5.The Other Side of Domestic Violence

When we hear “domestic violence”, most of us are conditioned to think of intimate partner violence. However, what happens when the domestic violence is being committed by children toward their parents and siblings? The results of a study exploring this topic will be presented in a discussion, The Other Side of Domestic Violence: A Community Discussion of Parent- and – sibling Directed Aggression Among Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence, with researchers from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota (Canan Karatekin and Michelle Brown). Topics will include: the nature of children’s aggression and mothers’ responses, health problems faced by the mothers and children, the paradox of children being both victimizers and victims, and ways in which advocates, professionals, and concerned community members can help. Please join us Friday March 13th as we seek to understand how we can support mothers facing domestic violence from both sides. This discussion will be held at the Harriet Tubman Center (3111 First Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55408).

12.HECUA's summer-term course, "Race in America: Then and Now"
If you are looking to do something unique with your summer-term, HECUA’s "Race in America: Then and Now" Might be just what you’re looking for. This course has been running for nearly 10 years, but I think it has a renewed relevance and urgency given the events of the past year as we have seen a dramatic shift in public conversation around race in the United States. The tragic deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, John Crawford, Tamir Rice, and other unarmed black men dominated the news, powerful protests forced Americans to confront the twin realities of institutionalized racism and police brutality. Protests spilled onto the highways of major cities, occupied shopping malls, and dominated digital spaces, framing dissent around a single rallying cry, originally posted as a Facebook status by 33 year old Alicia Garza: "Black lives matter." Race in America: Then and Now dives into questions of racial justice in America today, and the continuing role of race in the United States. Students meet with civil rights activists who were active in the 1960s and those who are active now, as well as lawyers, politicians, educators, and youth. Field experiences open up connections among issues related to education, incarceration, distribution of wealth, health care, housing, employment, and the environment. By the end of the month, students have a profound understanding of the Civil Rights Movement—its motivations, strategies, successes and failures—and they have also developed ways to make meaningful contributions to their own communities. The course (ID 3574, 6 credits) will run from June 8th to June 29th. It will be based in Jackson, Mississippi, but include multi-day trips to Alabama, Tennessee, and the Gulf Coast (including New Orleans). Go online more information, including application instructions.

10.HECUA's summer-term course, "Race in America: Then and Now"

Go online for more information, including application instructions.

The session will be held on Wednesday, February 11 at 5:00 p.m. in Jones 235. For more information or questions, please feel free to contact Lamar Hylton, Assistant Vice Provost for Student Life.

I learned how to best serve these people using support and assisting them in clarifying their problems and identifying possible solutions. The experience of working directly with people in the community and hearing their stories gave me an understanding of what trauma-informed counseling looks like and how I can best serve my future clients as a therapist some day. Other general roles of a PC include administering medications, providing care for daily activities, preparing meals, and also taking residents on community outings such as movies, concerts, parks, and anything else that interests them. Since there are over 50 houses within ACR, there are some homes that have more medical-based residential care, and others that are more behavioral. The position does require training before being permitted to work at any home, which covers first-aid, CPR, medication administration, how to handle behaviors, and other classes depending on the assigned home. Training can take up to two weeks, but the good news is that all training is paid! ACR Healthcare does require a minimum of 12 hours a week (around two shifts), and we prefer staff to commit for at least 6 months. ACR Healthcare was voted #1 workplace in Minnesota for 2014, and it is a great company to be involved with. We also have an internship program for any employee planning to pursue nursing, pharmacy, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other health-based careers. Any student that is interested in this position can contact Caitlin Fortin via email (fort0191@umn.edu) or phone ((952) 261-7038).
