7. Autonomy Support Coding Project in ICD
Autonomy supportive parenting is characterized by behaviors such as allowing a child to choose, praising a child's efforts, providing hints and suggestions when needed, and structuring a task in a way that provides optimal challenge for the child (not too easy or too difficult). Autonomy supportive parenting has been show to predict the development of self-control skills in young children. For this project, you will be coding videos of homeless parent-child dyads working on a puzzle together for 5 minutes. Coding the videos includes transcribing the speech between the mother and child and then rating autonomy support, controlling behaviors, and laissez-faire behaviors (i.e., uninvolved) across four scales. This semester, you will be trained to become reliable on the coding system, and once reliable you would help code the videos. To Apply: Please contact Rebecca Distefano (diste020@umn.edu). Include Name, Email, Class Year, GPA, and Reason for applying (no more than a few sentences, please) in the body of the email and “Undergraduate Research Interest” in the subject line.
8. RA Position: Coding Faces, Voices and Bodies for Positive Emotion
The Masten Lab at the Institute of Child Development is seeking a Research Assistant to help with a positive emotion coding project. The position is available immediately and open to students in any major. We're happy to work with RAs to get research credits or Honors experience for this position. The project investigates how emotional interactions between parents and children relates to child resilience. The RA will watch the videos of young children interacting with their parents, and code every 10 seconds of these videos on key indicators of positive emotion. This is an advanced coding system, and you will receive extensive training on the coding process in order to achieve reliability with the anchor coder, as well as ongoing support throughout the project. Your input into how the coding process can be modified and improved will also be welcomed. Previous psychology or child development research experience is a plus. However, we are primarily seeking individuals who are very interested to learn about this topic area and have a strong attention to detail. To apply, please send the following: A. Resume, B. Unofficial transcript (you can download this for free at One Stop), c. 1-2 paragraphs explaining why you are interested in this position (you can include it in the body of your email). In the email subject line, please write "Application for Positive Emotion Project." Please send this material to Jyothi Ramakrishnan at ramak032@umn.edu. Also, please feel free to e-mail me any questions you might have prior to applying.
