Psychology Advising

1. Fall 2015 Drop-in Advising 
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated Drop-in Hours during the academic year. Due to high student demand the first 2 weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available on drop-ins from 8:30-4:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 9:45-4:30 on Thursday. Drop-in hours are a great time to get research contracts signed, and to ask 5-10 minute questions; longer issues will be referred to schedule a full appointment. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect on Tuesday, September 22nd. Please see our website for more information on our Office Hours & Availability. Check the Psych Scoop each week for possible change in availability.

5. Community Involvement Fair THIS Thursday, September 17th!

You can make a difference! This free event gives students (grad and undergrad) a chance to learn about Twin Cities volunteer and internship opportunities. Talk to representatives from more than 90 local organizations to find a position that matches your major or interests. Learn about volunteer and internship positions in fields such as: Youth Education and Mentoring, ELL/ESL Tutoring, Environment, Animal Rights, Healthcare / Public Health, Law / Criminal Justice, Housing / Homelessness, Refugee and Immigrant Communities, Political Organizing / Public Policy, Family Services / Family Violence, the Arts, GLBT Communities, Women and Gender issues. 6. International Student Fair Prep Workshops

Workshops are being offered on two different dates; please only attend one session. 7. CLA Internship Fair

Explore internship opportunities with a variety of employers who are hiring and who have internships for CLA students. Many employers will also have full-time and volunteer opportunities available. The CLA Internship Fair is also an opportunity to develop your networking skills and to get advice about internships and full-time professional work. This event is open to all CLA students. 8. El Grito-Cultural Event on Campus 
Friday, September 18th, 5:00-8:00pm, Northrop Plaza 
El Grito celebrates the independence of Mexico and other Latin American countries. Come and support our inclusiveness, celebration, and cultural awareness event Friday September 18th from 5pm to 8pm at the plaza of Northrop. Stop by for free food and music! All are welcome.
9. Cross-Cultural Leadership Retreat 
Friday, October 9th - Saturday, October 10th
ISSS is currently looking for undergraduate students to apply for the Cross-Cultural Leadership Retreat. This retreat is for undergraduate students who want to become more effective in international environments. This interactive, high-energy event becomes a living laboratory of what it takes to work with people from dicipants start friendships with people from all over the world and discover their own leadership potential. A cutting edge cross-cultural leadership model, Personal Leadership, will be used to develop participants' cross cultural skill-set that is needed for professional and personal lives in the 21st century. Students who have completed this retreat were and are currently in various leadership positions, from Welcome Week Leaders, Global Gopher Week Leaders and CAs across campus! Research

11. UGRA's Needed: Social, Political, & Legal Psychology 
Researchers in social, political and legal psychology are looking for undergraduate research assistants to start work during the Fall semester, earning research credit for PSY 5993. RAs will be assisting with coding and data analysis in a study examining racial attitudes, prejudice regulation, and public policy attitudes. Responsibilities include coding and entering data, and attending regular meetings, which will be scheduled based on RA's availability. The position runs during the Fall semester, with the opportunity to continue into the Spring. RAs will be expected to work approximately 6-10 hours per week (may vary across weeks). Strong candidates for this position will be conscientious, bright, motivated students interested in the research process. Preference will be given to students willing to commit to 2 semesters in the lab and to those with previous research experience. If you would like to apply for an RA position, send an email with the subject line “Social, Political and Legal Psychology RA position” to Joe Vitriol (joevitriol@gmail.com), containing the following information: Name, Email, Class Year, Cumulative GPA, Reason for Applying (no more than one sentence, please). Only students who respond accordingly will be sent the full research assistant application and considered for this position.
12. Apply for UROP: Spring 2016 Deadline is October 5th 
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduates either to work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project or to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor. UROP projects are an ideal way to bring together the University's research and teaching missions, and the program is well funded, providing over 100 grants for CLA students every year. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. To learn more about the UROP program, visit www.urop.umn.edu. 13. $500! Apply for a Fall 2015 Psychology Undergraduate Engagement Award! 
Deadline: September 21st, 2015 Are you participating in an internship here or abroad this fall? Or engaging in a learning opportunity that takes you outside of the classroom for a unique experience? The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). Up to two awards of $500 will be offered Fall 2015. The Fall 2015 application deadline is September 21, 2015. Notification Date: October 1, 2015. 14. $1,500! CLA Internship Scholarship Program 
Deadline: October 7, 2015 Do you have an unpaid internship this fall? The $1,500 CLA Internship Scholarship program through CLA Career Services may be what you're looking for. 18. Global Health in Thailand: Humans, Elephants and Disease
Application open until October 1st. Global Health in Thailand: Humans, Elephants, & Disease, is a 3 credit winter break program, but combines two weeks in Thailand with 7 classes, one hour each week, Jan-March. This class, led by health professionals, looks at the relationship between human health and animal health – with a particular focus on tuberculosis in elephants and humans. In Thailand students will visit elephant camps, and learn about the transmission of TB from human to elephant as well as elephant to human. Back in the US, students will meet weekly for seven weeks to further explore TB in Minnesota, hearing from health experts who are actively working on both TB and drug-resistant TB. Finally students will have an opportunity to explore the role that culture plays in zoonotic diseases including discussions of other zoonotic diseases such as ebola, Hantavirus, avian influenza, ovine spongiform encephalitis, rabies and many others. National History Day in Minnesota is looking for undergraduate students interested in history, history education, or community service! The History Day Mentoring Program is a PAID internship where undergraduates have the opportunity to mentor middle school and high school students as they create original projects. 20. Shen Neurolaw Lab Hiring Paid Undergraduate Research Assistant 
Neuroscience + Law = Neurolaw, and the Shen Neurolaw Lab is actively exploring a number of topics at the neurolaw intersection. The Lab, directed by Dr. Francis Shen, McKnight Land-Grant Professor and Associate Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota, is looking to hire a part-time undergraduate research assistant for the Fall 2015 semester. The research tasks will involve several empirical research projects related to psychology, neuroscience, and law. No previous exposure to law or legal research is required for this position, but preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence. Hours and hourly compensation will be arranged based on availability and experience. 21. Paid Undergraduate Research Assistant Positions in Chicago Longitudinal Study 
The Chicago Longitudinal Study (CLS) is seeking undergraduate research assistants (URAs) to start immediately. Since 1985, the CLS has been following up with a group of 1,500 low-income individuals who attended Kindergarten in Chicago Public Schools. Intervention group members attended the Child-Parent Center (CPC) Program, the oldest federally funded extended early childhood intervention. Previous results have been published in top scientific journals and have informed educational policy at the local and national levels. They also enabled the project's team to win a $15 million U.S. Department of Education grant to expand the CPC Program across the Midwest. More information is available on the project's website: http://www.cehd.umn.edu/icd/research/cls/ Follow-up surveys are currently being conducted with CLS participants, who are in their mid-30s. URAs will locate contact information for participants using a variety of platforms (e.g., online databases, email, phone) and conduct phone interviews. This is an excellent opportunity to learn new research skills, and about early childhood interventions and social policy.This position is paid. URAs are asked to work a minimum of 10 hours per week, with the option to work up to 20 hours per week.
