1.PSYCH ADVISING OFFICE CLOSURE & WALK-IN HOUR CHANGE THURSDAY 3/1
Psychology Undergraduate Advising will be closed from 12:00pm - 1:30pm on Thursday, March 1st. Casey's walk-in hours, which are typically held during this time, will be canceled. They will resume as regularly schedule next week. If any questions arise during this time, please email our office at psyadvis@umn.edu, and we will respond upon our return. 2.CALLING FOR STORIES RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH!
Has your life, or the life of someone close to you been affected by mental health issues? Millions of people are affected by mental health issues ranging from stress to depression, eating disorders, and suicide. To promote awareness about the sometimes profound impact that suffering from, living with, and recovering from mental health issues have on college students, a coalition of student groups on campus are planning a Mental Health Awareness Day on campus. As part of this awareness event, we're asking U of M students, their friends, and families to help make this day as powerful as possible by donating personal stories that we can incorporate into our display. These stories may describe your own experience with mental health, illness, or suicide, or how a loved one's experience affected you, positively and negatively. 3. PSI CHI MEETING WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7 IN N639 ELLIOTT
The next Psi Chi and Psychology Club meeting will be on Wednesday, March 7th, from 3:00 -4:00pm in N639 Elliott. We will be having a panel of professors from a few different areas of psychology who will discuss the work they have done as well as answer questions. This panel includes Pat Frazier from Counseling, Nathan Kuncel from Industrial/Organizational, Matt Burns from School Psychology, and Scott Woitaszewski from the School Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. This is a great opportunity to learn about some of different areas in psychology. In addition to meetings this semester, we will be having a bake sale and we will be attending Relay for Life. You do not have to be a member of Psi Chi to attend-- all are welcome! 4.VOLUNTEER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY-START SPRING, CONTINUE SUMMER & FALL
Professor Colin DeYoung's research team is seeking a volunteer undergraduate research assistant (UGRA) to begin this spring, with the option of continuing into the summer and next fall. The UGRA will be involved with research projects in the area of Personality Psychology. Duties and activities may include but are not limited to: recruiting participants, running participants in research studies, data management and analysis, active participation in lab meetings (if desired). UGRAs are expected to commit to an average of 9 hours of work per week, attend research team meetings, work independently on assigned tasks, and take initiative in communicating with research team members. While research assistants will be working this spring on a volunteer-only basis, they are free to register for 3 credits of PSY 5993 Directed Research in the summer and fall semesters. Eligible candidates are motivated undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, with at least a 3.0 GPA, and some experience taking psychology, child psychology, or neuroscience classes. 5.PAID SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY
An opportunity is available for undergraduates through National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). A study involving the Departments of Applied Economics, Entomology, and Psychology at the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is working with private oak woodlands owners in Minnesota as potential volunteers to detect the first appearance of several high priority invasive insect pests. Possible REU projects include estimating the time cost of managing a volunteer network for a government agency or the time cost of the volunteers, exploring how community networks affect volunteerism rates, extracting additional data from our experimental interventions to relate to volunteerism, or estimating the quality of volunteer effort from the collected samples. Full descriptions of these possibilities are provided on the Department of Entomology's website (under "Summer Opportunities" on right side). To be eligible for REU, you must be a US citizen and enrolled as an undergraduate at a US College or University. Application materials include: resume; course transcript (unofficial transcript is ok); list of three academic or work references (with telephone numbers and email addresses); short essay (800 words maximum) explaining interest in this REU, abilities to contribute to the project, and pertinent research experience. Send as a single electronic file to Tomisin Olayiwola at olayi001@umn.edu. Application deadline is March 2, 2012 and notification of award is March 20, 2012. Selection criteria includes strength of academic record, fit of interests to the project, past experience, and skills such as independence, reliability, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication. Selected students receive a $4800 stipend.

The Major Mentor Program matches undecided students on campus with a mentor in a potential major of interest. Through this experience, Major Mentors use their first-hand knowledge to inform and guide their Mentees. Major Mentors are students who have completed a significant amount of upper-division coursework in their major and have been identified as excellent peer resources in their area of study. The Pay It Forward Tour is a 9-day (March 9th - 17th) community service trip sponsored by Students Today Leaders Forever in which students travel across the country serving others by helping out at nursing homes, working at food shelves, cleaning up city parks, and so much more! 13.INTERESTED IN MENTAL HEALTH? NEW MASTERS FOR COMBINED LCPP & LADC
The University of Minnesota is launching a new Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH)! The high prevalence of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders virtually guarantees that counselors, no matter the treatment setting, will encounter clients struggling with not one but two or more disorders. IBH prepares counselors for this clinical reality. The IBH merges mental health and substance abuse education and training into a single, comprehensive and cohesive program. This synthesis represents an important and pioneering shift in the preparation of clinicians. The IBH is designed to fulfill education and training requirements for two licenses: the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC). The MS in Health Services Research, Policy & Administration (MS-HSRPA) program in the Health Policy & Management in the School of Public Health invite you to attend an information session about this unique program which can be a great fit for Psychology undergrads. This MS prepares you for careers translating health-related data into organizational intelligence that improves individual health, population health, and organizational performance. Health care organizations such as Allina use information to help clinicians improve care by providing tools to measure patient outcomes and alert providers to patient needs. Organizations such as Target are using information to improve health and wellness programs for their employees. Translating huge amounts of raw data into organizational intelligence requires analysts who are skilled in analyzing data to address organizational questions such as what works for whom, when, where, and why? This career opportunity is a growing area and it will be difficult to outsource because it requires being a liaison between users and informatics - helping users frame and answer their questions using their organization's data. The MS-HSRPA program will provide you analytical skills that can be applied in numerous settings--program evaluation, systems and industrial engineering, analytic health care management, health policy analysis, and more! And, the MS-HSRPA program works with local employers to develop internships that provide 2nd year students with a stipend, and the opportunity to develop your skills in real-world settings. This information session will cover the program, the curriculum, the faculty, the sponsors, and internship opportunities. Individuals from Target, Allina Hospitals & Clinics, and individuals active in state health policy will describe the work and careers that MS-HSRPA can be expected to be engaged in. ID 3960: Global Leadership for Social Change--A Cedar Riverside Immersion is a 3-credit May session course that parallels the immersion experience of study abroad. You will be learning and working in the Cedar Riverside community and examining questions of leadership, power, cultural diversity and social change. The course involves an exciting blend of community engagement, neighborhood excursions, readings, and lively discussions. In the community, we learn from organizers, social justice activists, businesses leaders, elected officials, and community residents. The course includes a weekend residential component, a neighborhood theater performance and meals at local restaurants. Application deadline is March 2, 2012. Scholarships Available for eligible students. No pre-requisites. This amazing opportunity can be pulled into your Psychology major as PSY 3996 credits (part of PSY electives) if you have not yet capped out on these special options. 9.FT RESEARCH ASST AT JUDGE BAKER CHILDREN'S CENTER, HARVARD MED SCHOOL
Judge Baker Children's Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA is currently seeking full-time research assistants for an effectiveness trial of CBT for depression and anxiety (including post-traumatic stress), and behavioral parent training for conduct problems. The position will be under the direction of John R. Weisz, PhD, ABPP and colleagues. Responsibilities may include: subject recruitment, diagnostic interviewing, survey administration, data entry and filing, literature searches, formatting manuscripts/grants, coding for meta-analyses, and other supporting activities. Opportunities for presenting research at conferences exist. Applicants must be willing to commit to the position for two years beginning June 2012 (start date negotiable). A successful applicant will have: a B.A. or B.S. in psychology or a related field by December 2011; an interest in applying for a graduate degree in psychology; strong organizational and leadership skills; experience in a psychology research lab; experience working with children and adolescents; and superior academic qualifications (i.e. GPA ≥ 3.5). Applicants should send: a resume (including overall GPA); a cover letter detailing relevant experiences, interests, and goals; 2 letters of recommendation; and GRE scores (if applicable) to Andrew Potter via email: apotter@jbcc.harvard.edu. Learn from U of M faculty and staff experts about prestigious scholarships for graduate study in the United Kingdom and Ireland (Rhodes, Marshall, Churchill, Gates Cambridge, Mitchell). Applicants must have exceptionally strong academic records; a GPA of 3.8 or higher is generally expected. Some of the scholarships require U.S. citizenship, and may have additional eligibility requirements. Institutional endorsement is required; students who are interested in being endorsed by the University for a scholarship to begin graduate study in Fall 2013 must submit a preliminary application for campus review by April 2, 2012. An instruction sheet explaining the campus endorsement process and how to apply will be available at the info session, and thereafter from the University Honors Program office, 20 Nicholson Hall. 11.TILLMAN MILITARY SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships provide financial support for undergraduate and graduate students who are veterans or active duty military service members in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and for spouses or surviving spouses of veterans and active service members. The amount of the award is determined case-by-case on the basis of need. Recipients are expected to participate in Pat Tillman Foundation-sponsored community service and leadership activities. Additional selection criteria include strong educational and career ambitions, community service, leadership potential, excellent application essays. 60 Scholars will be selected nationwide. The Peer Research Consultants provide one-on-one assistance to students with the goal of helping them develop research strategies needed for an excellent research paper. They can give students an overview of using the libraries for research, formulating a paper topic and search, helping students to find scholarly articles, books, and more. PRCs are upper-level undergraduates who have gone through 10+ hours of training on using the libraries and helping students to do the same. They hold drop-in hours in Wilson, Walter, and MCAE in Appleby Hall, or students can make an appointment. In addition, there are new weekend hours at Wilson Library this semester! The Building Peace project is looking for undergraduate research assistants to work with a professor in Communication Studies trained in Social Psychology. For this project, RAs will work searching academic and policy literature, writing drafts, and searching for websites and organizations working for peace in places of ethnic and religious conflict. The lab is looking for motivated and reliable students who can commit to 6-9 hours per week (for which you can register for COMM 3970). Previous research experience preferred, but not required. This scholarship was created to honor Alfred I. Johnson who was a Regent of the University and Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. The selected students commit to completing an off-campus public service internship. This scholarship provides students who possess a demonstrated interest in public affairs a stipend for their internships. Applicants must show evidence of a strong interest in public affairs, with an intention to pursue a career or vocational activities in public affairs, including any kind of community volunteer activity, organizing to affect public policy, service on government advisory committees, and service in elective offices. Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development's annual Summer Internship Program. Under the direction of Drs. Lisa Feigenson and Justin Halberda, the lab is currently investigating a range of issues including memory development, numerical abilities, logical reasoning, and language acquisition in populations including young infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and adults. Summer interns participate fully in all aspects of research, including recruiting participants, testing infants and children in behavioral tasks, coding children's testing sessions, analyzing data, and interpreting results. Interns also participate in guided readings of developmental literature and attend laboratory meetings in which we discuss ongoing projects or current issues in the field of cognitive development. Summer interns have daily contact with children and their parents, and as such must be mature, articulate, and comfortable communicating with others. Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for the research being conducted, a strong work ethic, and an excellent academic record. Desirable background experience includes coursework in developmental and experimental psychology, basic computer skills, an ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment, and some previous research experience. The 2012 Program runs May 29 - July 31 and will be full-time (roughly 9am - 5pm). Interns will receive either course credit or a stipend (range: $1000 - $1500). 8.BECOME A 2012 MCAE MULTICULTURAL KICKOFF AMBASSADOR!
The Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE) hosts a two-day Multicultural Kickoff (MKO), which helps incoming first-year students make a successful transition to college by building community and identifying academic and cultural supports on campus. This year, the Multicultural Kickoff begins Tuesday, August 28 and concludes Wednesday, August 29 before Welcome Week begins. MCAE is looking for outgoing and enthusiastic current students to serve as MKO Ambassadors during the event. Ambassadors will work in pairs to lead a small group of freshman throughout the event. Ambassadors should be knowledgeable about on-campus resources for multicultural students and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Upon completion of the MKO Ambassador program, students will receive a $200.00 stipend. Students are expected to attend an April information session, training sessions on Friday, August 24th and Monday, August 27th (including move-in), and must be present for the entire Multicultural Kickoff on Tuesday, August 28th and Wednesday, August 29th, 2012. The client has a mental health advocate position opening, responsible for (but are not limited to): registers participants in the advocacy system and opens case files; screens participants and provider requests for services; educates participants with respect to parameters of services and benefits design including claim process; assists and supports care managers in the handling of crisis calls; provides follow-up calls to participants to assess level of service satisfaction; completes service tracking and initiates the Concern, Compliant, Grievance (CCG) process; participates in clinical/intake staff meeting and in-service seminars. Qualifications for this position include: Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in mental health/social sciences field; experience in mental health, social or human services, insurance and/or customer service setting; must demonstrate warmth and empathy with client; strong conflict-resolution skills - must be able to work positively with irate callers or those who are in a crisis; flexible and creative problem-solver - every call is different so candidate must be able to be comfortable "thinking on their feet"; must be comfortable working in fast-paced, deadline-driven business environment; strong receptiveness to feedback from supervisor and mentor; team work oriented coupled with good judgment in making decisions. The client puts strong emphasis on internal career development, including advancement and career switches. Salary is between $32,000 and $37,000, and offers tuition reimbursement for Master's degree in Psychology. 1. SPRING 2012 WALK-IN HOURS FOR PSYCHOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated walk-in hours. While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds walk-in hours once a week and cannot address walk-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified walk-in times. Due to high student demand, we will have an advisor available for 5 - 10 minute issues from 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 9:30 - 4:30 on Wednesday for the first two weeks of the term. Our normal walk-in hours will take effect after Monday, January 30th. 2.NEW UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH MINOR!
The new Public Health Minor is a collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Health. This minor is ideal for undergraduate students interested in Public Health issues which can be explored through courses spanning the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Health curriculum spectrum. This innovative minor--offering a broad training in approaches to and understandings of public health--is designed to give students a foundation in the language, concepts, and methods used when addressing population-level health challenges. The minor can serve as a foundation for further study in public health, in other health professions, or in any field in which the health of persons and populations is a relevant concern. Public Health Minor courses also contribute to a comprehensive liberal arts education. The new Public Health Minor is being administered through the advising offices of both the Department of Sociology and the Department of Geography. 3.FIRST PSI CHI MEETING WEDNESDAY 1/25, 3 - 4PM IN N639 ELLIOTT HALL
Psi Chi and the Psychology Club will be holding our first meeting of the new semester on Wednesday, January 25th from 3pm-4pm in N639 Elliott. This will be our new meeting time for this Spring semester. Meetings are biweekly, and throughout the semester we will have speakers and discussions about many different topics within psychology including: research, graduate school, GRE, etc. You do not have to be a member of Psi Chi to attend! 7.RESEARCH ASSISTANTS WANTED FOR NEW SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES
Our research team is looking for dedicated research assistants who are interested in conducting research in evolutionary and social psychology for Spring 2012. Duties include participating in weekly lab meetings, providing input into study design, recruiting participants, and running experimental sessions. Preference may be given to undergraduates who can commit 2 semesters to our lab. Getting involved with our lab will be a beneficial opportunity for anyone interested in gaining research experience and knowledge in the areas of consumer behavior, food selection, and decision-making. The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). Up to two awards of $500 will be offered Spring 2012. A third candidate will be selected to receive the newly established Natalis Award of $600. The Spring 2012 application deadline is Feb. 1, 2012. 12.KATHERINE E. SULLIVAN SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDY ABROAD, 2012-13
This scholarship provides the opportunity for seniors at any campus of the University of Minnesota to enrich their academic experience with a fifth year of undergraduate study in another country. The scholarship is intended to support credit-bearing and usually classroom-based study abroad that immerses the student in the host university, research institute, or other institution, as well as in the host culture. Proposals should be for full-time study for a full academic year or equivalent. Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates at any University of Minnesota campus; must have senior status (at least 90 credits completed) by the end of Fall semester 2011 with at least 30 credits in residence at a University of Minnesota campus; must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; and should have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Applicants must be available for an in-person interview on the Twin Cities campus on March 2, 2012.
