Come to the biggest student career fair in Minnesota! More than 200 companies and organizations will be at the U of M Job and Internship Fair recruiting for hundreds of jobs and internships. This year registered participants will get a free professional headshot photo for LinkedIn and other social media! Photographers will be on site during the entire event. The Fair will be held from 10:00am - 4:00pm on Friday, February 21st at the Minneapolis Convention Center (Free transportation to and from campus is provided!). 5.Active Minds and Mental Health Awareness Day Meetings
Active Minds is a student-run mental health advocacy group devoted to educating students about mental health issues and reducing the stigma of mental illness. They will be hosting a meeting this Wednesday, February 12th at 7:00-8:00pm, Coffman 213. The meeting will be a game night/party to break away from the winter blues. Feel free to bring games/food to share and get to know the other Active Minds Members and Mental Health Awareness Day volunteers! Then, from 8:00pm-9:00pm the Mental Health Awareness Day planning committee will meet. 8.ADAPT Looking for Undergraduate Assistants for Summer
Are you searching for research experience on a federally-funded study to strengthen your training and expertise? Would you like to learn about parent-child relationships in families experiencing military deployment? Are you interested in observing parents interact with their school-aged children? Are you interested in observing parents interact with their school-aged children? Are you reliable, detail-oriented, and a team player? If you answered yes to these questions and are interested in learning about observational coding on the ADAPT (After Deployment: Adaptive Parenting Tools) project in summer 2014, contact Dr. Osnat Zamir to learn more, or check out ADAPT online. The work includes assessment of parenting behaviors and dyadic/triadic relationship interactions. The coding lab is located at the Department of Family Social Science on the St. Paul campus at the University of Minnesota.

9.Developmental Psychopathology Research (Cicchetti Lab)
Researchers at the Institute of Child Development are currently seeking motivated undergraduate students who are interesting in participating in developmental psychopathology research. Our project may be of particular interest for those pursuing research experiences in clinical or developmental psychology, with emphasis on caregiver-child relations, social-emotion and language development. Students who are native English speakers and can commit to 6 to 10 hours a week with a minimum of 2 semesters are preferred. Lab duties include transcribing videos, coding linguistic and affective data, and data entry. Opportunities to be involved in professional presentations may be offered pending on the commitment of the student. Our project is flexible to the schedule of interested undergraduates and hours accrued this semester can be rolled over toward the next. 16.Research Assistant Position Available at the VA Health Care System
We are currently accepting applications for a GS-7 level Research Assistant to join Project STRIVE - a randomized clinical trial investigating treatment for PTSD and co-morbid substance use disorder. Individuals interested in gaining applied research experience in order to advance their career development in the field of clinical psychology or related fields are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will join an active team of clinician investigators at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System conducting research on post-deployment mental health among combat veterans, including post-traumatic stress, risk and resilience factors, and treatment outcome evaluation. The Research Assistant will work closely with study project coordinator and investigators to ensure research activities run smoothly. Specific duties include: Assisting project team with subject recruitment, scheduling screening interviews with potential participants, obtaining informed consent, data collection, conducting literature searches, preparing literature reviews and bibliographies, assisting team with basic statistical analyses and preparing reports, and assisting in manuscript preparation and development of grant proposals. 8.Research Opportunity in Ed Psych
Looking for two to three undergraduate or graduate students to help as intervention tutors. The purpose of this project is to examine the effects of data-based instruction for improving young students' writing performance. The tutors will deliver writing intervention three times per week for 30-min per session over 13 weeks with students in grade 1 to 3. We will have one-hour weekly meeting. Undergraduate research assistants may receive course credit (Psy4993). This is a great opportunity to be involved in research and work with students in schools. 9.Latino Mental Health Research Training
The deadline for submission of application has been extended to February 10, 2014 for the NIH/NIMHD-funded Minority Health and Health Disparities International Training Program (MHIRT). Undergraduate, post-baccalaureates and pre-doctoral level students interested in conducting mental health research in Mexico during the summer of 2014 who meet the eligibility are encouraged to apply. Eligibility: 3.0 GPA or better, research career orientation, demonstrated interest in and/or commitment to reducing health disparities, excellent Spanish language oral and written skills, background in statistics and/or demonstrated social/behavioral sciences research experience, undergraduates with junior or senior class standing for 2013-2014, post-baccalaureates and pre-doctoral level students, U.S. citizen, permanent resident, non-citizen national, from a group with health disparities including African American, Asian American, Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander or other relevant groups. 10.Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Grants Available
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. 11.The Carlson Child Development Lab is looking for research assistants
The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. From offering suggestions for developing protocols to running sessions with children and families, research assistants are afforded every opportunity to pursue their own interests and apply their own skills within our lab. As a Carlson Lab RA, you will interact with some of the leading scientists in the field of child development,. You will also have the chance to contribute to presentations of our research at international conferences and be included in future publications. This is the perfect opportunity to develop important research skills and relationships while learning about children's social cognitive development. Schedules are highly flexible. Undergraduate research assistant opportunities are available in Dr. James Lee's lab. Dr. Lee is seeking undergraduate students who are interested in the area of measuring Individual Differences and Behavioral Genetics (human brain size and evolution). Students are expected to devote at least 5 hours per week performing literature readings, data collection, entry and attending lab meetings once a week. This is a volunteer position in Spring 2014 term but he would like students to take PSY 5993 Directed Research from Fall 2014 term. We are looking for committed, enthusiastic volunteers to help run our amazing summer camp experience this year. Are you searching for research experience on a federally-funded study to strengthen your training and expertise? Would you like to learn about parent-child relationships in families experiencing military deployment? Are you interested in observing parents interact with their school-aged children? Are you interested in observing parents interact with their school-aged children? Are you reliable, detail-oriented, and a team player? If you answered yes to these questions and are interested in learning about observational coding on the ADAPT (After Deployment: Adaptive Parenting Tools) project in summer 2014, contact Dr. Osnat Zamir to learn more, or check out ADAPT online. 8.Research Opportunity in Ed Psych
Looking for two to three undergraduate or graduate students to help as intervention tutors. The purpose of this project is to examine the effects of data-based instruction for improving young students' writing performance. The tutors will deliver writing intervention three times per week for 30-min per session over 13 weeks with students in grade 1 to 3. We will have one-hour weekly meeting. Undergraduate research assistants may receive course credit (Psy4993). This is a great opportunity to be involved in research and work with students in schools. The deadline for submission of application has been extended to February 10, 2014 for the NIH/NIMHD-funded Minority Health and Health Disparities International Training Program (MHIRT). Undergraduate, post-baccalaureates and pre-doctoral level students interested in conducting mental health research in Mexico during the summer of 2014 who meet the eligibility are encouraged to apply. The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. From offering suggestions for developing protocols to running sessions with children and families, research assistants are afforded every opportunity to pursue their own interests and apply their own skills within our lab. 1.Spring 2014 Drop-In Hours for Psychology Advising
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated drop-in hours. While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds drop-in hours once a week and cannot address drop-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified drop-in times. Due to high student demand, we will have an advisor available for 5 - 10 minute issues from 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday the remainder of this week. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect after Monday, February 3rd. This semester's drop-in hours for the Psychology Advisors can be found on our website.

Adolescents differ from adults physiologically, cognitively, and emotionally. Therefore, it is important for professionals who come into regular contact with this population to be familiar with the developmental issues and current trends in adolescent substance use. It is also essential to be able to recognize the risk and protective factors, bio-psycho-social effects, and signs of potential substance use problems in adolescents. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. 9.DVBIC Research Intern
The research intern will assist research staff at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC). Responsibilities will include: preparing study materials, scoring clinical scales, working with testing software, verifying accuracy of study data, conducting computer-based cognitive testing, and assessing participants. This position will also involve working with relational databases and basic computer programming. The patient population will include military personnel or veterans with traumatic brain injury and other mental health issues. Qualified candidate must be highly motivated, able to work independently, extremely detail oriented, and willing to develop new skills as the need arises. Candidate must have excellent communication (written and oral), organizational and interpersonal skills; strong computer skills required; comfortable using basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and web applications. Some background with statistical software and relational databases. Minimum Experience: Pursuing a degree in psychology or related field. 10.NIDA Summer Research Opportunity
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites high school and undergraduate students to submit applications for the 2014 Summer Research Program. Under this program students underrepresented in the biomedical, social, clinical and behavioral sciences are paired with NIDA funded scientists at research institutions across the United States for 8-10 weeks during the summer to work in the field of substance abuse and addiction research. Internships may involve a variety of experiences including laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, patient interviews, and literature reviews. Student interns receive a stipend, and if necessary and eligible, provisions for travel and housing expenses. The deadline to submit applications for the 2014 program is February 14, 2014. 11.Chicago Center for Systems Biology Summer Research Program
The Chicago Center for Systems Biology is offering its 6th REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program this summer. The Center seeks qualified undergraduates for 2014 REU fellowships. Stipends are $4,000 for ten-week projects. They will be awarded on a competitive basis based on academic excellence, motivation, scientific potential, compatibility of personal interests, and long-term career goals aligned with research programs of the CCSB. Applicants with computational science backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. All participants must be U.S. citizens (or permanent residents) and be enrolled in (but not yet graduated from) an accredited undergraduate college degree program with a concentration in a biological science field. If selected, students will be matched with a research mentor. During the program participants will be invited to lab meetings and seminars. In addition, they will have access to libraries, athletic facilities, and University-sponsored events. At the conclusion of the summer projects, students will produce a summary report and present their findings at an REU Symposium in the Gordon Center for Integrative Science at the University of Chicago. 19.Transfer Counselor Position at U of M Rochester
The University of Minnesota Rochester is seeking to fill a newly created position of Transfer Counselor in the Office of Admissions. This position will be responsible for the management of undergraduate transfer course evaluation and a web-based course equivalency database Degree Audit Report System (DARS) at UMR. The Transfer Counselor will work closely with UMTC staff to align UMR processes and procedures with regard to transfer. In addition, the Transfer Counselor will provide leadership in coordinating and executing the recruitment, application, and matriculation plan for all transfer students to UMR. He/she will work on cross-functional teams to create awareness and transparency of UMR degree programs to prospective transfer students and the general advising community. 1.Spring 2014 Drop-In Hours for Psychology Advising
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated drop-in hours. While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds drop-in hours once a week and cannot address drop-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified walk-in times. Due to high student demand, we will have an advisor available for 5 - 10 minute issues from 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday for the first two weeks of the term. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect after Monday, February 3rd. This semester's drop-in hours for the Psychology Advisors can be found on our website.

The Mn. Center for Twin and Family Research has an Undergraduate Research Assistant position available. The job will begin a.s.a.p. The position will be 10-15 hrs/week during academic year and the same during the summer. Salary is $10.51/hr. 6.Undergraduate Research Assistants Needed - Conflict Mediation
The Conflict Mediation Lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants to start work during the spring semester, earning research credit for PSY 5993. RAs will be assisting with coding participants' written responses from conflict mediation sessions and data analysis in a study examining the effect of verbal and non-verbal behaviors on conflict mediation outcomes. Responsibilities include coding mediation data as well as attending a weekly team lab meeting, held on Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. The position runs during the spring semester, with the opportunity to continue into the next fall. RAs will be expected to work approximately 9 hours per week (may vary across weeks). 8.Yale Cognition & Development Lab's 2014 Research Internship Program
Applications to participate in the Yale Cognition & Development Lab's 2014 research internship program are now available online. This annual summer internship provides the opportunity for highly motivated undergraduate students to gain an intensive, hands-on research experience in cognitive science and developmental psychology, in close partnership with our full-time lab members. 9.DVBIC Research Intern
The research intern will assist research staff at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC). Responsibilities will include: preparing study materials, scoring clinical scales, working with testing software, verifying accuracy of study data, conducting computer-based cognitive testing, and assessing participants. This position will also involve working with relational databases and basic computer programming. The patient population will include military personnel or veterans with traumatic brain injury and other mental health issues. Qualified candidate must be highly motivated, able to work independently, extremely detail oriented, and willing to develop new skills as the need arises. Candidate must have excellent communication (written and oral), organizational and interpersonal skills; strong computer skills required; comfortable using basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and web applications. Some background with statistical software and relational databases. Minimum Experience: Pursuing a degree in psychology or related field. 10.NIDA Summer Research Opportunity
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites high school and undergraduate students to submit applications for the 2014 Summer Research Program. Under this program students underrepresented in the biomedical, social, clinical and behavioral sciences are paired with NIDA funded scientists at research institutions across the United States for 8-10 weeks during the summer to work in the field of substance abuse and addiction research. Internships may involve a variety of experiences including laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, patient interviews, and literature reviews. Student interns receive a stipend, and if necessary and eligible, provisions for travel and housing expenses. The deadline to submit applications for the 2014 program is February 14, 2014. 11.Chicago Center for Systems Biology Summer Research Program
The Chicago Center for Systems Biology is offering its 6th REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program this summer. The Center seeks qualified undergraduates for 2014 REU fellowships. Stipends are $4,000 for ten-week projects. They will be awarded on a competitive basis based on academic excellence, motivation, scientific potential, compatibility of personal interests, and long-term career goals aligned with research programs of the CCSB. Applicants with computational science backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. All participants must be U.S. citizens (or permanent residents) and be enrolled in (but not yet graduated from) an accredited undergraduate college degree program with a concentration in a biological science field. If selected, students will be matched with a research mentor. During the program participants will be invited to lab meetings and seminars. In addition, they will have access to libraries, athletic facilities, and University-sponsored events. At the conclusion of the summer projects, students will produce a summary report and present their findings at an REU Symposium in the Gordon Center for Integrative Science at the University of Chicago. SUMR is a paid summer internship at the University of Pennsylvania. SUMR introduces minority undergraduate students and interested others to the field of health services research. In addition to conducting research, SUMR Scholars participate in an orientation program, attend weekly seminars, attend the Academy Health Annual Research Meeting, take a GRE prep course, and network with health services researchers and epidemiologists. 19.Transfer Counselor Position at U of M Rochester
The University of Minnesota Rochester is seeking to fill a newly created position of Transfer Counselor in the Office of Admissions. This position will be responsible for the management of undergraduate transfer course evaluation and a web-based course equivalency database Degree Audit Report System (DARS) at UMR. The Transfer Counselor will work closely with UMTC staff to align UMR processes and procedures with regard to transfer. In addition, the Transfer Counselor will provide leadership in coordinating and executing the recruitment, application, and matriculation plan for all transfer students to UMR. He/she will work on cross-functional teams to create awareness and transparency of UMR degree programs to prospective transfer students and the general advising community. The Transfer Counselor will serve as the academic advisor for Bachelor of Science in Health Professions (BSHP) students to help guide them throughout their collegiate career and ensure they are progressing academically and have access to resources that will support them. The BSHP is an educational collaboration with Mayo School of Health Sciences in the growing patient care professions of Echocardiography, Sonography, Respiratory Care and Radiography. 3.RA Needed for Psychopathology Research at VA Medical Center
Participate in cutting-edge clinical research in the Research Division of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System by serving as a research assistant in the laboratory of Professor Scott Sponheim, PhD. The Minneapolis VA is easily accessible by light rail from the U of M campus. The successful candidate will be a current Junior or Senior pursuing a psychology major, have a GPA of 3.0 or high, and be flexible in hours (evenings/weekends). An interest in graduate school in psychology is a plus. Duties include: 5-10 hours per week in the laboratory, recruiting and scheduling participants, preparing clinical interview materials, attending weekly lab meetings, and data entry. 9.Apply For Summer Research Opportunities Now!
Many research institutions across the nation have stipend summer research programs that invite students to work closely with faculty and graduate students on research projects over the summer (as you can see in many of the posts in this week's Scoop). These programs are a great opportunity to see what it would be like to be a psychology graduate student in a research program. They provide first-hand experience in advanced research, intensive guidance, networking and preparation for grad school admissions process (crafting CV and personal statement, preparation for the GRE etc.). They also provide an unforgettable summer with various social activities/events planned. You will spend a lot of time with other students from different states and disciplines that are also passionate about their research. Programs like these are competitive, and the applications are due soon. Winter break would be a great time to explore some of the available opportunities and begin the applications. The sooner you start on the applications the better because you will likely be asked to provide 2-3 letters of recommendation and a personal statement. Please keep in mind that some of these programs have specific criteria, such as citizenship, academic standards, and/or are catered for under represented populations of students, so read the eligibility carefully.

12.Transfer Counselor Position at U of M Rochester
The University of Minnesota Rochester is seeking to fill a newly created position of Transfer Counselor in the Office of Admissions. This position will be responsible for the management of undergraduate transfer course evaluation and a web-based course equivalency database Degree Audit Report System (DARS) at UMR. The Transfer Counselor will work closely with UMTC staff to align UMR processes and procedures with regard to transfer. In addition, the Transfer Counselor will provide leadership in coordinating and executing the recruitment, application, and matriculation plan for all transfer students to UMR. He/she will work on cross-functional teams to create awareness and transparency of UMR degree programs to prospective transfer students and the general advising community. The Transfer Counselor will serve as the academic advisor for Bachelor of Science in Health Professions (BSHP) students to help guide them throughout their collegiate career and ensure they are progressing academically and have access to resources that will support them. 3.RA Needed for Psychopathology Research at VA Medical Center
Participate in cutting-edge clinical research in the Research Division of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System by serving as a research assistant in the laboratory of Professor Scott Sponheim, PhD. The Minneapolis VA is easily accessible by light rail from the U of M campus. The successful candidate will be a current Junior or Senior pursuing a psychology major, have a GPA of 3.0 or high, and be flexible in hours (evenings/weekends). An interest in graduate school in psychology is a plus. Duties include: 5-10 hours per week in the laboratory, recruiting and scheduling participants, preparing clinical interview materials, attending weekly lab meetings, and data entry. Opportunities are available to conduct your own research project. This may be done as a volunteer or for PSY 4993 research credit. 4.DVBIC Research Intern
The research intern will assist research staff at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC). Responsibilities will include: preparing study materials, scoring clinical scales, working with testing software, verifying accuracy of study data, conducting computer-based cognitive testing, and assessing participants. This position will also involve working with relational databases and basic computer programming. The patient population will include military personnel or veterans with traumatic brain injury and other mental health issues. Qualified candidate must be highly motivated, able to work independently, extremely detail oriented, and willing to develop new skills as the need arises. Candidate must have excellent communication (written and oral), organizational and interpersonal skills; strong computer skills required; comfortable using basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and web applications. Some background with statistical software and relational databases. Minimum Experience: Pursuing a degree in psychology or related field. 5.NIDA Summer Research Opportunity
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites high school and undergraduate students to submit applications for the 2014 Summer Research Program. Under this program students underrepresented in the biomedical, social, clinical and behavioral sciences are paired with NIDA funded scientists at research institutions across the United States for 8-10 weeks during the summer to work in the field of substance abuse and addiction research. Internships may involve a variety of experiences including laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, patient interviews, and literature reviews. Student interns receive a stipend, and if necessary and eligible, provisions for travel and housing expenses. The deadline to submit applications for the 2014 program is February 14, 2014. 6.Chicago Center for Systems Biology Summer Research Program
The Chicago Center for Systems Biology is offering its 6th REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program this summer. The Center seeks qualified undergraduates for 2014 REU fellowships. Stipends are $4,000 for ten-week projects. They will be awarded on a competitive basis based on academic excellence, motivation, scientific potential, compatibility of personal interests, and long-term career goals aligned with research programs of the CCSB. Applicants with computational science backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. All participants must be U.S. citizens (or permanent residents) and be enrolled in (but not yet graduated from) an accredited undergraduate college degree program with a concentration in a biological science field. If selected, students will be matched with a research mentor. During the program participants will be invited to lab meetings and seminars. In addition, they will have access to libraries, athletic facilities, and University-sponsored events. At the conclusion of the summer projects, students will produce a summary report and present their findings at an REU Symposium in the Gordon Center for Integrative Science at the University of Chicago. SUMR is a paid summer internship at the University of Pennsylvania. SUMR introduces minority undergraduate students and interested others to the field of health services research. In addition to conducting research, SUMR Scholars participate in an orientation program, attend weekly seminars, attend the Academy Health Annual Research Meeting, take a GRE prep course, and network with health services researchers and epidemiologists. Our most popular opportunity is as a One to One, offering friendship to an inmate or someone recently released, as he or she works to build a new life. One to One requires only a few hours each month and a one-year commitment to the relationship. Internship opportunities are also available through Amicus Reconnect, a program and drop-in center providing information, referrals, and specialized one-on-one planning tailored to the specific challenges that come with having a criminal background.
