Psychology Undergraduate Advising will begin its summer availability this Monday, May 14th. We do not hold walk-in hours during summer session, as advisor availability fluctuates. However, we are available to meet with students through appointments. If you would like to meet with an advisor, please submit an Appointment Request Form. Our office remains open during our usual operating hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. We will still be checking and responding to emails frequently, so feel free to contact us with your questions at psyadvis@umn.edu.

Check out the final meeting of the year of the Minnesota Professionals for Psychology Applied to Work (MPPAW) on Tuesday, May 15th. Register for 2012-13 MPPAW membership and attend this meeting for free! Lisa Stevens from PDI Ninth House will be presenting on succession planning. Lisa leads a cross-disciplinary team to develop and integrate cutting edge thinking and tools that help client organizations improve or transform their talent management systems/processes, including succession management, performance management, development, staffing, and rewards. The meeting will be held at Solera in downtown Minneapolis. 5.UGRA NEEDED IN PERSONALITY LAB- START SUMMER & CONTINUE FALL/SPRING
Professor Colin DeYoung's research lab is seeking an Undergraduate Research Assistant (UGRA) beginning this summer and continuing into the Fall and Spring Semesters. The UGRA will be involved with research projects in the area of Personality Psychology. Duties and activities may include but are not limited to: recruiting participants, running participants in research studies, data management and analysis, and active participation in lab meetings. UGRAs are expected to commit to an average of 9 hours of work per week, attend lab meetings, work independently on assigned tasks, and take initiative in communicating with members of the research lab. UGRAs will be required to register for 3 credits of PSY 5993 Directed Research in the Fall and Spring Semesters. Additionally, UGRAs will be required to write an APA-style research paper due at the end of each semester (or other writing project, as appropriate). Eligible candidates are motivated psychology students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, have at least a 3.25 GPA, and must have taken or be concurrently enrolled in the following courses as prerequisites: PSY 1001 and PSY 3001W (preferably also PSY 3101, but this is negotiable). Exceptional candidates will have experience in conducting psychological research, SPSS, MediaLab, and E-Prime. Please contact Matt Paffel by July 15th (paff0014@umn.edu) if interested.

If you are looking for a study abroad program that allows you to continue exploring the field of Psychology in a university setting, this may be the program for you! Study at the University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland, an Arcadia program affiliated with the University of Minnesota and the Learning Abroad Center. Students on this program are able to select from a wide array of Psychology courses that may be evaluated for usability within the major*. UCD's School of Psychology also provides students an opportunity to conduct their own research (see past projects here). 5.PSY 3960 (2 CR)--MAY TERM PSYCH COURSE ON THE BILINGUAL EXPERIENCE!
This May Term, the Department of Psychology will be offering a 2 credit PSY 3960 Undergraduate Seminar Course. The topic of this offering is 'The Bilingual Experience.' In this course, students will characterize "bilinguals" from a variety of theoretical perspectives, such as second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, with greater emphasis placed on cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. The emotional and social aspects of the bilingual experience will also be discussed. See the Course Guide for a more detailed description. Topics for PSY 3960 are rarely repeated from semester-to-semester, so take advantage of this particular course while you have the chance. PSY 3960 may be used toward the optional opportunity credits within the PSY Electives--make sure you have not met the maximum allowed from these types of courses. Please refer to your major requirement sheet or contact Psychology Advising if you have questions about how this might apply toward your degree.

8.HOME-BASED PARENTING INTERVENTIONS TO PROMOTE CHILD HEALTH

9.PAID SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION WITH EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT
The Center for Applied Research in Educational Improvement (CAREI) is seeking an undergraduate research assistant (UGRA). The UGRA would work with CAREI researchers at the University of Minnesota to analyze data from two of CAREI's current studies. One study evaluates the development of a K-12 Manadarin Immersion program in three Minnesota school districts. The other study evaluates professional development of art teachers in Minneapolis Public Schools' FACETS (Focus on Arts, Culture and Excellence for Teachers and Students) Project. Both studies are funded by grants through the U.S. Department of Education. The position is for Summer Term. The URGA is expected to start between May 16 and May 22 and continue through the end of August. The position is a paid position covering 15 hours of work per week. Qualifications include a strong background in statistics, research methods, and/or coding survey responses. The Journal of Interpersonal Relations, Intergroup Relations and Identity (JIRIRI) is currently looking for undergraduate students to be part of the editorial board as a reviewer and/or an editor. It is a unique opportunity to acquire experience in the publication process of journal articles and develop one's critical thinking. The Journal of Interpersonal Relations, Intergroup Relations and Identity (JIRIRI) is an international scientific journal in the field of social psychology which is published once a year. 11.STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MCAE MULTICULTURAL KICKOFF IN AUG.
Each year the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence hosts the Multicultural Kickoff, a two day event which helps first-year students make a successful transition to college by building community and identifying academic and cultural supports on campus. Typically 300-400 incoming first year students attend this event and are in small groups led by current student leaders. This year the event is being held on Tuesday, August 28 and Wednesday August 29 and we will need a lot of help to make it a success. That is where you come in! We are looking for students who will be available to help with a variety of activities during the Kickoff - everything from helping with setup, to working with students, to assisting with the resource fair, etc. If you are interested in volunteering for any portion of time, we would like to obtain your contact information now before the semester ends and then in August, we will email you to let you know the times, locations, exact duties, etc. If you are interested in volunteering and will be available to come to campus is late August, please sign up using the MKO Volunteer Interest Form in Google. 12.FULL-TIME LEAD STAFF POSITION AT PUBLIC HEALTH SOLUTIONS
Public Health Solutions (PHS) was founded in 2003 by professionals dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities to live in their own communities. PHS is an Adult Corporate Foster Care provider and PCA provider, licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, contracted to provide corporate foster care services in Anoka County and Hennepin County. PHS presently operates ten corporate foster homes in northeast Minneapolis and southern Anoka County and an Adult Day Services Center in Columbia Heights. The individuals supported by PHS have a variety of needs including serious and persistent mental illness and acquired brain injuries. Many of these individuals also have significant medical needs, behavioral challenges, as well as chemical dependency, which are addressed in the context of a safe and appropriate home environment. PHS believes that proper management of co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic illness greatly improves individual's mental health and stability. We work closely with client teams and family members in early interventions to avoid discharging clients from our programs. We design and implement behavior intervention strategies in conjunction with client teams to achieve more functional behavior. We practice a harm reduction approach to chemical dependency. PHS is currently hiring a full-time Lead Staff position. In addition to providing direct care to PHS clients, job responsibilities include: Supervise Direct Care Staff; plan and implement client activities; manage household budget; menu planning, grocery shopping, and food preparation; manage client finances; arrange client medical appointments; monitor client medication; write monthly client reports; submit monthly household reports; develop and maintain staff schedule; direct monthly staff meetings; participate in Lead Staff meetings; other duties as assigned. RESOURCE is a multicultural nonprofit organization that operates over 50 specialized programs in the areas of employment and training, chemical health, and mental health. The VISTA member will be working in the employment and training divisions of RESOURCE. Here RESOURCE has designed and implemented numerous programs for jobseekers with unique needs including very low-income single working mothers, women in urgent need of employment, at-risk youth, teen parents, welfare recipients, low-income single fathers, youth and adult offenders, veterans, and new Americans. The available VISTA position will be supporting RESOURCE's Sectoral Employment Initiative in the Healthcare Industry, which assists low income single parents through job training, job placement, and wage advancement. Employers' skill needs are increasing. This position focuses on projects that enables low-income single parent jobseekers to increase their skills through community based training and higher education. Primary duties include: Research and contact healthcare employers, gathering information on employment, benefits, and other pertinent facts regarding their workforce development needs; present information on RESOURCE's Sectoral Employment Initiative and the opportunities for business involvement to potential business partners and mentors; identify internships and job shadowing opportunities for participants; design a volunteer tutoring program to support single parents in the program to successfully complete training and prepare for the Accuplacer exam; assist with new MNSCU Articulation Agreements process; develop a Toolkit for use by RESOURCE employment specialists, participants, and the wider community; assist with analysis of program outcomes (e.g., placement and wage rates) by race.
