4.Gradstaff Webinar for Graduating Seniors
Gradstaff will be hosting a free Webinar: What's Next? Job Search Strategies for Graduating Seniors, next week Tuesday, November 18th at 11:00am. This webinar will address these topics: Identifying transferable skills and career interests: Where you fit in the workplace; Demographic trends: How an aging workforce can impact your job search; Where the Jobs Are: Comparing Large vs. Small/Medium Employers; Target industries: Examples of industries that are hiring; 5 Entry-level career opportunities that you don't know about: Some examples to get you started. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation, where attendees can get answers to any specific job search questions they have. 8.McNair Research Scholars Applications
The University of Minnesota's Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is now accepting applications for summer 2015. The priority application deadline is January 26, 2015. The goal of McNair Scholars is to give undergraduate students intensive, faculty-driven research experiences and prepare students for entry into graduate school. During the the 10-week summer research program students: Develop a great relationship with a professor that is essential for applying to graduate school; Receive a $3,500 stipend; Conduct research with a professor; Develop a quality research paper; Receive guidance through the graduate school process (e.g. identify graduate programs, write a personal statement, create a curriculum vitae, etc.), and Present research at poster sessions held on campus. Qualifications include: First generation college student and low income, or from an underrepresented group; GPA of 2.75 and above; Full-time sophomore or junior and a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident; Students with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) focus are strongly encouraged to apply to the McNair Scholars Program, as are student veterans. 9.MCAE Scholarship
The Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE) is turning 10 this year! To celebrate, we partnered with Target Corporation to provide a special scholarship opportunity for eligible undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. MCAE will be awarding three one-time scholarships of $1,000 for Spring 2015 semester. Preference will be given to those students who are currently involved in MCAE programs and initiatives. To be eligible for the MCAE @ 10 Scholarship a student must: Be an undergraduate (full-time student), have a FAFSA on file, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, demonstrate financial need (students should consult with One Stop if they are uncertain, and be from an underrepresented background. This spring semester the Child Psychology department will be offering two special topics classes that are open to all students! These topics would be a great option for students interested in the arts, social work, sociology, public affairs or who just have a desire to work with children. Both classes are three credits. CPSY 4310 SEC 001: Imagination will be taught Mondays from 4:00-6:30pm and will This topic will examine how psychologists think about and study human imagination and play. CPSY 4310 SEC 002 Resilience in Children will be taught Wednesdays, from 4:00pm - 5:40pm.

Natalis Outcomes is seeking a lead behavioral health care manager to perform the following at Natalis Counseling & Psychology Solutions, a multispecialty mental and behavioral health outpatient clinic: 1. Provide care coordinator services and referral support to clients and clinic providers 2. Assist clients with accessing community-based resources and services 3. Effectively work with the clinic's providers 4. Administer, interpret and coordinate client treatment outcomes evaluation and tracking 5. Perform other duties assigned by administrative or clinical leaders. The position will be full time position during normal business hours, and is located on MTC Light rail Green Line (though private transportation is desired). 18.Conservation Corps Americorps Positions for Fall Grads
Each year, the Youth Outdoors program hires AmeriCorps members to work outdoors in City and County public green spaces and to lead youth crews in the same work. We offer after-school jobs to 140 high school students in the metro area each year and our AmeriCorps members provide leadership and support to these youth. The Youth Outdoors program at Conservation Corps Minnesota is currently accepting applications for 22 AmeriCorps positions: Youth Outdoors Field Specialists, Youth Outdoors Crew Leaders and Youth Outdoors Crew Members. These positions are posted on GoldPASS but since they involve youth development and education, they may be of particular interest to Psychology students. More information and the link to the application can be found online. These AmeriCorps positions begin in early 2015 and end in mid-December. They require at least 40 hours per week so are likely best suited for recent graduates or Fall 2014 graduates. Upon finishing their terms of AmeriCorps service, Youth Outdoors members are eligible for an education award in the amount of $5645 (if eligible) that may be used for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans.

1.Psychology Diversity Expo!
The Psychology Undergraduate Diversity Council is a student advisory group dedicated to engaging diverse perspectives and ensuring accessibility of services and programs within the psychology undergraduate program. The Diversity Council will be hosting the very first Psychology Diversity Expo Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 5th. This event will feature programs and services that support students' academic success, engagement and goals. Students are welcome to come and go throughout the Expo. Speak with researchers in psychology labs, learn about summer research programs for multicultural and first generation students, become familiar with Career Services' resources, speak to Psychology grad program staff. 8.NEW! Psychology & Research in Madrid: Summer 2015
The Learning Abroad Center, together with the Department of Psychology and the Fundacion Ortega-Marañon in Madrid, will be launching a new study abroad program in Madrid, Spain this summer. On this program, students will earn 6 credits of PSY Credit in just 6 weeks! Students will take Psy 3061 (taught by Professor Jonathan Gewirtz, Department of Psychology UMN-TC) and work in one of 2 world-famous research labs in Madrid, earning 3 credits of Psy 5993. Students on the program will have the choice of living in local dormitories or with a Spanish host family. In addition to spending 6 weeks in Madrid, students will also take a study trip to Toledo, Spain. This program is a great opportunity for students to gain an international perspective on psychology, specifically in the brain science area, and to work on psychological research while abroad! 10.Neuroscience Course NSCI 3100 - Mind and Brain
The Neuroscience Department will be offering NSCI 3100, Mind and Brain, this Spring. The topic of this course will cover the implications of the physical nature of the mind, with an emphasis on decision-making as an entry point into neuroscience and psychology. The course will count towards the Psychology Bachelor of Science Outside Foundation Coursework in the Area D. Biological Science Foundation Cluster. The Psychology Undergraduate Diversity Council is a student advisory group dedicated to engaging diverse perspectives and ensuring accessibility of services and programs within the psychology undergraduate program. The Diversity Council will be hosting the very first Psychology Diversity Expo next week Wednesday, November 5th. This event will feature programs and services that support students' academic success, engagement and goals. Students are welcome to come and go throughout the Expo. Speak with researchers in psychology labs, learn about summer research programs for multicultural and first generation students, become familiar with Career Services' resources, speak to Psychology grad program staff. 4.Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility
The Center for Spirituality & Healing is sponsoring The Wellbeing Lecture Series. They have invited experts in various fields of health and wellbeing to share the latest science as well as new knowledge and tools to help you find your own path to wellbeing. The Series' next speaker is Social Psychologist, Dr. Ellen Langer who will be presenting: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility. Dr. Langer is the first female professor to gain tenure in the Psychology Department at Harvard University. She has been described as the "mother of mindfulness" and has written extensively on the illusion of control, mindful aging, stress, decision-making, and health. Dr. Langer has been a guest speaker all over the world, including Japan, Malaysia, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Switzerland, Argentina and China. 9.NEW! Psychology & Research in Madrid: Summer 2015
The Learning Abroad Center, together with the Department of Psychology and the Fundacion Ortega-Marañon in Madrid, will be launching a new study abroad program in Madrid, Spain this summer. On this program, students will earn 6 credits of PSY Credit in just 6 weeks! Students will take Psy 3061 (taught by Professor Jonathan Gewirtz, Department of Psychology UMN-TC) and work in one of 2 world-famous research labs in Madrid, earning 3 credits of Psy 5993. Students on the program will have the choice of living in local dormitories or with a Spanish host family. In addition to spending 6 weeks in Madrid, students will also take a study trip to Toledo, Spain. This program is a great opportunity for students to gain an international perspective on psychology, specifically in the brain science area, and to work on psychological research while abroad! 10.Practicum Course in ABA for Autism
We're entering our 17th year of offering a practicum in ABA for autism at the Psychology Department at the University of Minnesota (Psy 4012 - Behavior Analysis and Autism). We typically have room for about 12 undergraduates each spring, who participate in 7 hours per week of introductory practicum work in family homes and ABA centers in the Twin Cities. This is part of a four-course sequence in the Psychology Department including: Psy 3011: Introduction to Learning & Behavior; Psy 4011: Applied Behavior Analysis; Psy 4012: Behavior Analysis and Autism; and Psy 3996: Undergraduate Field Study/Internship in Psychology. A handout with full descriptions of these courses can be found on the Course Catalog online or picked up in Psychology Advising (N108 Elliott Hall). If you are seeking credits in autism or ABA, then please contact Dr. Eric Larsson and request a prerequisites questionnaire. He will be able to provide you with all of the necessary information.

11.WRIT 4431W Science, Technology, and the Law
Learn about areas of the law that are greatly affected by technology and scientific discovery: privacy, intellectual property, and health law. Using case reading and discussion, the course begins with a survey of what actions by business, government, and private individuals constitute invasion of privacy as well as what limits are placed on the right of privacy. For example, students discuss The Wiretap Act and The Patriot Act, and how the Fifth and Fourth Amendments affect such laws. Students then discuss intellectual property, in particular music downloading, filesharing, and electronic books. The final section of the course centers on health law--how medical science and the law have affected each other. Students will find this course prepares them for the legal issues they will encounter in future careers in industry, government, and media. There are Peer Research Consultants who provide one-on-one assistance to students to help them develop academic research strategies. The Libraries also sponsor an Online Assignment Calculator that allows students to put in due dates and get research and writing steps for assignments like a research papers, speeches, videos, lab reports, UROP proposals and more. If you aren't sure where to start with conducting research in the library system, there is also an online tutorial to walk students through the basics of using the University Libraries, the website, and finding academic sources. FOCUS is one of the nation's premier programs for raising awareness of graduate education. It is designed to attract the best and brightest underrepresented minority students and encourage them to pursue graduate degrees at Georgia Tech (particularly those with research interests in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, earth and atmospheric/environmental sciences, mathematics, physics, physiology, or psychology). The program asks students to write a personal essay about their dream job and submit it to our office. Winners will gain expanded access to peer mentorship, in-depth resume, cover letter and LinkedIn critiques, resources to conduct informational interviews in the local area, an invitation to networking opportunities, and more! 3.Psychology Colloquium: Neuroimaging, PTSD, Resilience, and Posttraumatic Growth
Thursday, October 16th from 3:30-4:30pm in Walter Library 402, the Department of Psychology will host Brian Engdahl, Ph.D. as part of the Psychology Fall Colloquium Series. The search is on for biological markers of mental disorders. Neuroimaging techniques that assess brain function (EEG, PET, MRI) are providing tools in this search. We are using magnetoencephalography (MEG), a unique neuroimaging technique that is simple (task free resting state), safe, short (1 minute), dynamic (based on ongoing activity collected every millisecond) and sensitive to changes in brain communication patterns. MEG allows excellent discrimination between controls and disorder-specific groups. We have studied nearly 2000 subjects. Findings on multiple select groups will be presented, highlighting neural differences in PTSD, trauma adaptation, and posttraumatic growth. 7.Genetic Counseling Graduate Program
At the University of Minnesota, we have one of 35 graduate programs accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling to educate genetic counseling practitioners in North America. The program currently accepts 8 new students each year. Most of our students secure teaching assistantships in their first year that helps to fund a portion of their studies with partial tuition remission and a stipend. Our graduates are employed in a wide variety of positions in clinical settings, research, public health and industry both nationally and internationally. FOCUS is one of the nation's premier programs for raising awareness of graduate education. 12.DESRE- Disparities Elimination Summer Research Experience Program
The initiative is a 6-week summer program at Georgia Southern University hosted by the Rural Health Research Institute and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The initiative, called DESRE (Disparities Elimination Summer Research Experience), is a paid, hands-on research experience for undergraduate and graduate students. During the program, students engage in cutting-edge rural health disparities research and receive training in the unique factors associated with addressing health disparities. Students work with and learn from a team of experienced faculty researchers from both Georgia Southern University and Mercer University. 16.Spring 15 - PSY 5960: Neuroscience, Philosophy & Ethics
This Spring, the Department of Psychology will be offering a 3 credit seminar course titled "Neuroscience, Philosophy, & Ethics" - Psy 5960. Neuroscience increasingly allows us to explain the human experience in terms of mechanistic, electrochemical processes. The current course explores philosophical issues sparked by these developments in two modules. The first module examines the ways in which human neuroscience may shed new light on age-long philosophical quagmires such as mind-body dualism, free-will, and consciousness. For example, can all of conscious experience (qualia) be reduced to neurobiology? The second module turns to neuroethical questions regarding the potential benefits and harms neuroscience might bring to the moral fabric of society. For example, could brain-based accounts of human behavior increase societal compassion toward those exhibiting taboo or antisocial behaviors (e.g., substance abuse, mental illness, violence, reckless driving, homelessness). Following modules one and two, the course will cover an additional 3-4 topics chosen collectively by enrolled students. The semester will also include two guest lectures by UMN professors from the Law School, Philosophy Department, Neuroscience Department, or School of Public Health. This course will be open to junior and senior undergraduates; preference will be given to students who have completed Psy 3061 or an equivalent course. The seminar will be taught by Shmuel Lissek who is an assistant professor in the department. If you think you may be interested in taking this course, please contact Dr. Lissek at smlissek@umn.edu. Expressing interest does not entail a commitment to enroll in the course. This course would count towards the Psychology Electives portion of the psychology major (BA or BS).

4.Webinar: 50 Shades of Developing Gray Matter: Adolescents & Marijuana
More Americans now perceive marijuana as harmless and many believe that it should be legal and unregulated. Currently, 22 states either allow medical or recreational use of the drug. As policy shifts toward medicalization and legalization of marijuana, it is reasonable to expect that prevalence rates and resulting health consequences will increase. The Minnesota Center for Chemical and Mental Health presents Dr. Ken Winters speaking on the use of marijuana by adolescents and the clinical implications. Dr. Winters is a Professor in the UMN Department of Psychiatry, Director for the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research, and a senior scientist with the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia. His primary research interests are the assessment and treatment of addictions, including adolescent drug abuse and problem gambling. 6.MCAE Scholarship & Internship Fair
The Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE) is hosting a Scholarship and Internship Information Fair tomorrow, Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 11:00am - 2:00pm in the Mississippi Room at Coffman Memorial Union. Local corporations, government agencies and university programs will be there recruiting for their internship and scholarship opportunities and scholarship experts and organizations will be onsite to answer questions. In addition to recruiters, we strength coaching will be available, and students can bring their resumes and have them reviewed by a career services staff member. Go online to register and to see which organizations will be attending. Registration is not required but appreciated. Students who register will receive event reminders and information on how to prepare for the event. All eligible student participants will have a chance to win an ipad.

8.Facial Emotion Coding RA Position Available Immediately
A lab at the Institute of Child Development is seeking Research Assistants to help us this fall semester with a facial emotion coding project. You will gain training in face emotion coding and learn more generally about conducting psychology research. This may be an especially good opportunity for individuals who think they may want to eventually pursue graduate studies in psychology or child development and want to gain research experience. This experience can be from 1 to 3 credits, depending on your time commitment (3-9 hours per week effective from now until the end of the fall semester). 9.Research Opportunity in Child Development
The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. From offering suggestions for developing protocols to running sessions with children and families, research assistants are afforded every opportunity to pursue their own interests and apply their own skills within our lab. As a Carlson Lab RA, you will interact with some of the leading scientists in the field of child development,. You will also have the chance to contribute to presentations of our research at international conferences and be included in future publications. This is the perfect opportunity to develop important research skills and relationships while learning about children's social cognitive development. Schedules are highly flexible. The Office for National and International Scholarships hosts a variety of scholarship information sessions throughout the school year regarding several competitive scholarships that U of M students can apply for. Applying for national or international scholarships or fellowships can be a great learning experience, but it is also very challenging. The Office for National and International Scholarships have a variety of resources to help students assess their scholarship potential, understand the application process, and prepare the most competitive application. Explore what makes Nordic countries among the happiest in the world! This May (2015) Dr. Michael Stebleton will be leading EDHD 3100: Examining the Good Life. This is a 3-week, 3-credit program where students will examine how education, employment and environmental issues contribute to high standards of living in Denmark and Sweden. Participants will travel like locals, by bike, around many of Copenhagen's car-free streets, and learn about the importance of smart urban design in the parks and canals. This course will also fulfill the Global Perspectives Theme Liberal Education Requirement. Sign up today!

This Thursday the Learning Abroad Center will host an information session about the Study Abroad in Istanbul, Turkey. The session will be Thursday, October 9, 2:30pm, Social Sciences 260. Study Abroad in Istanbul has coursework well suited to CLA majors, with classes fulfilling several UMN Lib Ed requirements (including Writing Intensive). The program will include Turkish language, housing in host families, and limited credit-bearing internship placements new for Spring 2015. The program also features a two-week academic excursion to Rome, Italy (included in the program fee). The application deadline is November 1.
