Introducing PsyCareer Drop-in Hours!  Do you have questions about internships, job search strategies, graduate school planning, or career fields related to your psychology major? Visit our new weekly PsyCareer Drop-in Hours with Laura Heilman, CLA Career Counselor. Laura will hold drop-ins once each week on a different day and time in conjunction with Psychology Undergraduate Advising Drop-in Hours. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Info Session  Wednesday, October 21st, 11:15am-12:45pm, 205 Humphrey School  The Central Intelligence Agency is interested in meeting with students from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. Agency representatives will cover a broad range of topics to include the Agency's mission, potential career opportunities, the online process, an overview of the security and medical screening process; and there will be a question-and-answer period. In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet with agency representatives one on one during Recruiter-in-Residence sessions. Mental Health Resources Recruitment Open House  Thursday, October 29th, 5:00-7:00pm; MHR East, St. Paul Mental Health Resources, Inc. National Alliance on Mental Illness State Conference: Forging a Better Future Saturday, November 7th, 8:30am-5:00pm; RiverCentre, St. Paul; Registration Required!  NAMI Minnesota's State Conference will be held Nov. 7, at the RiverCentre in St. Paul. The opening keynote speaker will be Lisa Dixon, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, and director of the Center for Practice Innovations at New York State Hospital. Dr. Dixon is an internationally recognized health services researcher with over 25 years of continuous funding from the National Institute of Mental Health and the VA. The closing keynoter will be activist and comedian Kevin Breel, known widely for his virally viewed TED Talk, "Confessions of a Depressed Comic" which gives voice to an often silent struggle and offers a message of hope. The conference will also include a Youth Track. A more detailed agenda will be posted soon.The cost for students is $35, and there are limited partial scholarships available. Lunch is included. Research 12. Volunteer Research Assistants Wanted  Students assistants wanted for a project involving searching for recent studies of aggression, and related searches, using Google Scholar. Campus Resources 13. Mental Health Resources  As fall semester is now in full swing, this time of year can also be a time of transition, increasing demand, and heightened stress. It can sometimes be difficult to find the right balance. We want to make sure that you know that the University has a number of resources available to help students through tough times. Go to the Student Mental Health website to find information about the various University of Minnesota mental health resources available to students. These resources may be of assistance to you, as well as friends who may be experiencing emotions and/or displaying behavior that concerns you. 14. University Libraries  The U Libraries are a great resource for students! They have free workshops, tutorials and services! There are Peer Research Consultants who provide one-on-one assistance to students to help them develop academic research strategies and navigate the . The Libraries also sponsor an Online Assignment Calculator that allows students to keep track of due dates and receive step-by-step instructions to stay on top of assignments like a research papers, presentations, projects, UROP proposals, and more. If you aren't sure where to start with conducting research in the library system, there is an Online Tutorial to walk you through the basics of using the University Libraries, the website, and finding academic sources. Learning Abroad 15. Volunteer over Spring Break in Ecuador or Guatemala  Applications for the Learning Abroad Center's volunteer and community engagement Spring Break programs are due November 2nd. On the Volunteer & Community Engagement in Ecuador program, students will spend spring break in Ecuador volunteering and engaging with the local community. They will explore colonial Quito, a cloud forest reserve, and the beautiful Andes mountains; volunteer at a community-based project in a rural area; and live with a host family. On the Volunteer & Community Engagement in Guatemala program, students will explore the colonial city of Antigua during spring break. They will engage with local community members through volunteer activities, homestays, and Spanish tutoring. Volunteer projects include education, social work, and construction. The Non-Credit Learning Abroad Grant is applicable to these programs. For more information, see the Learning Abroad Center's website.

Start the Semester Off On the Wrong Foot? LASK 1101 Can Help  If you're having some difficulties this semester, LASK 1101: Academic Refresher might be a great B-term course for you. LASK 1101 is a 1-credit, mid-semester course that offers assistance over the 2nd half of the semester to students experiencing academic concerns. In LASK 1101, students receive weekly instruction and the opportunity to consult with students facing similar challenges. A permission number is not needed to register for this course. You may find the course listed in the Class Search, using "LASK" as a subject search term. See the Student Academic Success Services (SASS) websitefor more information.

Active Recess Volunteers Needed at Windom Elementary  Active Recess is an approach designed to increase the physical activity of students during recess, as well as decrease incidents of problem behavior on the playground. Volunteers will assist the "Recess Squad" (a group of Windom students) in setting up and supervising the Play Stations, and will promote positive interactions between the students and/or assist in conflict resolution when problems arise. Volunteers will also provide the school's Behavior Mitigation Team with feedback, input and suggestions, based on their observations, on how to mitigate student behaviors, improve the recess experience for the entire student body, and/or for specific students who need extra behavior support during recess. The schedule for this volunteer opportunity is between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Being able to speak and understand Spanish is a plus, but is not required for this position. AmeriCorps Positions with College Possible College Possible is a growing nonprofit dedicated to coaching low-income students to-and-through college, breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering our workforce. Our rigorously-tested model earns top-of-field results that have helped 98 percent of students served earn admission to college and supported nearly 80 percent through graduation. A 2011 Harvard study found that the program more than doubles a student's chance of enrolling in a four-year college. As an AmeriCorps organization, College Possible is recruiting college graduates to serve for one year to help make a college degree and college success possible for low-income students. Info Session Next Week!  Thursday, October 15th, 2:30-4:00pm A learning abroad experience will enhance your understanding of psychology through course work, internships or cross-cultural interactions encountered every day while you live and travel in a new country. Where can you go? What will you do there? How will that count toward your psychology degree? Come find out! Tuesday, October 7th 1:00-2:30pm. We're Hiring a Student Office Assistant!  The Psychology Advising unit will be hiring a new Student Office Assistant to start soon. We are ideally looking for a freshman or sophomore psychology student who would be interested in remaining in this role long-term. The office assistant is responsible for: communication to psychology majors regarding program information, administrative duties in the office, and participation in staff meetings, among others. Come get your questions answered! This workshop, hosted by CLA Career Services, will provide you with tips for applying to law school and information on the application process.  4. Psychology Colloquium by Prof. Mark Snyder: Caring, Concern, & Community Connection  Thursday, October 8th, 3:30pm, N219 Elliott Hall Every year, millions of people around the world give freely of their time and effort to do good for others and for society. Whether they do so through volunteerism and philanthropy, joining community groups and organizations, or participating in social activism and political movements, their activities (known collectively as “pro-social action”) involve stepping outside the confines of their own individual interests to demonstrate their caring, concern, and compassion for humanity by working for the common good of their communities and for the benefit of society. To answer the questions of how, when, and why people participate in pro-social action, I will draw on research in psychology that provides new (and often surprising) answers to the questions of why people become involved in doing good works, what sustains their involvement over time, how their participation changes over the stages of their lives, the ways that pro-social action reflects connections between individuals and communities, and how pro-social action builds bridges between the private concerns of citizens and the collective well-being of society. All UMTC students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend this event!  5. Health Careers Fair  Wednesday, October 14th, 1:00-4:00pm, Coffman Great Hall  Thinking about a career in a health profession? Wondering about the options for education in the medical and health fields? Come to the Health Careers Fair and learn about the University's different academic programs leading to a health professional career. Programs representing health degree options not found at the University of Minnesota will also be in attendance. For example: Physicians Assistant, Optometry, etc. Meet with admissions staff from these different health professional and health-related programs and ask them your questions. Spring 2016 Internship Opportunities at Washburn Center for Children Washburn Center for Children is committed to offering families professional therapeutic services to help children experiencing depression, anxiety, behavioral difficulties, trauma or other mental health challenges. We are currently interviewing for unpaid internship positions this spring in our Family Focused program in our facility at: 1100 Glenwood Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55405. The Family Focused Program provides families an intensive combination of in-home therapy and a therapeutic preschool for children. It is designed to decrease the potential for harm to children and to help parents provide a safer, more nurturing environment for their children. During the spring interns in Family Focused volunteer 2 half days a week in the preschool. The schedules that are available include Monday and Wednesday mornings, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Monday and Wednesday afternoons, and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Morning schedules go from 9:00am to 12:30pm and afternoon schedules go from 12:45pm to 4:15pm. Our spring internship placements run from the beginning of January until the end of May.
