3.De-Stress with Furry & Feathered Friends
If you’re feeling stressed, come to Coffey Hall on the St. Paul campus on a selectTuesday, March 24th and spend time with one of the registered therapy animals at PAWS (Pet Away Worry and Stress). There are dogs, cats, rabbits, and Woodstock, the chicken. Animal interactions have been demonstrated to positively affect blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormone levels in Humans.

4.Start the Semester Off On the Wrong Foot? LASK 1101 Can Help
If you're having some difficulties this semester, LASK 1001 might be a great B-term course for you. LASK 1101 is a 1-credit, mid-semester course that offers assistance over the 2nd half of the semester to students experiencing academic concerns. In LASK 1101, students receive weekly instruction and the opportunity to consult with students facing similar challenges. This course requires instructor permission to register, and registration closes in March, so interested students should contact theSASS (Student Academic Success Services) front desk at (612) 624-3323 as soon as possible for more information.

6.Medical Laboratory Science Courses
If you enjoy science and may be considering a career in a medical setting, the Medical Laboratory Science (formally Clinical Laboratory Science) program is offering several courses this summer and/or fall that may be the perfect compliment to your Psychology major. Courses include: MLSP 1010: Introduction to Medical Laboratory Sciences (1 credit); MLSP 5011W - Professional Issues in the Health Care Community (WI); MLSP 5311 - Fundamental Biomedical Laboratory Techniques; and MLSP 5511 Principles of Immunobiology. 7.Complement your Psy Major with a GWSS Course

GWSS 3415:Feminist Perspectives on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence (3 credits) is a course that focuses on the history of and contemporary thinking about activism, social change, public policies, and legal remedies directed toward sexual assault and domestic violence, particularly from the point of view of feminism. The course deals, for example, with how notions of privacy and assumptions about traditional gender roles contribute to attitudes toward stranger sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Readings offer insight into early links between slavery and rape, between the temperance movement and domestic violence, and between views of child abuse and sexual abuse, as well as the increasing roles of psychiatry and social work in addressing such violence. The course traces how these historical foundations and cultural attitudes help determine contemporary responses by legal and law enforcement officials, and the course covers such diverse topics as sexual abuse of men and women in prison; incest; child abuse; elder abuse; sex trafficking; and sex offender treatment. Students read a memoir (Alice Seabold's Lucky) about surviving sexual assault and view a film (The Accused) as well as read historical and analytical texts. The course ends with a close look at a project by the president of William Mitchell College of Law on sexual predator laws, in terms of their effectiveness, feminist perspectives, and impact on Constitutional rights. Other speakers include a representative from a non-profit group devoted to stopping sexual assault and domestic violence, the former head of the Minneapolis Police Department Sex Crimes Unit, a police officer specializing in stopping stalking and domestic homicide, and a representative from an organization dedicated to restoring lives of offenders through clinical therapy. 6.Volunteer Needed for Prospective Brain Injury Study at VAMC

A research laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center has an immediate opening for a Psychology or Neuroscience major interested in biopsychology and/or traumatic brain injury research. Dr. Nicholas Davenport's prospective study examines National Guard soldiers prior to and after completing military training to determine if experiences encountered during training (i.e. stress, concussion, etc.) have an effect on thinking and cognition, and if this trajectory can be seen in the structure and function of the brain. The ideal applicant is a junior or senior, has a GPA around 3.5 or higher, and has completed courses in psychopathology (i.e. abnormal psychology), biopsychology or fundamental neuroscience, and statistics. The ideal applicant would also be able to commit about 10 hours per week for a minimum of six months. Responsibilities will depend on the applicant’s interests, as well as the current needs of the study, but will likely begin with data entry and participant recruitment and may expand into cognitive assessments, clinical interviewing, and MRI data collection and processing. This is a volunteer position. Experience on this study can be used to support program research requirements and entry into graduate school. Peer Research Consultants (PRCs) have openings to meet with students now! The Peer Research Consultants provide one-on-one assistance and give students an overview of using the libraries for research, formulating a paper topic and search, helping students to find scholarly articles, books, and more based on an individuals needs. They are upper-level undergraduates who have gone through 10+ hours of training on using the libraries. Many students find it very helpful, including International students.We have drop-in hours in Walter SMART Learning Commons or in MCAE in Appleby Hall or students can make an appointment.

The Psychology Diversity Council is a relatively new entity of the Psychology Department, and we are still trying to figure out how we can be most helpful. The Diversity Council's mission is to engage diverse students in the Department of Psychology and ensure their experiences and perspectives are represented in departmental decision-making. To ensure the curriculum, classes and student services and opportunities are equally accessible to all psychology majors. Future topics and events are tailored to student interests, so input and ideas are greatly appreciated. Any feedback, ideas, comments, suggestions, etc. can be submitted anonymously online. 9.NEW Programs in Thailand!

The Learning Abroad Center is launching 2 new programs in Chiang Mai, Thailand starting this August 2015. There will be an Intensive Thai program and an MSID International Development program. With its fascinating cultural sites and wide array of environmental diversity, Thailand has long been a popular destination for travelers the world over, and it serves as a major hub of industry, agriculture, and tourism. The Learning Abroad Center sponsors several Minnesota Studies in International Development (MSID) programs around the world, but this Fall 2015 will be the first MSID program in Thailand. MSID programs are a great fit for Psychology Students because ‘learning from experience’ is the core of MSID programs. The programs put students in direct contact with the social and economic realities of actual communities and of people working within them to address complex problems. Through classes, field trips, internships and research, MSID strives to establish a continual dialogue linking experience with theory and critical analysis (Learn more about the MSID mission and educational philosophy). In addition to the new MSID program in Thailand, the Learning Abroad Center will also be sponsoring an Intensive Thai program that can be a short (3-week) experience, or combined with the MSIDsemester/academic-year program for an extended experience abroad. Students on the intensive Thai program will develop and strengthen Thai speaking, writing, listening and reading skills while learning about local Thai culture. A one-time discount of $800 is available to students who participate in the Fall 2015 MSID program, and a one-time discount of $400 is available to students who participate in the August 2015 Intensive Thai program, so check them out now! The Minneapolis Health Department is recruiting for an AmeriCorps VISTA to support our youth violence prevention efforts. The VISTA will join our team to assist with development and implementation of a hospital-based intervention program for youth victims of violent assault injuries, coordination of training around youth violence prevention for medical professionals and community partners, implementation of a social-emotional learning curriculum in partnership with the University of Minnesota and a capacity building institute for community-based organizations. VISTA is a 12 month full-time commitment, and the term of service is June 2015-June 2016. VISTAs must have a college degree by the beginning of the service time, be US citizens, nationals, or legal residents, and pass a criminal background check. They cannot be employed in any other paid position while serving as a VISTA member. They will receive a bi-weekly living
allowance, health coverage, and an education award or end-of-service stipend. You can find more details about this great opportunity and apply online. 5.Stress-Busting Session with Active Minds & MSA

Join Active Minds meeting at their next meeting, this Thursday 3/5. They will be joining MSA and the Art of Living Club for a stress-busting session including breathing techniques and some guided meditation in the MSA office Coffman 202 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Afterward there will be a half hour brainstorming session about the current state of mental health and self care on campus and how we can improve it!

6.Mental Health Day on the Hill – March 12, 2015

A special invitation goes out to students to join us for Mental Health Day on the Hill on March 12, 2015. This is a great opportunity for students who would like to view the legislature in action. Before we go to the Capitol, we will meet in the morning to learn about the legislative process, how best to approach and talk with legislators, and get a summary of MPA’s legislative agenda. We will go over and meet with legislators in groups and talk about the profession of psychology in general, how we might be of help to the legislator, and discuss our current legislative agenda. We will meet in the morning at 9:30 AM at Ewald Consulting Office located at 1000 Westgate Dr., Suite 252, in St. Paul. Students who are interested should send an email to trishas@visi.com. 7.De-Stigmatize Mental Health! Call for Artists

Boynton Health Service is sponsoring a “Call for Artists” for a juried art exhibition focused on de-stigmatizing mental health on the University of Minnesota campus and demonstrating the value of art for healing and stress reduction. Open to all Twin Cities’ students, staff and faculty artists; the deadline to submit artwork is Monday, March 30, 2015. You are welcome to submit works of art related to mental health. Works may reference specific conditions such as stress, depression or anxiety, or effective coping strategies, life balance, stigma reduction, and other mental health-related themes. Our goal is to promote conversation around mental health and increase awareness of how the creation and contemplation of art can be proactive strategies to manage stress and address mental illness. Works chosen by the Review Committee will be displayed in Boynton’s East Bank Clinic (Third Floor Gallery), and at a public exhibit. To submit your artwork, complete a submission form online AND email up to three digital images (less than 1 MB each) to kelwell@umn.edu. Artwork should be no larger than 48" tall x 48" wide x 4" deep—and framed and ready for hanging (no sculptures please). With each submission, you must include: Title of artwork, Year, Medium, Dimensions, and a short description of the work and how it relates to a particular mental health issue. If you have submission questions please contact Kate Elwell at kelwell@umn.edu. You can help frame and normalize the mental health conversation, which is the No. 1 health issue here on campus.

There are several upcoming opportunities this spring for students interested in learning more about the degree programs offered at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. During these hour-long sessions, students will hear from admissions staff, program faculty and current students, while learning more about curriculum and career prospects. We welcome students from all majors who may be interested in learning more about graduate studies and careers in public affairs-related fields. The Link Is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization with over 20 years of experience working at-risk youth. The Link has three program areas or what we call “Divisions.” Our program divisions, Housing and Homeless Services, Juvenile Justice and Safe Harbor provide front-end prevention and supportive services to youth who are at risk of (or currently experiencing) homelessness, dropping out of school, sexual exploitation and involvement in the criminal justice system. The Link prides itself on its innovative, trauma informed, strength-based programming for youth. 12.Summer 2015 Internship Opportunity with Congressman Keith Ellison
Congressman Keith Ellison is looking for the next group of smart, hardworking, and dedicated students for a Summer 2015 internship opportunity in his Minneapolis office. Internships are offered for individuals interested in learning the operations of a Congressional office: current events as they relate to Congressional activity, federal legislation and policy issues, constituent services, and events research and planning. Interns are asked to work at least 15 hours per week, and are partnered with supervisors in their areas of interest. Unfortunately, due to House ethics guidelines, we are not able to offer compensation to interns. People of color, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ individuals, and those from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. YouthCARE’s Camp Sunrise is currently accepting applications for the summer season. We have a variety of positions open including some for those with little Youth Work experience to those with more extensive experience. WEB DESIGNER
A web designer works with a unique combination of psychology, information technology, and art. If you are a technical person with a good eye, consider this field.

Web designers develop and design the look and functionality of web pages for a variety of clients. This involves planning layout and organization, color and image use, and creating graphic designs. Installation and maintenance of these web pages are also typically involved. You will use your knowledge of psychology in determining what designs will make people feel secure, enjoy browsing the page, and navigate successfully and logically through the important points of the page. Both the quantitative and social aspects of psychology will be used frequently in this field.

Educational path:
While psychology provides an important background in perception and consumer decision-making, you will want to incorporate technology use and art into your education as well. Sample courses, minor, or double-major in graphic design, art, or the information technology infrastructure major. There are a variety of different certificate programs in the informational technology field offered at technical colleges in the area if you would like to complete postgraduate education to meet job qualifications.

3.Gilman Scholarship & Essay Writing Workshop - TOMORROW

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S.-citizen, undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Applicants must be Pell Grant-eligible (check your eFAAN to confirm). Nearly 30% of students who apply for a Gilman scholarship win (average award $3000 - $3500), and the University of Minnesota saw 17 students win the award during the last year. The Learning Abroad Center and MCAE Instructional Center are offering a scholarship essay writing workshop TOMORROW Wednesday, February 25 - 3:00-4:30pm in 41 Appleby Hall to help you increase your odds of winning the Gilman scholarship. At this workshop, you will learn how to craft a quality essay/personal statement. Bring a draft of your essay to the session or email it in advance to thuydoan@umn.edu. We will provide individual feedback in addition to general writing tips. Students without a completed draft are welcome to stay for the first 30 minutes of the workshop. If you are unable to attend the workshop, stop by the Learning Abroad Center in 230 Heller Hall to pick up the Gilman Scholarships Checklist which includes tips and special instructions for University of Minnesota students applying for the Gilman scholarship. Gilman Scholarship applications are due on Tuesday, March 3 for student studying in summer 2015 and fall/academic year 2015-16.

5.The Other Side of Domestic Violence
When we hear “domestic violence”, most of us are conditioned to think of intimate partner violence. However, what happens when the domestic violence is being committed by children toward their parents and siblings? The results of a study exploring this topic will be presented in a discussion, The Other Side of Domestic Violence: A Community Discussion of Parent- and – sibling Directed Aggression Among Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence, with researchers from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota (Canan Karatekin and Michelle Brown). Topics will include: the nature of children’s aggression and mothers’ responses, health problems faced by the mothers and children, the paradox of children being both victimizers and victims, and ways in which advocates, professionals, and concerned community members can help. Please join us Friday March 13th as we seek to understand how we can support mothers facing domestic violence from both sides. This discussion will be held at the Harriet Tubman Center (3111 First Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55408).

6.Prof. Diana Mutz Talk: The Social Psychology of Trade Attitudes on 2/27

The Political Psychology Proseminar is pleased to announce that Prof. Diana Mutz will be giving a talk on Friday February 27th from 1 to 3pm in Social Sciences 1450. Prof. Diana Mutz is the Samuel A. Stouffer Professor of Political Science and Communication at the University of Pennsylvania and will be giving a talk titled "The Social Psychology of Trade Attitudes." Diana C. Mutz, teaches and does research on public opinion, political psychology and mass political behavior, with a particular emphasis on political communication. At Penn she holds the Samuel A. Stouffer Chair in Political Science and Communication, and also serves as Director of the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics at the Annenberg Public Policy Center. In 2011, she received the Lifetime Career Achievement Award in Political Communication from the American Political Science Association. She was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008. Mutz has published articles in a variety of academic journals including American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Public Opinion Quarterly, Journal of Politics and Journal of Communication. In 2006, she published Hearing the Other Side: Deliberative Versus Participatory Democracy (Cambridge University Press) which was awarded the 2007 Goldsmith Prize by Harvard University and the Robert Lane Prize for the Best Book in Political Psychology by the American Political Science Association. Mutz served as past editor of Political Behavior, and served as founding co-PI of Time-sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS), an interdisciplinary infrastructure project that promotes methodological innovation across the social sciences. One of her most recent books, Population-based Survey Experiments (Princeton University Press, 2011) provides the first book-length treatment of this new method drawing examples from across the social sciences.

8.Volunteer Needed for Prospective Brain Injury Study at VAMC

9.DVBIC Research Intern

We are currently looking for one or more interns to assist with our research projects at the Minneapolis VA. The research intern will assist research staff at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC). Responsibilities will include: preparing study materials, scoring clinical scales, working with testing software, verifying accuracy of study data, conducting computer-based cognitive testing, and assessing participants. This position will also involve working with relational databases and basic computer programming. The research falls under the direction of Dr. Kelvin Lim, UMN faculty. The patient population will include military personnel or veterans with traumatic brain injury and other mental health issues. Qualified candidate must be highly motivated, able to work independently, extremely detail-oriented, and willing to develop new skills as the need arises. Excellent communication (written and oral), organizational and interpersonal skills, and strong computer skills are also required. Candidates should be comfortable using basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and web applications, and have some background with statistical software and relational databases. All candidates must be pursuing a degree in psychology or related field. A minimum commitment of 8-10 hours a week for 12 months is required. If you’re planning to study abroad during May, Summer or Fall 2015, the scholarship applications deadlines are coming up! Both the Learning Abroad Center's Study Abroad Scholarship and Diversity Scholarship are both due on: Wednesday, March 4, 2015 for students studying May and summer session 2015, and Wednesday, April 14, 2015 for students studying fall 2015 or academic year 2015-16. These scholarships can be applied to any credit-bearing programs that appear in the Learning Abroad Center program search. On average 1 in every 3 applicants is awarded a scholarship. Awards are based entirely on the quality of the application essay, so follow the prompt carefully. If there is a class you are struggling in, or if you are looking to study and practice in an informal, social, and productive environment, then Peer-assisted learning (PAL) sessions might be perfect for you! PAL Sessions are led by a trained, experienced undergrad facilitator who has taken the course and earned high marks. The sessions are an efficient way to study, and meet and work with classmates. The sessions cover weekly practice with course concepts and extra problem-solving. They are free, there is no need to register, just show up.
