic vulnerability for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, a multi-site genome wide association study (GWAS) to identify what aspects of genetic variation are associated with cognitive and functional impairments in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and a Department of Defense funded study into the essential neural features of blast-induced traumatic brain injury and PTSD in soldiers from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, preferably be juniors or seniors, and have completed courses in psychopathology (i.e., abnormal psychology) and statistics. Minimum commitment is 6-months for 5 hours/week. Responsibilities will depend on the applicant and current needs of the lab, but will likely begin with data entry and may expand into EEG collection and analysis, cognitive testing, interviewing, or participant screening and recruitment. Many previous students have used the experience in the lab to create a major project and support entry into graduate or medical school. 11.SOCIAL SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENTSUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AT PURDUE
Each year Purdue University offers competitive summer internships for aspiring students through the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. This year, there is a paid research position open to students from any institution who has interest in using social science skills to improve the environment. Weather and climate plays an important role in the success or failure of agricultural production systems in the Midwest, and predicted climate change will create new challenges for farm management. Climate scientists are continually developing new models and datasets to help solve agricultural problems, and they are enlisting the help of social scientists to transform this information into actionable knowledge for effective decision making. In this project, the SURF student will help the Useful to Usable (U2U) social science team organize focus group sessions with farmers and farm advisors. This includes analyzing large survey datasets to identify knowledge gaps and potential focus group discussion topics. The student will also compile summarized survey results to be presented during focus groups and in other project-related outreach materials/publications. The SURF student will learn about focus groups and how they serve as an effective way to engage stakeholder groups and inform climate scientists. They will become familiar with popular survey analysis software, learn how to organize focus group sessions, and learn about climate change concerns for agriculture. 12.VOLUNTEER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY-START SPRING, CONTINUE SUM/FALL
Professor Colin DeYoung's research team is seeking a volunteer undergraduate research assistant (UGRA) to begin this spring, with the option of continuing into the summer and next fall. The UGRA will be involved with research projects in the area of Personality Psychology. Duties and activities may include but are not limited to: recruiting participants, running participants in research studies, data management and analysis, active participation in lab meetings (if desired). UGRAs are expected to commit to an average of 9 hours of work per week, attend research team meetings, work independently on assigned tasks, and take initiative in communicating with research team members. While research assistants will be working this spring on a volunteer-only basis, they are free to register for 3 credits of PSY 5993 Directed Research in the summer and fall semesters. Eligible candidates are motivated undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, with at least a 3.0 GPA, and some experience taking psychology, child psychology, or neuroscience classes. The Kenexa High Performance Institute is looking for an intern who will support the group's ongoing operations and projects in 2012. 14.INSPIRE FELLOWS PROGRAM SUMMER '12--YOUTH DEVELOPMENT & EDUCATION
Youth Organizations Umbrella (Y.O.U.) is pleased to announce its Inspire Fellows Program for the summer of 2012. The fellowship offers graduate and upper-undergraduate students a full-time opportunity to learn best-practices in youth development and to prepare for a career in youth development, education, or the non-profit sector. Inspire Fellows serve as workshop leaders and counselors for Y.O.U.'s 9-week summer program, which runs full-time June 11 - August 17. The first week offers Fellows a comprehensive orientation and training on Y.O.U., non-profit management, and positive youth development. The next nine weeks consist of high-impact summer programming. Fellows are chosen to develop and facilitate specific workshops in one of three areas: arts and literature, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), or recreational activities. 16.INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERISM? RESEARCH INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE
We are looking for two research interns to assist with an interdisciplinary volunteer project during Summer 2012. This is a great opportunity to interact with oak woodland owners and help prevent the establishment of several potentially devastating invasive insect pests, including a close relative of the emerald ash borer. This is an interdisciplinary research grant combining entomology, economics and psychology - rarely will you see this combination of interests! Duties include: Assist in obtaining, interpreting, and synthesizing data from woodland owners; Interact with woodland owners by providing them with feedback on their activities; Attend research team meetings and do background readings; Conduct an independent project related to the goals of the project, write a report and give an oral presentation of your results. Examples of possible independent projects: Estimate the time cost of managing a volunteer network for a government agency; Estimate the time cost of volunteering to the volunteers; Explore how community networks affect volunteerism rates; Extract additional data from our experimental interventions to relate to volunteerism; Estimate the quality of volunteer effort from the collected samples; Assess volunteer satisfaction with the volunteer activities and program; Document arthropods associated with oak and improve volunteer training manual; Other ideas can be developed in collaboration with the project group. Eligibility: Must be an upper level undergraduate at a US College or University; Must have a drivers license and a car; Must be able to work in Hubbard, Cass, Crow Wing, and Morrison counties in Minnesota. CLA undergraduates are invited to apply for scholarships to support study abroad during the summer or fall terms of 2012. Awards will be made in the amount of $2000. Eligible students must be CLA undergraduates (any major) and be full-time in an approved study abroad program during the term of the scholarship. Preference will be given to students connecting the experience to their major or including language study in their program.
