Wednesday, November 18th, 3:30-4:30pm, N639 Elliott Hall
This spring, Psychology is piloting an online internship course available for Psychology juniors (60+ credits) and seniors (90+ credits). PSY 3996, section #002 is an upper-division, special studies Psychology course which connects to an approved Psychology related internship opportunity. This course offers students in Psychology the opportunity to complete an internship working within diverse professional and community settings while earning 3 academic credits over the course of the semester. We are holding an information session next week for students to learn more about the course, available internship opportunities, and the application process. The event will include workshops centered around career planning, using storytelling for effective interviewing, preparing for graduate and professional school in the US, LinkedIn and American networking, understanding your US work options, effective resumes, and more. 3. Summer Research Opportunity through DESRE
DESRE (Disparities Elimination Summer Research Experience) is a 6-week summer program at Georgia Southern University hosted by the Rural Health Research Institute in collaboration with the Center for Rural Health and Health Disparities at Mercer University. DESRE is a paid, hands-on research experience for undergraduate and graduate students. During the program, students engage in cutting-edge rural health disparities research and receive training in the unique factors associated with addressing health disparities. Students work with and learn from a team of experienced faculty researchers from both Georgia Southern University and Mercer University. The program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. 4. 2016 Latino Mental Health Research Training in Mexico
Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training program (MHIRT) is an 11-week summer research training program designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate level researchers to address disparities in mental health care of U.S. Latinos with serious mental illness. The program is comprised of an intensive one-week training seminar at USC, and a 10-week training program in Puebla México. The first phase will take place at USC and consists of research workshops by some of the top Latino Mental Health Researchers in the country. The one-week intensive seminar will serve to help trainees develop research and professional skills to reduce disparities and to motivate them to pursue advanced research degrees. In addition the seminar will provide them with a cultural orientation to facilitate a smooth transition to living and working in Mexico. 5. 2016 Udall Scholarships
The University of Minnesota will nominate up to four sophomores or juniors in any major for Udall Scholarships ($7000 for a year of undergraduate education). Udall Scholars have demonstrated leadership, public service and commitment to issues related to American Indian nations or the environment. Campus application deadline is January 15, 2016. 6. Spring Course with Spring Break Opportunity: CI 5150 - Borderland Realities, Education Policy & Agency
Borderland Realities, Education Policy and Agency: Exploring the Immigrant Experience brings to focus the history of individual, institutional (educational) and cultural forms of marginalization and discrimination of immigrant communities from US early history to today. This class includes a Spring Break trip to Tucson and the Sonora Desert led by the non-profit Borderlinks. Service learning opportunities may include water drops in the desert, interpreting for newly arrived migrants and serving as a supportive witness for migrants at deportation court. Both in Minnesota and Tucson, participants will dialogue with local stakeholders, advocates and agents of change including migrants, activists, border patrol, ranchers, faith communities, lawyers and lawmakers. Students will also have the opportunity to compare and contrast US immigrant issues with those across the globe. Registering for CI5150 requires participation in the Arizona experience. 8. Seeking International Undergraduate Students for New York and San Francisco Internships
Applications are now open for international undergraduate students interested in earning three-credits while doing a six-week internship in San Francisco or New York in summer 2016. Individuals must have completed their sophomore year by the time the internship begins to qualify. All majors are encouraged to apply. ISSS and the Leadership Minor are partners in this internship opportunity.
