The Community Service-Learning Center is currently seeking a Peer Advisor to join their team! Peer Advisors in the CSLC advise students in the Community Engagement Scholars Program, facilitate training and reflection sessions, advise students seeking volunteer opportunities, and support service-learning courses. This is a great position for students looking to expand their experience with and knowledge of non-profit organizations in the Twin Cities. Students in these positions also gain extensive skills in advising their peers, leading reflection and training sessions, and program development. Dependable Home Health Care is seeking several Direct Care Counselors to join the teams at group homes in Northern Ramsey County, and Andover/Coon Rapids. The Direct Care Counselor will work directly with persons served in the implementation of the written Individual Support Plans, documenting progress and response to program services, and ensuring the safety and well-being of each person. This individual generally works without direct immediate supervision in the performance of assigned tasks. Individual would only be expected to work about 1 weekend per month. The Undergraduate Journal of Psychology at Berkeley (UJPB) is an annual publication that provides a critical forum for publication to a diverse and multidisciplinary undergraduate community. It features original research and review articles and provides a venue for original works that focus on psychology, neuroscience, and other cognitive sciences. The journal also has a focus on education and training scholarship, thereby promoting excellence in and encouraging further undergraduate research in psychology. If you have completed a "Stepping Stone Article", "Research Article" and/or "Review Article" in a psychology-related field, we'd like to invite you to submit your paper for review in the Undergraduate Journal of Psychology at Berkeley! Before you submit an article, please check our website at http://ujpb.weebly.com/submit.html for guidelines and expectations for different kinds of manuscripts. To submit an original research article and/or other work for review and publication, you can send an e-mail to berkpsychjournal@gmail.com with your article (in .doc or .docx format) attached. I wanted to write to let you know that this will be the final Scoop sent from me, Janessa, as my last day in Psychology Undergraduate Advising will be this Friday, July 5th. (Don't worry--the Scoop will still be making its way to your inbox! Just not from me.) I have thoroughly enjoyed the past three years spent in this role, especially getting to know the many students who have entered my office, whether through email or meetings. I have been inspired by a number of you, and I will be embarking on a new adventure in graduate school this summer as part of the Master of Education in secondary English education program here at UMN-TC.

2.LS 5950: Lifestyle and Health
1 credit - Class will meet on two Wednesdays (7/10 & 7/13 from 6 - 8:30pm), with a paper due 3 to 4 weeks later. Millions of dollars are spent each year, searching for the newest medical interventions to aid the ailing public. Ironically, from a "big picture" perspective, access to medical care is actually a minor contributor to health. The number one factor in promoting health and reducing the risk for premature death is one's lifestyle. Lifestyle (diet, exercise, stress reduction, drug/alcohol/tobacco use, etc.) factors play a larger role in health than genetics, environment, socioeconomics or access to medical care. Physicians receive minimal training in methods of effectively altering patients' Lifestyle choices, and many of them spend their time painstakingly documenting the inevitable downward course of lifestyle-created disease. Although much attention is paid to this issue, with many individuals attending health clubs, trying various diets, etc., the vast majority of these attempts fail. This class is focused on identifying successful and sustainable methods of lifestyle change that can be used by anyone to improve their physical health and mental health. 3.LS 5950: Creating Policies and Procedures for the Next Decade
1 credit - Class will meet for one day (7/20 9am - 3pm) with a paper due 3 to 4 weeks later. Who needs policies and procedures? Whether written, oral, or imbedded in the culture, all organizations have policies and procedures by which they operate. The most effective policies are created to meet a need that has been well-analyzed. They are practical, logical and legal. They benefit from stakeholder input and research into alternatives and what has gone before. Perhaps most importantly there is a concrete plan for implementation and revision. This course culminates with a research and writing project that uses all the tools discussed to create policy and procedure for a real or hypothetical organization. 6.Part-Time Strengths & Engagement Coaches Needed!
The Office for Student Engagement is hiring students as Strengths & Engagement Coaches (S&E Coaches)! S&E Coaches will be paid $500 stipend/semester for approximately 60-70 hours of work/semester. S&E Coaches will: Provide individualized strengths and engagement coaching to students; facilitate workshops to student groups; provide feedback and ideas to the Office for Student Engagement and the Strengths Advisory Team; staff outreach events, such as: Exam Jam, U of M Job Fair, Involvement Fest; and assist with promotion of strengths and engagement through providing ideas and content for the twitter pages, website, facebook page, and blogThere are two strengths trainings you will need to attend if selected as a coach, these trainings are taking place on July 30th and August 5th. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has recently posted a position for an Undergraduate Student Personnel Coordinator. The person in this position serves as the unit's first point-of-contact for 1000+ pre-majors and journalism majors concerning policies, procedures, and communications and provides valued operational support to the program. This person is part of a dedicated student services team and works with SJMC's dynamic faculty and staff. This position may be of interest to recent graduates who have worked in a student services office and are interested in gaining professional student services experience. Provide leadership in coordinating and executing the recruitment and matriculation plan for Inter-College (ICT), Intra-University (IUT), and New Advanced Standing (NAS) transfer students to the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). Coordinate focused outreach and follow-up activities to attract and recruit high achieving students and students from under-represented populations. 9.Kenwood Therapy Center Seeking Volunteer Intake Support
Kenwood Therapy Center is a highly regarded, innovative, 12-therapist, multidisciplinary clinic and training center in Minneapolis, MN. We are currently offering a volunteer opportunity for individuals to do confidential phone intakes and referrals, insurance benefit checks, and scheduling. This is a chance to speak to real people about real problems, and will provide context to further positions and graduate work. Experience, comfort, compassion, maturity, good judgment, and interest in working with clients with emotional, relational, sexual, and other serious life issues is important. This position provides the opportunity for immersion in the daily life of the clinic, as well as research and evaluation, so additional supportive tasks will be assigned as needed. Ideal for upperclassman student or individuals contemplating going on to graduate school in Psychology, Sociology, Family Therapy, or other mental health fields; or someone interested in general work in a mental health and family therapy clinic. At this dynamic, innovative center, opportunities for your role to evolve are abundant. Past volunteers have eventually assisted with group therapy sessions, taken session notes for therapists, and some have continued on to be hired for a paid position here at the Kenwood Center. Students and volunteers will be given opportunities for on-going training and supervision with experienced staff and therapists. We are looking for applicants that are able to commit for at least 1 year. Hours requested are Saturday, either 9am-1pm or 11am-3pm; and one additional weekday evening, from 3-7pm. 1 credit - Class will meet for one day (7/20 9am - 3pm) with a paper due 3 to 4 weeks later. Who needs policies and procedures? Whether written, oral, or imbedded in the culture, all organizations have policies and procedures by which they operate. The most effective policies are created to meet a need that has been well-analyzed. They are practical, logical and legal. They benefit from stakeholder input and research into alternatives and what has gone before. Perhaps most importantly there is a concrete plan for implementation and revision. This course culminates with a research and writing project that uses all the tools discussed to create policy and procedure for a real or hypothetical organization. Kenwood Therapy Center is a highly regarded, innovative, 12-therapist, multidisciplinary clinic and training center in Minneapolis, MN. We are currently offering a volunteer opportunity for individuals to do confidential phone intakes and referrals, insurance benefit checks, and scheduling. This is a chance to speak to real people about real problems, and will provide context to further positions and graduate work. Experience, comfort, compassion, maturity, good judgment, and interest in working with clients with emotional, relational, sexual, and other serious life issues is important. This position provides the opportunity for immersion in the daily life of the clinic, as well as research and evaluation, so additional supportive tasks will be assigned as needed. Ideal for upperclassman student or individuals contemplating going on to graduate school in Psychology, Sociology, Family Therapy, or other mental health fields; or someone interested in general work in a mental health and family therapy clinic. At this dynamic, innovative center, opportunities for your role to evolve are abundant. Past volunteers have eventually assisted with group therapy sessions, taken session notes for therapists, and some have continued on to be hired for a paid position here at the Kenwood Center. Tubman focuses on providing social just through information and offers safe shelter, legal services, mental and chemical health counseling, elder care resources, youth programming, and community education to the Minneapolis community. Tubman is seeking Peace Camp Youth Advocates who are responsible for identifying and responding to the individual needs of children and youth residing in Tubman's domestic violence shelters. This includes implementation of activities and fieldtrips, providing child care, completing intakes with mothers, and other projects as needed. This intern position is 20 hours per week throughout summer, with an 18 hour training beginning May 18th. Interested in education, teaching, youth advocacy, or counseling? This is an excellent opportunity for recent or upcoming grads to work with the TRiO Upward Bound program! These positions will serve as Academic Advisors to program participants at Roosevelt or Edison High School in Minneapolis. The position's primary responsibility is delivering program services to the students including conducting weekly academic groups in which program curriculum is delivered and weekly individual meetings with participants to review academic progress and set short term academic goals; assisting program seniors with college and financial aid applications; monitoring attendance and academic performance; and maintaining student files including records of grades, attendance, credits earned/attempted, and academic test scores (MCAII, etc.).
