We received many more manuscript submissions than we have ever received before, and we must begin the review process very soon in order to complete it by the end of the semester. If you've been hoping to go abroad and study psychology, but don't have a whole semester to do it, this winter break is your chance! Dr. Angus MacDonald, clinical psychology faculty member, is leading a winter break global seminar to northern Thailand. If you are interested in the study of addiction, clinical or biological psychology, cultural context, happiness or spiritualism, don't miss this excellent opportunity. Using Chiang Mai as a backdrop, you'll explore the psychology of desire and craving as well as Buddhist techniques used in understanding and overcoming addiction. How do we find purpose in our lives and cope with suffering? On this global seminar, "Golden Triangle: Addiction, Power and Buddhism in Thailand," you will discover a Golden Triangle that encompasses three choices about how to find happiness: acquire status (power), use chemicals (addiction), or reduce the influence of desires (Buddhism). Psychology will be hosting an informational event where you can learn more about the seminar/travel experience, hear directly from Professor MacDonald, receive practical information from Learning Abroad Center staff, and taste authentic Thai cuisine! 4.Make Learning Abroad Happen! Short-Term Loan Program for Winter Break Seminars
The Learning Abroad Center is pleased to announce a new pilot program to assist students pay for the up-front costs associated with learning abroad by providing short term loans. Developed in close consultation with UofM faculty and staff from advising, student services, office of student finance, TRiO, MLK, MCAE, ATS and others, the Bridging Loan Program allows students to delay the payment of their program deposit and covers the cost of their flight until their financial aid funds are available to them. The hope is that this will make learning abroad accessible to more students. Student must have an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) of $10,000 or less to qualify. Program is in pilot mode currently and available only for Winter Break 2013 programs run by the Learning Abroad Center (Psychology's Thailand program applies!). The hope is we will be able to extend this to other program time periods next academic year. 6.UGRAs for Educational Psych Reading Comprehension Lab--Course Credit Option
The Department of Educational Psychology is looking for six to ten upper level undergraduate students to help with a grant-funded research project. In this second year of the grant, the research team is continuing development of a teaching intervention to improve reading comprehension by struggling fourth graders. Applicants should be interested in working with student's learning data and experiencing educational research. Tasks that selected undergraduates will provide include transcribing recordings of student's spoken thoughts during a reading exercise, scoring, coding, and other data-entry tasks, and producing teaching materials. Selected undergraduates will also attend a bi-weekly lab meeting. Most of the work will be performed in the Education Sciences Building during M-F daytime hours. Spring semester there may be opportunities to tutor elementary school students. Undergraduate research assistants may receive course credit (Psy4993) or volunteer 3, 6 or 9 hours per week. The study continues into spring semester, if the undergraduate research assistant is interested and available to continue. 7.UGRAs Needed for Educational Psych Research in Elementary School
I am a graduate student working with Dr. Ted Christ and am looking for 3-4 reliable students who can help me collect data for my master's thesis in a local elementary school. Tasks include attending a brief training, administering a questionnaire, collecting reading fluency data one-to-one, and entering data. I prefer people who are available at the same time 2-3 days per week for 4 weeks, but we can work around scheduling conflicts if need be. This can be for credit or a volunteer opportunity. We are looking for an energetic individual to work as a PCA with a 6-year-old girl with autism in St. Paul's Mariam Park Neighborhood. This fun position would include training with the child's home-based Applied Behavior Analysis team! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). 1.Fall 2012 Walk-In Hours for Psychology Undergraduate Advising
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated walk-in hours. While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds walk-in hours once a week and cannot address walk-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified walk-in times. Due to the high student demand the first two weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available from 8:00am - 4:30pm each business day (except Thursday from 8 - 9:30) for 5 - 10 minute issues. Our normal walk-in hours will take effect after Monday, September 17th. 4.UGRAs for Conflict Mediation Project--For Credit
The Conflict Mediation Lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants to start work during the fall semester, earning research credit for PSY 5993. RAs will be assisting with coding conflict mediation videos and data analysis in a study examining the effect of verbal and non-verbal behaviors on conflict mediation outcomes. Responsibilities include watching and coding videos as well as attending a weekly team lab meeting, held on Tuesdays from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. The position runs during the fall semester, with the opportunity to continue into the spring semester. RAs will be expected to work approximately 10 hours per week (may vary across weeks). Strong candidates for this position will be conscientious, bright, motivated students interested in the research process. The Political Communication Lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants to start work during the fall semester, earning research credit for PSY 5993. RAs will be assisting with literature reviews and data analysis in a study examining the relationship between different types of verbal accounts (e.g., excuses or denials) and political scandal. Responsibilities include conducting literature reviews as well as attending a weekly team lab meeting, held on Wednesdays from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. The position runs during the fall semester, with the opportunity to continue into the spring semester. A health and social psychology laboratory is looking for an undergraduate research assistant to assist with several projects this semester. Projects touch on topics such as eating and snacking, decision-making, and goal setting. The successful applicant will be responsible for and gain experience in running participant sessions, tracking participant compensation, scheduling participants, literature searching and data entry. 8.UGRAs for Assistance on 'After Deployment Adaptive Parenting Tools' Lab--For Credit
The After Deployment Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT) program has for-credit research opportunities for select undergraduate students. The ADAPT study, funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Drug Abuse, is a randomized clinical trial developing evidence-based programming for families that builds resilience, is strengths-focused and sustainable after this study has been completed. Led by clinical psychologist, Dr. Abi Gewirtz, ADAPT has partnered with the Minnesota National Guard and Reserves to develop and test parenting resources for military families with school-aged children who are dealing with the deployment process. Minnesota has been a National leader in creating and supporting programs for soldiers and their families. Find out more about the program, click here. 9.Work as a Youth Program Specialist in Minneapolis! 3/4-Time Position Available
This grant-funded position will assist youth ages 12-18 with their participation in youth development programs and leadership opportunities. Working in conjunction with a dedicated team of library staff, the Youth Program Specialist will be a primary contact for youth after school and during evening hours. Duties include: Assess needs and interests of young people and align related programming opportunities at the library; promote teambuilding and cultivate leadership skills among youth participating in library programming; foster a safe, positive, and supportive environment for youth; work closely with program coordinator to manage youth employees, monitor skill development and advocate for youth; provide support and supervision for adult volunteer mentors; perform administrative duties including maintenance of participation records; and assist library staff with program evaluation and make program recommendations. Successful applicants must possess: high school diploma and two years of either experience in youth development field/similar experience working with youth in an urban setting or associates degree with youth coursework (combination of skills and experience totaling 2 years okay); ability to work with youth from a wide range of backgrounds and socio-economic statuses; ability to work as part of a team; interest in digital literacy and its applications in the field of youth work; creativity and innovation to apply youth development practices to a library setting; ability to organize, plan, implement and manage several projects at the same time; and ability to handle the demands of a constantly changing work environment and workload. This is a part-time, one-year contract position (32 hours per week, hourly rate $17.50). Hours will include some evenings and weekends. The Children, Youth & Family Consortium (CYFC) is an intermediary organization that connects research, teaching, policy and community practice to organizations that, in turn, apply that information in direct service to children and families. 14.Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Scholarship for Abroad Experience!
The International Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Scholarship is designed to promote learning abroad opportunities to undergraduate students by providing critical funding to students enrolled in select credit-bearing learning abroad programs involving a research project. The learning abroad program must be a semester or academic year in length involving a minimum of 100 hours dedicated to research that occurs onsite. For more information, click here. 1.Fall 2012 Psych Advising Office Hours
Our general office will be open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am - 4:30pm during the Fall 2012 semester. Advisor availability within this time frame varies. If you would like to meet with an advisor, be sure to schedule an appointment or come during designated walk-in hours. Due to the high demand for walk-in advising the first two weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available for 5 - 10 minute walk-in questions, including signing off on PSY 5993 research contracts, from 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and from 9:30am - 4:30pm Thursday. Our regular walk-in advising schedule will begin Tuesday, September 18th. Check in to the front desk in N108 Elliott Hall for walk-in service.

5.UGRA needed for Psychiatry Department Study on Impulse Control Disorder--For Credit
Are you interested in learning more about psychiatric clinical research? The Impulse Control Disorder Clinic of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota has a volunteer position for credit available for Fall 2012. The lab conducts research trials for various impulse control disorders, such as pathological gambling, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance dependence. It also studies predictive factors in the development of behavioral and substance addiction through the use of neurocognitive and functional imaging techniques. Duties of a volunteer research assistant include assisting the study team with data entry, regulatory documents, advertising, subject recruitment, and the subject interviews. There is also the possibility of drafting a research paper to be submitted for peer-review and publication. At the end of the fall, the volunteer will know how research trials function on a day-to-day basis and develop his/her skills in scientific writing. This is a volunteer position that can be registered for as 3 credits of PSY 5993 Directed Research. The time commitment is about 9 hours per week. 8.UGRA Needed for Developmental Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab--For Credit
Are you planning to apply to graduate school in the near future? Need more research experience? The Developmental Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab is seeking the help of reliable, motivated and conscientious volunteers to assist anywhere between 9 and 12 hours per week (equivalent to 3 or 4 research credits--must be PSY 4993 for inclusion in psych major) this fall. Students will assist with various aspects of the research process, such as recruiting/schedule participants, assisting with testing and other aspects of the research. Much of the research in the lab is cutting edge work investigating the development of executive function in early childhood, the ability to exercise conscious control over thought, emotion and action. 9.Research Assistants Wanted for a New Study on Communication in Couples--For Credit
The social psych research team is looking for dedicated research assistants who are interested in assisting with research in social psychology for Fall 2012. Duties will include watching short videotapes of couples communicating and coding these interactions for certain behaviors. Training will be provided on how to code the tapes. RA's will be free to make their own weekly schedule as long as coding deadlines are being met. Getting involved with this lab will be a beneficial opportunity for anyone interested in gaining research experience and knowledge in the areas of behavioral coding, social support, and close relationships. The lab is also open to working with honors students, those enrolled in a Major Project Research Section, or UROP students. This research opportunity will be conducted under Dr. Jeffry A. 10.Undergrad Research Experience with Psychopathology at VA Medical Center--For Credit
Interested in working with research subjects with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or traumatic brain injury? Dr. Scott Sponheim's research laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center is offering an immediately available research opportunity for U of M Psychology majors in severe mental disorders and traumatic brain injury. Fourteen undergraduates have done their theses with Dr. Sponheim at the Minneapolis VA and 9 students have completed doctoral dissertations in the lab. Many undergraduates have also completed PSY 4/5993 credits toward the psychology major through working on his studies. Current studies include VA-funded research into neurobiological markers (EEG, ERP, MRI, MEG) of genetic vulnerability for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, a multi-site genome wide association study (GWAS) to identify what aspects of genetic variation are associated with cognitive and functional impairments in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and a Department of Defense funded study into the essential neural features of blast-induced traumatic brain injury and PTSD in soldiers from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, preferably be juniors or seniors, and have completed courses in psychopathology (i.e., abnormal psychology) and statistics. Minimum commitment is 6-months for 5 hours/week. Responsibilities will depend on the applicant and current needs of the lab, but will likely begin with data entry and may expand into EEG collection and analysis, cognitive testing, interviewing, or participant screening and recruitment. Many previous students have used the experience in the lab to create a major project and support entry into graduate or medical school. 11.UGRA Needed for Treatment Outcome Research Lab at VA Medical Center--For Credit
A laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System is conducting treatment outcome research to examine how individuals with schizophrenia change as a result of participating in computer-based skills training. There is an opportunity for one undergraduate student to become involved with this project as a Research Lab in Psychology experience. The student will learn about the assessment and treatment of schizophrenia, with emphasis on symptom severity, cognition, and rehabilitation. The student will work as a part of a research team and primarily will be responsible for scoring and entering data, assisting with the piloting of study protocols, and attending weekly lab meetings. In addition, the student will write an APA-style paper on a related topic. All research activities are conducted at the VA Health Care System. The student must be able to commute to the VA and be available to attend meetings on Tuesdays mornings. The student will be asked to commit to an average of 9 hours/week for one semester and can receive research credit for PSY 4993. 15.Internship Focusing on Mental Health Services for Children
Children, Youth & Family Consortium (CYFC) is seeking a part-time intern. The Cultural Providers Network intern will have the unique opportunity to connect with a diverse group of community professionals and faculty working to improve mental health services for children. The intern will participate in rich conversation about promising practice and research, learn about effective programs and intervention techniques, and practice skills related to program growth and development. The Cultural Providers Network (CPN) Intern must be a committed individual with excellent written and oral communication skills and interest in children's mental health within communities of color. This position has a variety of different tasks and activities, and requires both team and autonomous work. The candidate must be committed to working with diverse populations of community members, researchers and practitioners. The candidate will also have demonstrated an ability to learn, handle and prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines, maintain a professional demeanor with CYFC's constituents, be effective at identifying and solving problems, and pay close attention to detail.
