1.Spring 2015 PSY 4993/5993 Research Contracts Must be Turned In By Monday
Students participating in a PSY 4993/5993 experience during Spring 2015 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract before the drop-add deadline at the end of the day on Monday, February 2nd. Students participating in CPSY 4994 experiences that would like to receive credit towards their Psychology Major, must also have a Psychology Undergraduate Research Contract signed before the end of the day Monday. Contracts after this date will require college approval in order to receive credit for your work in the lab for Spring 2015. Are you participating in an internship here or abroad this spring? Or engaging in a learning opportunity that takes you outside of the classroom for a unique experience? The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). Up to two awards of $500 will be offered Spring 2015. A third candidate will be selected to receive the named Natalis Award of $600. The Spring 2015 application deadline is February 2, 2014. 10.Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Grants AvailableThe Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. 14.Summer Research Opportunity
The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. From offering suggestions for developing protocols to running sessions with children and families, research assistants are afforded every opportunity to pursue their own interests and apply their own skills within our lab. As a Carlson Lab RA, you will interact with some of the leading scientists in the field of child development,. You will also have the chance to contribute to presentations of our research at international conferences and be included in future publications. This is the perfect opportunity to develop important research skills and relationships while learning about children's social cognitive development. Schedules are highly flexible. 18.Psychology Judges Needed
The State Science & Engineering Fair is looking for University Psychology students to judge Psychology Projects. Judges talk with students about their projects, provide feedback on their research methods, and score student projects. The students presenting projects are in grades 6-12, but undergraduate students are only allowed to judge the projects in grades 6-8. Judges have to be upper division (i.e. juniors or seniors), have done advanced coursework, and have 2+ years of research experience. If you are interested in volunteering, but don't meet the judging requirements, we'd love to have you in other areas! We need general volunteers to help with student project check-in, data entry, and other help in the back office. The competition takes place the weekend of March 20-22 in Bloomington and we need judges on all three days (but judges only have to sign up for one day). Personal Care Assistants (PCA) work with young children and adolescents with physical or behavioral needs. Each experience is as unique as the client with whom you are placed and it is a great chance to gain hands on experience in a one-on one environment. We pride ourselves with the ability to offer students a schedule flexible to your classes. Examples of career-related experience per area of study: Physical & Occupational Therapy: Participate in ADLs, ROM, social interaction and sensory issues; Pre-med/Nursing: Education about the medical diagnosis and “patient” interaction; Psychology/Social Work: Social/community integration and exposure to a family unit with a child that has a disability or an elderly person in need of daily living assistance. We not only provide students with hands-on paid work experience, but also help them explore their career interests and develop career skills. Our students are supervised by nurses and are required to set and reach career related goals while they are with us. All majors welcome to apply. We generally work with students involved in the helping professions such as health care, education, psychology, sociology, etc. The time commitment is at least 12-15 hours per week and a minimum commitment of two semesters (summer counts). Dr. Badgaiyan recently joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota and is directing the CMRR's program in PET imaging. 5.Research Lab in Psychology
A laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System is conducting treatment outcome research to examine how individuals with schizophrenia change as a result of participating in computer-based skills training. There is an opportunity for 2 undergraduate students to become involved with this project as a Research Lab in Psychology experience. The students will learn about the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, with emphasis on symptom severity, social functioning, cognition, and rehabilitation. Student will work as a part of a research team lead by a psychologist and will be involved primarily with scoring measures and entering data. As part of the research experience, students will attend a weekly lab meeting in which topics related to the project are discussed. In addition, students will write an APA-style paper on a related topic. All research activities are conducted at the VA Health Care System. Students must be able to commute to the VA. Student will be asked to register for research credit and to commit an average of 9 hours each week between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. 6.Developmental Psychopathology Research (Cicchetti Lab)
Researchers at the Institute of Child Development are currently seeking motivated undergraduate students who are interested in participating in developmental psychopathology research. Our project may be of particular interest for those pursuing research experiences in clinical or developmental psychology, with emphasis on caregiver-child relations, social-emotion and language development. Students who are native English speakers and can commit to 6 to 10 hours a week with a minimum of a 2 semester commitment are preferred. Lab duties include transcribing videos, coding linguistic and affective data, and data entry. Opportunities to be involved in professional presentations may be offered pending on the commitment of the student. Our project is flexible to the schedule of interested undergraduate. 8.Multi-Day Workshop for Pre-Health Native American Students
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Native American Center for Health Professions (NACHP) and partners are offering a unique multi-day workshop for pre-health Native American students who are planning to apply to medical school within the next two years. During this workshop students will learn application tips, meet faculty and staff, and learn more about research, funding, and career advancement opportunities available to Native students. Workshop will be held on March 27-28, 2015 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Applications can be found online. 9.Psychology & Research in Madrid this Summer
The Learning Abroad Center, together with the Department of Psychology and the Fundacion Ortega-Marañon in Madrid, will be launching a new study abroad program in Madrid, Spain this summer. On this program, students will earn 6 credits of PSY Credit in just 6 weeks! Students will take Psy 3061 (taught by Professor Jonathan Gewirtz, Department of Psychology UMN-TC) and work in one of 2 world-famous research labs in Madrid, earning 3 credits of Psy 5993. Students on the program will have the choice of living in local dormitories or with a Spanish host family. In addition to spending 6 weeks in Madrid, students will also take a study trip to Toledo, Spain. This program is a great opportunity for students to gain an international perspective on psychology, specifically in the brain science area, and to work on psychological research while abroad! 2.Spring 2015 Drop-In Hours for
Psychology Undergraduate Advising
Psychology
Undergraduate Advising has designated drop-in hours during the academic year.
However, due to the high student demand the first two weeks of the term, we
will have an advisor available from on drop-ins from 8:00am– 4:30pm
Monday-Friday for the first two weeks of the term. Drop-ins are a great time to
have research contracts signed, and ask 5–10 minute questions; longer issues
will be referred to schedule an appointment. Our normal drop-in hours
will take effect Monday, January 26th. This semester’s drop-in hours for
the Psychology Advisors can be found on our website. While other
units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds
drop-in hours once a week and cannot address walk-in issues outside of these.
While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research
contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering
our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best,
it is important that we recognize and respect these specified drop-in times.

The
Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota is pleased to announce
its inaugural Diversity Weekend
scheduled for April 8-10, 2015, on the Minneapolis campus. Diversity Weekend is
designed for individuals who are historically under-represented in psychology
graduate programs and who are interested in learning about graduate training in
the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. This program will
feature a coordinated set of formal and informal experiences designed to
familiarize participants with strategies for constructing successful

A laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System is conducting treatment outcome research to examine how individuals with schizophrenia change as a result of participating in computer-based skills training. There is an opportunity for 2 undergraduate students to become involved with this project as a Research Lab in Psychology experience. The students will learn about the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, with emphasis on symptom severity, social functioning, cognition, and rehabilitation. Student will work as a part of a research team lead by a psychologist and will be involved primarily with scoring measures and entering data. As part of the research experience, students will attend a weekly lab meeting in which topics related to the project are discussed. In addition, students will write an APA-style paper on a related topic. All research activities are conducted at the VA Health Care System. Students must be able to commute to the VA. Student will be asked to register for research credit and to commit an average of 9 hours each week between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Researchers at the Institute of Child Development are currently seeking motivated undergraduate students who are interested in participating in developmental psychopathology research. Our project may be of particular interest for those pursuing research experiences in clinical or developmental psychology, with emphasis on caregiver-child relations, social-emotion and language development. Students who are native English speakers and can commit to 6 to 10 hours a week with a minimum of a 2 semester commitment are preferred. Students will take Psy 3061 (taught by Professor Jonathan Gewirtz, Department of Psychology UMN-TC) and work in one of 2 world-famous research labs in Madrid, earning 3 credits of Psy 5993. University of Minnesota's Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement
Program is now accepting applications for summer 2015. The priority application
deadline is January 26, 2015. The goal of McNair Scholars is to give
undergraduate students intensive, faculty-driven research experiences and
prepare students for entry into graduate school. During the the 10-week summer
research program students: Develop a great relationship with a professor that
is essential for applying to graduate school; Receive a $3,500 stipend; Conduct
research with a professor; Develop a quality research paper; Receive guidance
through the graduate school process (e.g. identify graduate programs, write a

Undergraduate
and pre-doctoral level students who are interested in conducting mental health
research in Mexico during the summer of 2015, and who meet the application

The paths
young people take as they move through adolescence and make the transition to
adulthood have become longer and more variable in recent decades. These
pathways are linked to broad social forces. This course will examine the
consequences of recent societal trends for the process of becoming an adult. It
will consider demographic trends and patterns of inequality, changes in the labor
force, technological advances, the linkages between school and work, and
changes in other major institutions, such as the criminal justice and health
care systems. We will examine how these societal trends influence young people
differently, depending on their social locations (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity,
and social class background). The course will also consider youth agency; how
young people envision their futures, make decisions and plans, and enact
behaviors in an attempt to achieve their goals in the contexts of changing
opportunities and constraints. Youth preparation for the future will be studied
in the realms of interpersonal competence, physical and mental health,
vocational development, and civic engagement. Finally, the course will consider
social policy and interventions designed to enhance both this phase of the life

Many research institutions across the nation have stipend summer research programs that invite students to work closely with faculty and graduate students on research projects over the summer. These programs are a great opportunity to see what it would be like to be a psychology graduate student in a research program. They provide first-hand experience in advanced research, intensive guidance, networking and preparation for grad school admissions process (crafting CV and personal statement, preparation for the GRE etc.). They also provide an unforgettable summer with various social activities/events planned. You will spend a lot of time with other students from different states and disciplines that are also passionate about their research. Programs like these are competitive, and the applications are due soon. Winter break would be a great time to explore some of the available opportunities and begin the applications. The sooner you start on the applications the better because you will likely be asked to provide 2-3 letters of recommendation and a personal statement. Please keep in mind that some of these programs have specific criteria, such as citizenship, academic standards, and/or are catered for under represented populations of students, so read the eligibility carefully.

The Center for Visual Science at the University of Rochester announces its 2015 Summer Research Fellowship Program in Vision Science. Undergraduates in their junior (3rd) year during the 2014-2015 academic year of baccalaureate studies interested in neuroscience, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and biomedical science are invited to join the Center for Visual Science for a summer of supervised laboratory training. Applicants will be selected based on academic achievements and an interest in pursuing graduate studies in science. Both US and foreign applications will be accepted. Our fellowship will cover travel and assist with on-campus housing expenses for non-local students and provide a stipend of $3,600 for a summer of continuous training in a faculty member's lab. The Conte Center for Computational Neuropsychiatric Genomics is offering an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program this summer. In addition, the Genes & Addiction NIDA Center for GWAS in Outbred Rats is offering an REHU (Research Experiences for High School and Undergraduate Students) program this summer. Both Centers seek qualified students for 2015 fellowships. Stipends are $4,000 (undergrad) and $2,000 (high school) for ten-week projects. They will be awarded on a competitive basis based on academic excellence, motivation, scientific potential, compatibility of personal interests, and long-term career goals aligned with research programs associated with the Centers. Summer projects are located at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Harvard, University of Michigan, University of Tennessee, University of Buffalo, and Medical College of Wisconsin. If selected, REU and REHU students will be matched with research mentors. During the program participants will be invited to lab meetings and seminars. In addition, they will have access to libraries, athletic facilities, and University-sponsored events. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Emotion and Development Branch, Section on Bipolar Spectrum Disorders (BSD), in Bethesda, Maryland, seeks qualified individuals to fill IRTA (Intramural Research Training Award) positions, with employment starting late May/early June 2015. BSD conducts research on the pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention of mental illness, which begins in childhood. Our particular research interest involves the investigation of pediatric Bipolar Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The full-time positions require a bachelor's degree and a U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status (resident alien). A minimum commitment of one year is expected; however, a two-year commitment is preferred. Duties and responsibilities include assistance with and participation in all aspects of the research enterprise: patient and normal volunteer screening and recruitment; protocol implementation; data collection, entry, and analysis; and manuscript preparation. This work involves using computer statistical and graphics programs, preparing blood samples, and researching scientific literature. In addition, the position involves regular patient contact during outpatient clinic visits, and with inpatients. IRTAs can observe diagnostic interviews with patients and become familiar with standard psychometric procedures. IRTAs are also involved in training subjects to participate in neuroimaging and analyzing neuroimaging data. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Emotion and Development Branch, Section on Bipolar Spectrum Disorders (BSD), in Bethesda, Maryland, seeks qualified individuals to fill IRTA (Intramural Research Training Award) positions, with employment starting late May/early June 2015. BSD conducts research on the pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention of mental illness, which begins in childhood. Our particular research interest involves the investigation of pediatric Bipolar Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The full-time positions require a bachelor's degree and a U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status (resident alien). A minimum commitment of one year is expected; however, a two-year commitment is preferred. Duties and responsibilities include assistance with and participation in all aspects of the research enterprise: patient and normal volunteer screening and recruitment; protocol implementation; data collection, entry, and analysis; and manuscript preparation. This work involves using computer statistical and graphics programs, preparing blood samples, and researching scientific literature. In addition, the position involves regular patient contact during outpatient clinic visits, and with inpatients. IRTAs can observe diagnostic interviews with patients and become familiar with standard psychometric procedures. IRTAs are also involved in training subjects to participate in neuroimaging and analyzing neuroimaging data.
