Psychology Advising 1. Welcome Back! Psychology Undergraduate Advising would like to welcome you to campus for the start of Fall 2015! As you begin your first week of classes, keep our office's resources in mind. Some of you are returning from exciting summer experiences such as study abroad or internships or, for others, the less-exciting coursework and GREs. No matter what your summer involved, we can likely help you move forward! Advisors in our office are available for appointments year-round to assist with psychology course-selection and major progress, career and graduate school preparation and selection, and general engagement to make the most out of your time here. Fall 2015 Drop-in Advising Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated Drop-in Hours during the academic year. Due to high student demand the first 2 weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available on drop-ins from 8:30-4:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 9:45-4:30 on Thursday. Drop-in hours are a great time to get research contracts signed, and to ask 5-10 minute questions; longer issues will be referred to schedule a full appointment. Check the Psych Scoop each week for possible change in availability. 3. Meet CLA Career Counselor and Psychology Liasion, Laura Heilman! Psychology Undergraduate Advising is excited to announce our new partnership withCLA Career Services! Starting this fall, Career Counselor Laura Heilman will hold appointments in Elliott Hall to meet with Psychology students the about postgraduate planning, job search and exploration, internships, graduate school, and more. Laura completed her undergraduate degrees in psychology and communication from the University of Minnesota Duluth before working as a college access and success coach with the Twin-Cities-based nonprofit organization College Possible. During this experience Laura developed a passion for helping students navigate the career development process within higher education. She went on to earn her MA in leadership in student affairs from the University of St. Thomas where she gained experience in career services and academic advising at Augsburg College and in the dean of students office at Macalester College. Laura is committed to providing inclusive services to aid students by helping them recognize their strengths, explore meaningful options after college, articulate the value of their liberal arts degree, and empower them to achieve their goals. LGBTQIA Student Leadership Retreat Saturday, October 24th - Sunday, October 25th, 2015 Water Park of America Hotel, Bloomington Cost: FREE - Registration required  The GLBTA Programs Office is excited to present the University of Minnesota's 2nd Annual Student Retreat for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual and allied (LGBTQIA) undergraduate and graduate students. Our 2nd annual retreat will focus on leadership development and community building while exploring intersecting identifies and oppressions through a social justice lens. Research 8. Call for Undergraduate Research Papers Have you completed a research paper in a psychology-related field (i.e. psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, linguistics)? Are you looking for a platform to publish your work? If so, The Undergraduate Research Journal of Psychology at UCLA (URJP) WANTS YOU to submit your papers for our annual publication, expected to be released Spring 2016. URJP is an organization dedicated to informing the community of psychological findings through research run by undergraduates from all universities. URJP is one of the few established psychology journals that publish undergraduate psychological research in the country. The deadline to submit papers is October 31, 2015. More information regarding our submission criteria and types of articles accepted can be found on our website. UGRA needed for Political Psychology Lab The Political Psychology Lab is looking for one undergraduate research assistant to start work immediately, earning research credit for PSY 5993. The RA will be assisting with managing studies on all different stages, including literature review, creating surveys, collecting data, cleaning data, and data analysis. The RA will be involved in one or more of the studies examining libertarian ideology, moral dilemmas, definition of culture, and self-affirmation. The position runs during the Fall semester, with the opportunity to continue into the Spring. RAs will be expected to work approximately 9 hours per week (may vary across weeks). Strong candidates for this position will be conscientious, bright, motivated students interested in the research process. Preference will be given to students with previous research experience. ACR Hiring Program Counselor ACR Healthcare is currently in need of additional staffing for a direct care position titled "Program Counselor," which involves working with individuals that have physical/developmental disabilities. Some roles of a Program Counselor include escorting residents to appointments, which could be for an annual check-up, physical therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, and others. Other general roles of a PC include administering medications, providing care for daily activities, preparing meals, and also taking residents on community outings such as movies, concerts, parks, and anything else that interests them. Since there are over 50 houses within ACR, there are some homes that have more medical-based residential care, and others that are more behavioral. The position does require training before being permitted to work at any home, which covers first-aid, CPR, medication administration, how to handle behaviors, and other classes depending on the assigned home. Training can take up to two weeks, but the good news is that all training is paid! ACR Healthcare does require a minimum of 12 hours a week (around two shifts), and we prefer staff to commit for at least 6 months. The Program Counselor position pays $11.00/hr during weekdays, $12.75 if working an awake night. During weekends, you would make $12.81 for day and evening shifts, and $15.00 for awake nights. We also have an internship program for any employee planning to pursue nursing, pharmacy, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other health-based careers. We can also form new internships for any major or field of study, as long as the individual is an employee with ACR Healthcare. Roseville Family Seeking PCA Family looking for after school care help for their 14-year-old daughter with special needs. She is universally developmentally delayed with her biggest delay being speech. The job includes getting her off the bus, helping with snack, attending to personal care needs (e.g. toileting). She needs to be transported to speech therapy and back one afternoon a week. This is a M-F job, 3:00 to 5:30-6:00. It pays $12 per hour. Family is located in Roseville. Carlson Child Development Lab Seeking UGRAs  The Carlson Child Development Lab at the Institute of Child Development is seeking motivated undergraduate research assistants for a new project currently undergoing data collection. This position may be an especially good opportunity for those interested in educational, cognitive, or developmental psychology. The undergraduate research assistant would be directly involved in data collection with 3 and 4-year-old children at area preschools. Other responsibilities would include task scoring, parent recruitment and data entry. Students who can commit to 6 to 9 hours a week (2-3 credits) with a minimum of 2 semesters are preferred. One of the projects examines how parenting contributes to the development of self-control skills in preschoolers. The other project is examining how distancing strategies (e.g, role play) can be used to improve young children’s self-control skills. We are looking to hire multiple research assistants who can commit to 2 semesters starting fall semester and continuing through spring semester. Learning Abroad 8. Peace Corps: Live and Serve Abroad After Graduation!  Peace Corps sends U.S. citizens abroad to over 60 different countries to serve for 27 months. The 27 months includes intensive language, cultural, and technical skills training. Host countries determine what program areas they would like Volunteers working in. There are six main program areas in which Volunteers work: Education, Environment, Community Economic Development, Health, Youth in Development, and Agriculture. This fall's PSY 3960 course is an introduction to different career paths associated with an undergraduate degree in psychology (BA or BS). Students will gain an understanding of the major strengths and skills developed though study in psychology and how those strengths and skills can be applied in many different career settings. Emphasis will be placed both on careers that require further schooling (e.g., Ph.D, Master's) and careers that do not. The course format will heavily feature guest speakers from a variety of careers and a final project in which the students conduct an in-depth investigation of a career path of their choice. 10. ID 3201: Career Planning (2 cr.) - Fall Course for Juniors and Seniors  Are you a junior or senior and wondering what's next after graduation? Another great course for career exploration is ID 3201: Career Planning. Enroll in this 2 credit course for Fall semester! ID 3201 Career Planning teaches advanced job-search strategies like marketplace research, resume writing, networking, interviewing and more. You earn credit for completing things you should be doing anyway! The course is aimed at juniors and seniors. It is not usable toward your 36 credits in Psychology, but may be applied toward general upper-division outside the major credits. See CLA Career Services course descriptions for more information.

Psychology Advising 1. Message from New Psychology Advising Coordinator, Mike Houlahan  Hello Psychology Students! Your Psychology Advising team is excited to have you back on campus in just a couple of short weeks. Over the summer, we have had some changes in staffing with new faces - including Kelley Redmond as Advisor and myself, Mike Houlahan, as the new Coordinator for Psychology Advising. I joined the department as of August 10th, and have been busy meeting with new Transfer students and some of our Psychology students coming in over the summer. Most recently, I worked in Chicago and oversaw operations of a U.S. Department of Education federal grant program (TRIO - Student Support Services) at Oakton Community College. I spent 8 years working at a community college, and have previously held a position as a Residence Hall Director at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. I am excited to be exploring my new home of the Twin Cities, but also finding time to work on finishing my goal of completing an Ed.D. in Higher Education and Organization Change. My past education includes a B.S. Psychology and a M.A. Counseling, both from Truman State University. I am excited to be working in my disciplinary home of Psychology and excited to help you to explore your own interests and plan for your future as graduates from the University of Minnesota. Welcome back, and I look forward to meeting you this year!

Social Interaction Lab Seeking UGRAs for Fall  The Social Interaction Lab run by Dr. Jeff Simpson is looking for research assistants to work this fall on studies on conflict in romantic couples, prosocial behavior, and evolutionary psychology. UGRAs Wanted for Perceptual and Cognitive Research Lab The Engel lab is looking for assistance on a project using virtual reality and EEG to measure how changeable perception is. A course in psych methods is required, as is a B+ or better in cognitive, perception, or biological psychology. We are looking for students who can give minimum of 6 hours/week of time commitment for at least the Fall semester. 6. Research Lab at the VA  A laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System is conducting treatment outcome research to examine with individuals with schizophrenia. There is an opportunity for 2 undergraduate students to become involved with this project as a Research Lab in Psychology experience. The students will learn about the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, with emphasis on symptom severity, social functioning, cognition, and rehabilitation. Students will work as a part of a research team lead by a psychologist and will be involved primarily with scoring measures and entering data. As part of the research experience, students will attend a weekly lab meeting in which topics related to the project are discussed. In addition, students will write an APA-style paper on a related topic. All research activities are conducted at the VA Health Care System. Students must be able to commute to the VA. Student will be asked to register for research credit and to commit an average of 9 hours each week between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. DeYoung Personality Lab Seeking UGRAs  The DeYoung Personality Lab is seeking an undergraduate research assistant to start during the Fall semester, earning research credit for PSY 5993. The current study focuses on emotion regulation and would be an especially good opportunity for those interested in personality, biological psychology, and cognitive psychology. Responsibilities include administering questionnaires to research participants, maintaining and organizing data, recruiting participants, and potentially attending MRI scans depending on performance. Research assistants are expected to work 9 hours per week, with some flexibility, with preference given to students who can commit to at least 2 semesters in the lab. Research with Pediatrics Department  There is currently an opportunity for undergraduate psychology seniors pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) to conduct neuroimaging research at the Department of Pediatrics under Dr. Igor Nestrasil (M.D.). Our studies are focused on researching rare lysosomal diseases such as adrenoleukodystrophy, Gaucher disease, mucolipidosis, and mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). The goal of our research is to better understand the relationship between disease progression and brain structure and function within these diseases. We are looking for students with a strong aptitude for learning scientific concepts and technical computational skills for brain MRI analysis.
