Statistics show that 70% of all jobs are found through networking! Start now! Making connections is a crucial part of your undergraduate student experience, especially within your major. As your major advisors, we want to connect with you! In Psychology Undergraduate Advising we have a great deal of psych-related experience, including having worked in a wide variety of psychology-related positions, completed both undergraduate and graduate programs in psych, traveled and studied abroad, and completed internships and maintained connections with alumni and current graduate students who are working in the field. With that, we would like to invite you to connect with us by scheduling an appointment to simply connect. Relationship building is important, so if there is an advisor who you have met with in the past, or has experience in something that you are interested in, feel free to request a specific advisor. October is a great month for these type of appointments, act now before the rush!

A learning abroad experience will enhance your understanding of psychology through course work, internships or cross-cultural interactions encountered every day while you live and travel in a new country. 5.Idealist Grad Fair
The Idealist Grad Fair is intended to connect prospective students with graduate schools in the fields such as public policy, public administration, international affairs, public health, information science, social work, and lots more. This is a great opportunity to learn more from 80 schools from around the country! The Idealist Grad Fair will be held Monday, October 7, 5:00pm-8:00pm in the Great Hall at Coffman Memorial Union. The event is free, but we would appreciate it if students could please pre-register online. Students will also find more information on all the schools planning to attend, tips to help them prepare for the fair, and a video of a previous event.

Monday, September 30 thru Saturday, October 5 the Health Careers Center is sponsoring Health Careers Week. Special health career exploration events every day of the week! There are main events everyday, but also many special health degree information sessions, some of which are being held especially for Health Careers Week and may not happen again for some time! The College of Vet Med is doing a special info session on the Minneapolis campus, the Program in Mortuary Science is hosting an information session and tour of their lab/facility space, and the School of Public Health is hosting a MPH student panel. These are just a few of many information sessions going on next week. 8.Health Career Fair 2013
Mark your calendar for the 11th annual Health Careers Fair, which will be held Wednesday, October 9th from 1:00pm-4:00pm in the Great Hall of Coffman. This will be the biggest one yet, with over 60 tables for students and guests to visit with, which include health degree options from the U of M and beyond, U of M pre-health student groups, and opportunities for experience both on and off campus. Stop by - ask questions - get answers! This is a great, FREE, way to practice for job or internship interviews. This free event is open to all CLA students. You'll do a practice interview with an employer and receive helpful feedback afterward. Professional recruiters from various companies and organizations facilitate the interviews on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 and Friday, October 4, 2013. Join us on Tuesday, October 1 from 2:30p.m. to 3:30p.m. in 235 Blegen to learn more about internship opportunities at the State Capitol in St. Paul AND how you can receive credit for the internship experience. Dozens of student interns are needed for the upcoming 2014 legislative session which begins in January. 12.PAID Research Position Working with Military Families
Interested in research on Military Families? Interested in work focusing on children, youth and families? This Student Research Assistant position will be working in Dr. Lynne Borden's research lab. Her lab focuses on utilizing research and outreach strategies to enhance the capacity of those that work with, and on behalf of, children, youth, and families. Many of her projects address issues around youth development, early childhood education, deployment, and military families. As a Research Assistant, you will work with our team and provide a variety of support including: assisting with literature searches and reviews, collecting information on various topics, conducting data entry, developing and maintaining a filing system and/or electronic database for storing materials, students may also be involved in helping to organize events such as symposiums, conferences, or meetings with collaborators (10-15 hours/week). Qualifications for the position include: strong organizational, communication, and research skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office products, well-developed research and writing skills, ability to conduct literature searches using University library and other academic databases, ability to work with deadlines and handle diverse work tasks, ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Come learn about the Truman Scholarships, which are awarded to undergraduates who intend to pursue careers in government, education, the non-profit sector, or elsewhere in public service, and who want to make a difference. Applicants must be Juniors and U.S. citizens or nationals. Selection criteria include communication and leadership abilities, a demonstrated commitment to community service and/or political activism, and a strong academic record. The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school. The scholarship has a service requirement. Campus application deadline: November 4, 2013. Alternatives for People with Autism, inc. is currently hiring part time Living Skills Instructors. This position involves assisting and teaching adults affected by autism and developmental delay in the areas of personal care & grooming, domestic skills, community integration, leisure & recreation, adaptive communication, and management/modification of maladaptive behaviors. Applicants must have at least 44 college credits complete, and must be able to fill ALL of the following shifts: AMs (6am-9am), PMs (2pm-10pm), Overnights (11pm-7am, two per month), and Every other weekend. Applicants must be fluent in English and able to work as an effective team member in an energetic, physically demanding environment. Alternatives for People with Autism, Inc. is located in Brooklyn Park, and employees must have reliable transportation to work. $500 per semester scholarships are available to all employees who complete 90 Day Orientation, work at least 24 hours per week, and are enrolled in a full time academic program. The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). Up to two awards of $500 will be offered Fall 2013. A third candidate will be selected to receive the named Natalis Award of $600. The Fall 2013 application deadline is Sept. 20, 2013. If you thought study abroad was not affordable, think again! The Learning Abroad Center is committed to helping you learn more ways to make your dream of studying abroad a reality! Friday September 20th from 1-3pm and Thursday, September 26th from 3-5pm (214 Heller Hall) the Learning Abroad Center will be holding information sessions about study abroad scholarships and financial aid. The sessions will be broken into two parts, the first hour will give you an overview and tools that will help you choose an affordable program and apply for scholarships & financial aid, and the second hour will be specifically for Pell Grant recipients. There are special study abroad scholarships (up to $8000!) for Pell Grant recipients, and the second hour will cover eligibility requirements, application deadlines, process, resources, and tips. 8.Research Opportunities in the Yonas Visual Perception Lab
The Yonas Visual Perception lab focuses on research in infant and child development. Our lab always has a variety of studies for all types of interests including research on Prosopagnosia (Face blindness), Autism Spectrum Disorder and Infant visual perception. Our lab has been featured on 60 minutes for work we do with children who have Prosopagnosia and we are continuously in contact with some of the best research institutes all over the US including MIT, Harvard and Dartmouth. This lab is different than most in that undergraduates get to run most of the studies and have opportunities to create and run their own study. We give out several UROP proposal options and paid positions for those who are well qualified. Only certain students will be accepted into this lab because we need talented and hard working individuals in order to keep the lab running smoothly. Therefore we are only looking for students who are in the honors program or who have GPA equal to or above 3.6 and who can work for two semesters. For those interested in attending medical school, this is the perfect educational opportunity for you to leave with a solid understanding about research and disorders affecting the community today. 9.The Carlson Child Development Lab is looking for research assistants
The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. From offering suggestions for developing protocols to running sessions with children and families, research assistants are afforded every opportunity to pursue their own interests and apply their own skills within our lab. As a Carlson Lab RA, you will interact with some of the leading scientists in the field of child development,. You will also have the chance to contribute to presentations of our research at international conferences and be included in future publications. This is the perfect opportunity to develop important research skills and relationships while learning about children's social cognitive development. Schedules are highly flexible. 2.Fall 2013 Drop-In Hours for Psychology Undergraduate Advising
Due to the high student demand the first two weeks of the term, Psychology Undergraduate Advising will have a drop-in advisor available from 8:00am - 4:30pm M., T., W., F. and 9:30am- 4:30pm Th. for quick five - ten minute issues. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect after Monday, September 16th. After this date, drop-in hours are held by each advisor during a specific time once a week. 3.Schizophrenia Research at the VA Medical Center
A laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System is conducting treatment outcome research to examine how individuals with schizophrenia change as a result of participating in computer-based skills training. There is an opportunity for 4 undergraduate students to become involved with this project as a Research Lab in Psychology experience. The students will learn about the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, with emphasis on symptom severity, social functioning, cognition, and rehabilitation. Student will work as a part of a research team lead by a psychologist and will be involved with multiple aspects of the project, including collecting data, scoring measures, entering data, and piloting of new study protocols. As part of the research experience, students will attend a weekly lab meeting in which topics related to the project are discussed. In addition, students will write an APA style paper on a related topic. All research activities are conducted at the VA Health Care System. Students must be able to commute to the VA. Student will be asked to register for research credit and to commit an average of 9 hours each week between the hours of 8am and 5 pm Monday through Friday. 4.RA Needed for Psychopathology Research at VA Medical Center
Participate in cutting-edge clinical research in the Research Division of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System by serving as a research assistant in the laboratory of Professor Scott Sponheim, PhD. The Minneapolis VA is easily accessible by light rail from the U of M campus. The successful candidate will be a current Junior or Senior pursuing a psychology major, have a GPA of 3.0 or high, and be flexible in hours (evenings/weekends). An interest in graduate school in psychology is a plus. Duties include: 5-10 hours per week in the laboratory, recruiting and scheduling participants, preparing clinical interview materials, attending weekly lab meetings, and data entry. 5.ADAPT Project Seeks Undergraduate Research Assistant
The ADAPT project is seeking observational coders to assess parenting behaviors and dyadic/triadic relationship qualities during 50-minute family problem-solving discussions and teaching tasks. ADAPT is partially supported with funding from the National Institutes Drug Administration and tests the effectiveness of Parent Management Training in a sample of military families. The coding lab is located in the Department of Family Social Science on the St. Paul campus. Please contact Dr. Osnat Zamir at to learn more. Native, fluent speaker of Spanish needed to help with data collection in a language development study in Maria Sera's Language and Cognitive Development Lab for fall and possibly spring semester(s). 7.Research Assistant Position in Prosocial Behavior Lab
The prosocial behavior lab seeks enthusiastic and conscientious research assistants for research investigating helping behavior in Elliott Hall, East Bank. Duties may include lab preparations, running participants, coding, data collection, and entering data. Weekly commitment is 5-10 hours for at least one semester, and you can receive research credit. 8.Research Assistants for Educational Psychology Project
The Department of Educational Psychology is looking for four to six upper level undergraduate students to help with a grant-funded research project. In this third year of the grant, the research team is continuing development of a teaching intervention to improve reading comprehension by struggling fourth graders. Applicants should be interested in working with student's learning data and experiencing educational research. Tasks that selected undergraduates will provide include transcribing recordings of student's oral test responses, scoring, coding, and other data-entry tasks, and producing teaching materials. Selected undergraduates will also attend a bi-weekly lab meeting. Most of the work will be performed in the Education Sciences Building during M-F daytime hours. Undergraduate research assistants may receive course credit (Psy4993) or volunteer 3, 6 or 9 hours per week. 11.Professional Data Analysts Seeks Part-Time Phone Interviewer (PAID!)
Professional Data Analysts, Inc. (PDA) is currently seeking a part-time telephone interviewer to collect data for an evaluation study of the effectiveness of a stop-smoking program. The position will begin in September and finish at the end of June, 2014, with the possibility of extending the position. This is a great opportunity for a young researcher or evaluator to gain hands-on experience with data collection. The interviewer will conduct telephone surveys and interviews with tobacco users who have taken part in a stop-smoking program and have agreed to be contacted by an evaluator. You may be asked to help print advanced letters, stuff and stamp envelopes, and some light data entry for mail survey responses. Due to the high student demand the first two weeks of the term, Psychology Undergraduate Advising will have a drop-in advisor available from 8:00am - 4:30pm M., T., W., F. and 9:30am- 4:30pm Th. for quick five - ten minute issues. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect after Monday, September 16th. After this date, drop-in hours are held by each advisor during a specific time once a week. 3.Schizophrenia Research at the VA Medical Center
A laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System is conducting treatment outcome research to examine how individuals with schizophrenia change as a result of participating in computer-based skills training. There is an opportunity for 4 undergraduate students to become involved with this project as a Research Lab in Psychology experience. The students will learn about the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, with emphasis on symptom severity, social functioning, cognition, and rehabilitation. Student will work as a part of a research team lead by a psychologist and will be involved with multiple aspects of the project, including collecting data, scoring measures, entering data, and piloting of new study protocols. As part of the research experience, students will attend a weekly lab meeting in which topics related to the project are discussed. In addition, students will write an APA style paper on a related topic. All research activities are conducted at the VA Health Care System. Students must be able to commute to the VA. Student will be asked to register for research credit and to commit an average of 9 hours each week between the hours of 8am and 5 pm Monday through Friday. 4.RA Needed for Psychopathology Research at VA Medical Center
Participate in cutting-edge clinical research in the Research Division of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System by serving as a research assistant in the laboratory of Professor Scott Sponheim, PhD. The Minneapolis VA is easily accessible by light rail from the U of M campus. The successful candidate will be a current Junior or Senior pursuing a psychology major, have a GPA of 3.0 or high, and be flexible in hours (evenings/weekends). An interest in graduate school in psychology is a plus. Duties include: 5-10 hours per week in the laboratory, recruiting and scheduling participants, preparing clinical interview materials, attending weekly lab meetings, and data entry. 5.ADAPT Project Seeks Undergraduate Research Assistant
The ADAPT project is seeking observational coders to assess parenting behaviors and dyadic/triadic relationship qualities during 50-minute family problem-solving discussions and teaching tasks. ADAPT is partially supported with funding from the National Institutes Drug Administration and tests the effectiveness of Parent Management Training in a sample of military families. Native, fluent speaker of Spanish needed to help with data collection in a language development study in Maria Sera's Language and Cognitive Development Lab for fall and possibly spring semester(s). Psychology, Child Psychology, or Education majors who have experience working with children, and have taken statistics and research methods preferred. 7.Research Assistant Position in Prosocial Behavior Lab
The prosocial behavior lab seeks enthusiastic and conscientious research assistants for research investigating helping behavior in Elliott Hall, East Bank. Duties may include lab preparations, running participants, coding, data collection, and entering data. Weekly commitment is 5-10 hours for at least one semester, and you can receive research credit. 8.Research Assistants for Educational Psychology Project
The Department of Educational Psychology is looking for four to six upper level undergraduate students to help with a grant-funded research project. In this third year of the grant, the research team is continuing development of a teaching intervention to improve reading comprehension by struggling fourth graders. Applicants should be interested in working with student's learning data and experiencing educational research. Tasks that selected undergraduates will provide include transcribing recordings of student's oral test responses, scoring, coding, and other data-entry tasks, and producing teaching materials. Selected undergraduates will also attend a bi-weekly lab meeting. Most of the work will be performed in the Education Sciences Building during M-F daytime hours. Undergraduate research assistants may receive course credit (Psy4993) or volunteer 3, 6 or 9 hours per week. 11.Professional Data Analysts Seeks Part-Time Phone Interviewer (PAID!)
Professional Data Analysts, Inc. (PDA) is currently seeking a part-time telephone interviewer to collect data for an evaluation study of the effectiveness of a stop-smoking program. The position will begin in September and finish at the end of June, 2014, with the possibility of extending the position. This is a great opportunity for a young researcher or evaluator to gain hands-on experience with data collection. The interviewer will conduct telephone surveys and interviews with tobacco users who have taken part in a stop-smoking program and have agreed to be contacted by an evaluator. You may be asked to help print advanced letters, stuff and stamp envelopes, and some light data entry for mail survey responses.
