1. All Summer 2012 PSY 4993 Research Contracts Must Be Turned in by 7/6
Students participating in a PSY 4993 research experience for credit during Summer 2012 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract prior to the 4th week deadline (July 6th, 2012). The majority of students have completed this required step during the drop/add period; however, if you missed this deadline and still have a contract lingering, you must take action to be officially enrolled. Contracts will not be accepted after this date, and credit will not be received for your work in the lab for Summer 2012. For more information on the Undergraduate Research Contract and earning credit for assisting in a research lab, please visit our website.

2. Call for Research Manuscripts: Undergraduate Journal of Psychology at Berkeley
The Undergraduate Journal of Psychology at Berkeley (UJPB) is an annual publication that provides a critical forum for publication to a diverse and multidisciplinary undergraduate community. It features original research and review articles and provides a venue for original works that focus on psychology, neuroscience, and other cognitive sciences. The journal also has a focus on education and training scholarship, thereby promoting excellence in and encouraging further undergraduate research in psychology. If you have completed a "Stepping Stone Article", "Research Article" and/or "Review Article" in a psychology-related field, you are invited to submit your paper for review in the Undergraduate Journal of Psychology at Berkeley! Before you submit an article, please check our website for guidelines and expectations for different kinds of manuscripts. The UJPB accepts and reviews submissions from psychology, cognitive neuroscience, linguistics, education, and all other psychology-related fields, as long as the papers are the original work of undergraduate students; this includes senior honors theses, course term papers, independent research projects, theoretical papers, and all other excellent undergraduate writing. Multiple submissions from one author are welcome. While the deadline to submit papers is August 1st, 2012, articles submitted after this date may still be considered for later editions. Papers received earlier will have higher priority however. If you have any questions or are having difficulty submitting your paper, do not hesitate to email berkpsychjournal@gmail.com.

3. Interested in Education? CI 3151W - Culture, Power, & Education
Culture, Power, and Education (CI 3151, 12:00 P.M. - 12:50 P.M. , M,W (09/04/2012 - 12/12/2012) provides students with an intensive investigation of the ways in which culture plays a critical role in education and student achievement. The course is meant for those considering any form of education as a vocation to reflect upon how their own culture and their students cultures impact student learning, with an eye toward developing a more just classroom and educational environment. It is a liberal education course, which fulfills the liberal education requirements for the Diversity and Social Justice theme. In this course, students will investigate how culturally relevant pedagogy can and must be implemented as a critical part of any teacher's pedagogy. The course will examine the research that explicates why it is vital to incorporate students' interests and lived experiences into the classrooms. The class will discuss ways to begin to foster sociopolitical consciousness in ourselves and our students so that they are positioned to become agents of change in our society. Students will be required to spend time in educational settings looking critically at how they are and are not culturally relevant. Finally, students will work in teams to develop models of culturally relevant instruction with a focus on social justice. If you have any questions please contact Brian Lozenski at lozen002@umn.edu. 5. Fall 2012 Courses Open in Center for Spirituality & Healing
CSPH 1001 Principles of Holistic Health and Healing focuses on work-life balance, healthy eating, and stress management as strategies for healthy living, and introduces students to modalities that may help them with all three. CSPH 1101: Self, Society and Environment gives students a basic introduction to the interconnectedness of social and ecological systems and their role in maintaining health at local and global levels. 6. UGRAs Needed for Study on Attention in Preschoolers with Cerebral Malaria & HIV in Uganda
Video coders are needed for a cross-cultural research project of attention span in preschool age children. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlative and construct validity of the Early Childhood Vigilance Test (ECVT) in a group of young Ugandan children from three NIH sponsored studies presently underway (Minnesota, Michigan State, and UCSF) and to study the effects of both HIV and cerebral malaria on attention. These three studies are: 1) Pathogenesis of cognitive/neurologic deficits in central nervous system malaria (Uganda); 2) Cognitive and psychosocial benefits of caregiver training in Ugandan HIV children; and 3) Determinants of neurodevelopmental delay in Ugandan HIV children. A total of 770 preschool children are being administered the ECVT. We are evaluating the ECVT blindly not knowing the clinical status of these children. Videos of the ECVT will be coded using "Procoder" in the CNBD (Center for Neurobehavioral Development, 717 Delaware St SE). Dr. Rea Romero will be teaching the ECVT video scoring to student coders using the program Procoder. She will determine reliability, and provide ongoing monitoring. Memory and IQ data are being correlated with these results; the lab can provide independent (non-psychology) study credits if desired. 7. UGRA Needed for Personality Lab - Start Summer & Continue Fall/Spring
Professor Colin DeYoung's research lab is seeking an Undergraduate Research Assistant (UGRA) beginning this summer and continuing into the Fall and Spring Semesters. The UGRA will be involved with research projects in the area of Personality Psychology. Duties and activities may include but are not limited to: recruiting participants, running participants in research studies, data management and analysis, and active participation in lab meetings. UGRAs are expected to commit to an average of 9 hours of work per week, attend lab meetings, work independently on assigned tasks, and take initiative in communicating with members of the research lab. UGRAs will be required to register for 3 credits of PSY 5993 Directed Research in the Fall and Spring Semesters. Additionally, UGRAs will be required to write an APA-style research paper due at the end of each semester (or other writing project, as appropriate). Eligible candidates are motivated psychology students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, have at least a 3.25 GPA, and must have taken or be concurrently enrolled in the following courses as prerequisites: PSY 1001 and PSY 3001W (preferably also PSY 3101, but this is negotiable). Psychology Undergraduate Advising will begin its summer availability this Monday, May 14th. We do not hold walk-in hours during summer session, as advisor availability fluctuates. However, we are available to meet with students through appointments. If you would like to meet with an advisor, please submit an Appointment Request Form. Our office remains open during our usual operating hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. 5.PSY 3960 (2 CR)--MAY TERM PSYCH COURSE ON THE BILINGUAL EXPERIENCE!
This May Term, the Department of Psychology will be offering a 2 credit PSY 3960 Undergraduate Seminar Course. The topic of this offering is 'The Bilingual Experience.' In this course, students will characterize "bilinguals" from a variety of theoretical perspectives, such as second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, with greater emphasis placed on cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. The emotional and social aspects of the bilingual experience will also be discussed. See the Course Guide for a more detailed description. Topics for PSY 3960 are rarely repeated from semester-to-semester, so take advantage of this particular course while you have the chance. PSY 3960 may be used toward the optional opportunity credits within the PSY Electives--make sure you have not met the maximum allowed from these types of courses. Please refer to your major requirement sheet or contact Psychology Advising if you have questions about how this might apply toward your degree.

8.HOME-BASED PARENTING INTERVENTIONS TO PROMOTE CHILD HEALTH

Specific attention will be given to interventions that address parenting skills around healthy eating, physical activity and screen time, and how these interventions affect changes in the home environment and child behavior outcomes. 9.PAID SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION WITH EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT
The Center for Applied Research in Educational Improvement (CAREI) is seeking an undergraduate research assistant (UGRA). The UGRA would work with CAREI researchers at the University of Minnesota to analyze data from two of CAREI's current studies. One study evaluates the development of a K-12 Manadarin Immersion program in three Minnesota school districts. The other study evaluates professional development of art teachers in Minneapolis Public Schools' FACETS (Focus on Arts, Culture and Excellence for Teachers and Students) Project. Both studies are funded by grants through the U.S. Department of Education. The position is for Summer Term. The URGA is expected to start between May 16 and May 22 and continue through the end of August. The position is a paid position covering 15 hours of work per week. Qualifications include a strong background in statistics, research methods, and/or coding survey responses. The Journal of Interpersonal Relations, Intergroup Relations and Identity (JIRIRI) is currently looking for undergraduate students to be part of the editorial board as a reviewer and/or an editor. It is a unique opportunity to acquire experience in the publication process of journal articles and develop one's critical thinking. Those who are interested are invited to contact the Editor in Chief Marie-Josée Leclerc at jiriri@umontreal.ca. The Journal of Interpersonal Relations, Intergroup Relations and Identity (JIRIRI) is an international scientific journal in the field of social psychology which is published once a year. The JIRIRI promotes the creation and expression of new ideas pertaining to the topics of interpersonal relations, intergroup relations, and identity. The JIRIRI is entirely built on the efforts of undergraduate students of the Université de Montréal and the Université du Québec à Montréal in collaboration with Professor Roxane de la Sablonnière. The mission of the JIRIRI is to offer undergraduate students a unique opportunity to fully experience the scientific method, from the development of original ideas to their diffusion, through a peer review committee. 11.STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MCAE MULTICULTURAL KICKOFF IN AUG.
Each year the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence hosts the Multicultural Kickoff, a two day event which helps first-year students make a successful transition to college by building community and identifying academic and cultural supports on campus. Typically 300-400 incoming first year students attend this event and are in small groups led by current student leaders. This year the event is being held on Tuesday, August 28 and Wednesday August 29 and we will need a lot of help to make it a success. That is where you come in! Public Health Solutions (PHS) was founded in 2003 by professionals dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to live in their own communities. PHS is an Adult Corporate Foster Care provider and PCA provider, licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, contracted to provide corporate foster care services in Anoka County and Hennepin County. PHS presently operates ten corporate foster homes in northeast Minneapolis and southern Anoka County and an Adult Day Services Center in Columbia Heights. The individuals supported by PHS have a variety of needs including serious and persistent mental illness and acquired brain injuries. Many of these individuals also have significant medical needs, behavioral challenges, as well as chemical dependency, which are addressed in the context of a safe and appropriate home environment. PHS believes that proper management of co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic illness greatly improves individual's mental health and stability. We work closely with client teams and family members in early interventions to avoid discharging clients from our programs. We design and implement behavior intervention strategies in conjunction with client teams to achieve more functional behavior. We practice a harm reduction approach to chemical dependency. The Department of Psychology is hosting a colloquium speaker from the Personality, Individual Differences, and Behavior Genetics area. Michael Neale, Ph.D., Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University with present on 'Substance Use Disorders: Phenotypes, Genotypes and Putative Endophenotypes.' The measurement of liability to substance abuse and dependence is hampered by many factors. First, symptoms of abuse and dependence cannot be observed among individuals who have not initiated use, but simply scoring such symptoms as absent, and individuals as having low liability to those symptoms makes unlikely assumptions. Second, patterns of substance abuse symptoms and criteria across development may not be well-characterized by currently popular factor, latent class, or growth mixture models. Some alternatives such as regime-switching may prove more suitable for longitudinal data. Finally, although direct measures of the brain, such as those provided by neuroimaging studies, are attractive as possible endophenotypes for substance dependence outcomes, it can prove difficult to assess whether substance use affects brain structure, or vice versa. The potential of twin data to resolve these alternative hypotheses will be considered, and illustrated with measures of nicotine use and cortical thickness measured in twins from the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging. Undergraduate students are needed to help with research-related collection in the Minnesota Twin Registry under Dr. Robert Krueger. This is an excellent 3-4 credit research opportunity for those interested in working within personality, psychopathy, and twin research while still having a flexible schedule. Qualified candidates would demonstrate good academic standing with 3.3 GPA or higher; customer service experience (strongly recommended: telephonic skills); experience with excel, SPSS, and data entry. Strongly recommended classes to have taken include: behavioral genetics, research methods and/or statistics. 5.SUMMER/FALL INTERN & VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE POSITIONS AT TUBMAN
Tubman is currently recruiting students for a number of internship and volunteer opportunities starting either this summer or fall. Here are some of the fantastic opportunities: Youth Advocate- work with children and youth who have experienced family violence. Promote family healing through creation of a fun environment, provision of activities, and respite childcare; Women's Advocate- provide supportive services to women currently living in one of our domestic violence shelters; Transitional Housing Advocate- provide supportive services to families living in Tubman's transitional apartments; Community Advocate- provide supportive counseling, crisis intervention, resources and referrals to individuals who call or walk into Tubman sites; Youth & Young Adult Assistant (YAYA)- assist individuals between the ages of 13-24 who are survivors of dating violence, assault, stalking, or domestic violence. Help them access resources and attain goals of safety, stability, and a violence-free life. Training for summer positions starts on May 19th, so students need to contact Tubman as soon as possible. Match Corps: Merrimack Valley is a full-time, 10.5-month urban education math tutoring fellowship in two high schools in the Merrimack Valley (New England). Gregory Aarons, Ph.D. of the University of California San Diego Psychiatry Department and Child & Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) is currently seeking a research assistant to work on his research studies regarding implementation of evidence-based practice. The lab investigates what it takes to effectively implement clinical practices in community-based settings. We focus on organization and policy factors that affect whether clinical interventions are used effectively with clients and patients. The studies aim to identify and support the organizational factors that improve evidence-based practice implementation, including organizational culture, organizational climate, and leadership. The research also focuses on adaptation of evidence-based practice for health, mental health, and social service settings. Under supervision, the incumbent will work as a Research Assistant for the Child & Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry. The main duties and responsibilities will include: coordinating research participant retention and tracking, preparing and administering survey instruments, managing longitudinal data using SPSS and web-based data collection programs, conducting data coding and analysis, and assisting with preparing reports and presentations. Other duties will be assigned as needed. The ideal candidate will have college level coursework completed in psychology, psychiatry, or a related field or equivalent knowledge or experience, possess knowledge of public sector mental health and social service organizations, and have demonstrated experience managing survey data and performing basic descriptive analyses using SPSS or SAS software. Senior Psychology B.S. majors registered for PSY 3902W Major Project have an alternative option for the required concurrent enrollment in PSY 4/5993. In the past, the research requirement has strictly been fulfilled through volunteering in a research lab of a faculty member as outlined on our webpage. Beginning Fall 2012, a specific PSY 5993 section (-042) will be offered in a course-style format. This option provides an opportunity for students to work individually or in small groups to complete a research study with archival data rather than participating in the current lab of a faculty. Fall 2012's section will be broadly applicable to clinical psychology. The research will consider environmental processes that may be of relevance to the development of psychopathology. In this lab, students will be investigating various ways in which discrete emotions are shaped by others, and what individual differences may be linked with psychopathology, personality characteristics, ethnicity, etc. The course will be taught by Bonnie Klimes-Dougan, Ph.D. and will be held Tuesdays from 9:05 am - 11:00 am. To enroll in this unique PSY 5993 section, please contact Psychology Undergraduate Advising at psyadvis@umn.edu including your name, student ID number, and interest in enrolling in the PSY 5993 course option. We have graduate students from the clinical, developmental, social/evolutionary, and industrial/organizational psychology programs. These students will be sharing their experiences with graduate school from applying to programs to being a student. Come with questions and we're sure they'll be happy to answer them for you! 6.MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY (MHAD) 2012
Join us on April 25th on the Coffman Union front lawn for Mental Health Awareness Day! The purpose of this day is to promote awareness about the sometimes profound impact that suffering from, living with, and recovering from mental health issues have on college students. There will be a feature display titled "Don't Sit In Silence", spoken word performances, and more. Please consider making this day as successful as possible by sharing your personal experience with mental health by submitting a story, volunteering the day or the event, or just stopping by to decorate a T-shirt. 8.'PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE' FILM SCREENING PLUS Q & A

This documentary is timely and critical for all educators and those involved in education. The documentary 'Precious Knowledge' interweaves the stories of students in the Mexican-American Studies Program at Tucson High School. The filmmakers spent an entire year in the classroom filming this innovative social justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students who become engaged, informed, and active in their communities. Along with their harsh anti-immigrant stance, Arizona lawmakers recently passed a bill giving unilateral power to the State Superintendent to abolish Ethnic Studies classes such as these. 'Precious Knowledge' provides an insider's perspective to a historic battle over civil rights as the student leaders in Tucson High fight to save their classes. Following this free public screening, one of the documentary's featured students, Crystal Terriquez, will participate in a Q & A session. 9.HELP DEVELOP ASSESSMENT FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS THIS SATURDAY!
Dr. Ted Christ and his research team are developing a computer adaptive reading test for students in grades 6-12 as part of a joint project between the University of Minnesota's Department of Educational Psychology and the United States Department of Education-Office of Special Education. As part of this project, the lab is conducting an item writing workshop on Saturday, April 21st from 9am to 2pm in the Education Sciences Building (alternate date, April 28th depending on participant schedules) and are looking for talented undergraduates and graduate students from a variety of content areas who can participate. Experience writing assessment items for junior and senior high school students is preferred. Participants will work in small groups to generate reading comprehension assessment items for students in grades 6-12. Lunch will be provided and students will be compensated a $50 gift card. There will be opportunities for some participants to continue as paid item-writers over the next few months. 10.SEEKING UGRAs FOR SOCIAL PSYCH LAB ON EMOTIONAL REACTIONS
We're looking for research assistants to help with piloting and running a study examining individuals' physiological, self-reported, and displayed emotional reactions in response to an emotion-eliciting stimuli. Given the theoretical focus of the project, those interested in relationships may also find the project interesting. Working on this project would involve such tasks as assisting with organizing project materials (e.g., scripts, instructions), working out the kinks in the procedure, and running pilot participants. Full-scale data collection will begin in the fall semester. RAs will be trained on all necessary equipment and procedures. RA's should be comfortable with interacting with participants and giving clear and detailed instructions. Research assistants who can commit to at least 2 semesters (summer/fall, fall/spring) will be given priority. Research assistants who can start in the summer will also be given priority. 11.UGRAs NEEDED FOR RUNNING ROMANTIC COUPLES THROUGH STUDY
We're looking for two RA's to assist in an ongoing interaction observation study on power and influence in romantic couples. RA's will be running participants through a two and a half hour protocol consisting of multiple discussions about existing issues in their relationship and two collaborative tasks. These sessions will primarily be run on weekday evenings (between 4pm- 9pm), but occasionally RA's may need to run sessions on weekends. In addition to running ~2 sessions per week, RA's will attend at 45 min weekly lab meeting. RA's should feel comfortable working with adults from the community and reading/giving instructions while videotaped. Ideally, RA's would be able to stay on for the fall semester. 12.UGRAs NEEDED FOR ASSISTANCE IN LAB ON POWER & INFLUENCE IN COUPLES
We're looking for one RA to also assist in an ongoing interaction observation study on power and influence in romantic couples. This RA would be in charge of checking the email account for an ongoing study and responding to emails from potential participants. Second, they would be conducting literature searches (finding and organizing articles) for a couple new projects starting up this summer. Other tasks may be added based on the interest and competence of the RA. The RA would be expected to check the email account at least twice a day, plus come into the lab to work 4-6 hours per week. Strong candidates will be highly organized and conscientious and comfortable reading/summarizing psychology journal articles. This position is expected to continue into the fall, although an RA who does a good job would be likely to be recruited into a new position in the fall if interested.
