1. Summer and Fall Research Opportunities on Child and Family Resilience!
Our lab studies how children and families who face adversity are nonetheless able to achieve resilience and have positive outcomes. We are hoping to find multiple research assistants who can start sometime this summer (preferably July but August is okay too!) and continue to the end of fall semester. We are happy to help you get fall course credit for any summer/fall work you do or if you prefer, help you get Honors Experience. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have about these positions! Ours is a large lab, and you'll work alongside multiple undergrads and grad students, and if interested, attend larger lab meetings. For individuals interested in eventually attending grad school, we hope this will give you experience to learn about the grad school process. Project #1 (multiple openings) - coding: Mastery motivation is conceptualized as a drive within all infants and young children to master their environment. It is believed that for children growing up in conditions of adversity such as homelessness, possessing this drive to explore, to manipulate objects and to demonstrate agency can help them achieve better outcomes and show resilience. We have videotapes of young children interacting with various fun toys for several minutes. We would like to have RAs code every 10 seconds of these videos on items such as "task orientation," "persistence," and "positive emotion," among others. You will receive extensive training on the coding process, and ongoing support throughout the project. Project #2 (multiple openings) - Data Entry: Our lab is currently engaged in a large data collection with parents and children living in conditions of adversity. We are collecting data about factors that can contribute to resilience and positive outcomes in these individuals, such as executive function skills or mental health. We are seeking multiple individuals to assist with data entry for this project. You will receive training and support throughout the process. If you would like to apply, please send us the following: 1. Resume, 2. Unofficial (free) Transcript (you can find this at Onestop, save as a PDF for free, and send the file), 3. In the Subject Line, please write "Application for Project 1 - Coding" or "Application for Project 2 - Data Entry" depending on which project you are interested in, and 3. 1-2 paragraphs explaining why you would be interested in this position (you can include it in the body of your e-mail). Please send the materials as soon as possible, and by June 26th at the latest, to ramak032@umn.edu and aefiat@umn.edu.
