1.PIB COLLOQUIUM ON SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

The Department of Psychology is hosting a colloquium speaker from the Personality, Individual Differences, and Behavior Genetics area. Michael Neale, Ph.D., Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University with present on 'Substance Use Disorders: Phenotypes, Genotypes and Putative Endophenotypes.' The measurement of liability to substance abuse and dependence is hampered by many factors. First, symptoms of abuse and dependence cannot be observed among individuals who have not initiated use, but simply scoring such symptoms as absent, and individuals as having low liability to those symptoms makes unlikely assumptions. Second, patterns of substance abuse symptoms and criteria across development may not be well-characterized by currently popular factor, latent class, or growth mixture models. Some alternatives such as regime-switching may prove more suitable for longitudinal data. Finally, although direct measures of the brain, such as those provided by neuroimaging studies, are attractive as possible endophenotypes for substance dependence outcomes, it can prove difficult to assess whether substance use affects brain structure, or vice versa. The potential of twin data to resolve these alternative hypotheses will be considered, and illustrated with measures of nicotine use and cortical thickness measured in twins from the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging. The purpose of this day is to promote awareness about the sometimes profound impact that suffering from, living with, and recovering from mental health issues have on college students. There will be a feature display titled "Don't Sit In Silence", spoken word performances, and more. Please consider making this day as successful as possible by sharing your personal experience with mental health by submitting a story, volunteering the day or the event, or just stopping by to decorate a T-shirt. 4.SUMMER UGRA POSITIONS IN THE MINNESOTA TWIN REGISTRY- FOR CREDIT
Undergraduate students are needed to help with research-related collection in the Minnesota Twin Registry under Dr. Robert Krueger. This is an excellent 3-4 credit research opportunity for those interested in working within personality, psychopathy, and twin research while still having a flexible schedule. Qualified candidates would demonstrate good academic standing with 3.3 GPA or higher; customer service experience (strongly recommended: telephonic skills); experience with excel, SPSS, and data entry. Strongly recommended classes to have taken include: behavioral genetics, research methods and/or statistics. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 1) updating and maintaining registry records; 2) contacting registry twins by multiple forms of medium (email, phone, social networking); 3) managing participant relations (participant requests, grievances, info); 4) Data entry; 5) locating registry twins' contact information. 5.SUMMER/FALL INTERN & VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE POSITIONS AT TUBMAN
Tubman is currently recruiting students for a number of internship and volunteer opportunities starting either this summer or fall. Here are some of the fantastic opportunities: Youth Advocate- work with children and youth who have experienced family violence. Promote family healing through creation of a fun environment, provision of activities, and respite childcare; Women's Advocate- provide supportive services to women currently living in one of our domestic violence shelters; Transitional Housing Advocate- provide supportive services to families living in Tubman's transitional apartments; Community Advocate- provide supportive counseling, crisis intervention, resources and referrals to individuals who call or walk into Tubman sites; Youth & Young Adult Assistant (YAYA)- assist individuals between the ages of 13-24 who are survivors of dating violence, assault, stalking, or domestic violence. Help them access resources and attain goals of safety, stability, and a violence-free life. Training for summer positions starts on May 19th, so students need to contact Tubman as soon as possible. CYFC is an intermediary organization in the UMN Extension that connects research, teaching, policy, and community practice to organizations that, in turn, apply that information in direct service to children and families. This position offers the unique opportunity to work with a wide range of activities related to connecting research and practice in children's mental health. The intern will provide assistance related to research, communication, and event planning and marketing, and have the opportunity to work with staff to identify one major area of focus of interest to the student. Student interns engage with professionals and faculty members in order to: conduct literature searches on topics related to children's mental health; assist with training event activities (presenter preparation, marketing, evaluation); assist teams of professionals working to promote public engagement and close the research-practice gap; complete written and oral communications activities. Desired is a committed individual with excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated initiative and dedication to children's mental health; someone who enjoys working in an environment where every day brings different tasks and activities, enjoys both team and autonomous work, and is committed to working with diverse populations of community members, researchers and practitioners. 10.URBAN ED MATH TUTORING FELLOWSHIP--FT JOB FOR GRADUATING SENIORS
Match Corps: Merrimack Valley is a full-time, 10.5-month urban education math tutoring fellowship in two high schools in the Merrimack Valley (New England). The program is hiring 50 smart, idealistic, relentless people to work during the 2012-2013 school year. Each Fellow works during the school day with two students at a time for five periods a day, and will have a personal caseload of 12 students all year long. Fellows not only will drive student achievement by providing individualized instruction, but will also build personal and meaningful relationships with urban students and their families during this pioneer year of service. Fellows will receive a modest living stipend ($1428 per month, for 10 ½ months); full health benefits; a transportation reimbursement of $60/month; free registration for the Massachusetts Educator Licensure Tests in High School Math and Communication ($250); and the lifelong appreciation of the 12 students they serve, and their families. 11.FT RESEARCH POSITION: I/O APPLIED TO CLINICAL PRACTICE IN COMMUNITIES
Gregory Aarons, Ph.D. of the University of California San Diego Psychiatry Department and Child & Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) is currently seeking a research assistant to work on his research studies regarding implementation of evidence-based practice. The lab investigates what it takes to effectively implement clinical practices in community-based settings. We focus on organization and policy factors that affect whether clinical interventions are used effectively with clients and patients. The studies aim to identify and support the organizational factors that improve evidence-based practice implementation, including organizational culture, organizational climate, and leadership. The research also focuses on adaptation of evidence-based practice for health, mental health, and social service settings. Under supervision, the incumbent will work as a Research Assistant for the Child & Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry. The main duties and responsibilities will include: coordinating research participant retention and tracking, preparing and administering survey instruments, managing longitudinal data using SPSS and web-based data collection programs, conducting data coding and analysis, and assisting with preparing reports and presentations. Other duties will be assigned as needed. The ideal candidate will have college level coursework completed in psychology, psychiatry, or a related field or equivalent knowledge or experience, possess knowledge of public sector mental health and social service organizations, and have demonstrated experience managing survey data and performing basic descriptive analyses using SPSS or SAS software. Coursework and/or research experience in Industrial-Organizational Psychology is preferred. The position is full-time, starting salary ranging from $2,560 - $2,760 per month. Full benefits available. The Lead Direct Care Counselor is to work directly with persons served in the implementation of the written Individual Support Plans, documenting progress and response to program services, and ensuring the safety and well-being of each person. 1.TAKING PSY 3902W? NEW PSY 5993 COURSE ALTERNATE FOR B.S. STUDENTS
Senior Psychology B.S. majors registered for PSY 3902W Major Project have an alternative option for the required concurrent enrollment in PSY 4/5993. In the past, the research requirement has strictly been fulfilled through volunteering in a research lab of a faculty member as outlined on our webpage. Beginning Fall 2012, a specific PSY 5993 section (-042) will be offered in a course-style format. This option provides an opportunity for students to work individually or in small groups to complete a research study with archival data rather than participating in the current lab of a faculty. Fall 2012's section will be broadly applicable to clinical psychology. The research will consider environmental processes that may be of relevance to the development of psychopathology. In this lab, students will be investigating various ways in which discrete emotions are shaped by others, and what individual differences may be linked with psychopathology, personality characteristics, ethnicity, etc. The course will be taught by Bonnie Klimes-Dougan, Ph.D. and will be held Tuesdays from 9:05 am - 11:00 am. To enroll in this unique PSY 5993 section, please contact Psychology Undergraduate Advising at psyadvis@umn.edu including your name, student ID number, and interest in enrolling in the PSY 5993 course option. We will verify that you are a B.S. major enrolled in PSY 3902W, and provide a permission number for an open seat--there is a limited availability, so act now if interested and have a back-up plan in mind if seats fill.

Enroll in this 2 credit course for Fall semester! ID 3201 Career Planning teaches advanced job-search strategies like marketplace research, resume writing, networking, interviewing and more. You earn credit for completing things you should be doing anyway! The course is aimed at juniors and seniors. It is not usable toward your 36 credits in Psychology, but may be applied toward general upper-division outside the major credits. See CLA Career Service course descriptions for more information.

8.'PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE' FILM SCREENING PLUS Q & A

This documentary is timely and critical for all educators and those involved in education. The documentary 'Precious Knowledge' interweaves the stories of students in the Mexican-American Studies Program at Tucson High School. The filmmakers spent an entire year in the classroom filming this innovative social justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students who become engaged, informed, and active in their communities. Along with their harsh anti-immigrant stance, Arizona lawmakers recently passed a bill giving unilateral power to the State Superintendent to abolish Ethnic Studies classes such as these. 'Precious Knowledge' provides an insider's perspective to a historic battle over civil rights as the student leaders in Tucson High fight to save their classes. Following this free public screening, one of the documentary's featured students, Crystal Terriquez, will participate in a Q & A session. 9.HELP DEVELOP ASSESSMENT FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS THIS SATURDAY!
Dr. Ted Christ and his research team are developing a computer adaptive reading test for students in grades 6-12 as part of a joint project between the University of Minnesota's Department of Educational Psychology and the United States Department of Education-Office of Special Education. As part of this project, the lab is conducting an item writing workshop on Saturday, April 21st from 9am to 2pm in the Education Sciences Building (alternate date, April 28th depending on participant schedules) and are looking for talented undergraduates and graduate students from a variety of content areas who can participate. Experience writing assessment items for junior and senior high school students is preferred. Participants will work in small groups to generate reading comprehension assessment items for students in grades 6-12. Lunch will be provided and students will be compensated a $50 gift card. There will be opportunities for some participants to continue as paid item-writers over the next few months. 10.SEEKING UGRAs FOR SOCIAL PSYCH LAB ON EMOTIONAL REACTIONS
We're looking for research assistants to help with piloting and running a study examining individuals' physiological, self-reported, and displayed emotional reactions in response to an emotion-eliciting stimuli. Given the theoretical focus of the project, those interested in relationships may also find the project interesting. Working on this project would involve such tasks as assisting with organizing project materials (e.g., scripts, instructions), working out the kinks in the procedure, and running pilot participants. Full-scale data collection will begin in the fall semester. RAs will be trained on all necessary equipment and procedures. RA's should be comfortable with interacting with participants and giving clear and detailed instructions. Research assistants who can commit to at least 2 semesters (summer/fall, fall/spring) will be given priority. Research assistants who can start in the summer will also be given priority. It is absolutely imperative that you are responsible and conscientious in your work. Please contact Jen Fillo (fillo001@umn.edu) for more information, and we can set up a time to meet. 11.UGRAs NEEDED FOR RUNNING ROMANTIC COUPLES THROUGH STUDY
We're looking for two RA's to assist in an ongoing interaction observation study on power and influence in romantic couples. RA's will be running participants through a two and a half hour protocol consisting of multiple discussions about existing issues in their relationship and two collaborative tasks. These sessions will primarily be run on weekday evenings (between 4pm- 9pm), but occasionally RA's may need to run sessions on weekends. In addition to running ~2 sessions per week, RA's will attend at 45 min weekly lab meeting. RA's should feel comfortable working with adults from the community and reading/giving instructions while videotaped. Ideally, RA's would be able to stay on for the fall semester. 12.UGRAs NEEDED FOR ASSISTANCE IN LAB ON POWER & INFLUENCE IN COUPLES
We're looking for one RA to also assist in an ongoing interaction observation study on power and influence in romantic couples. This RA would be in charge of checking the email account for an ongoing study and responding to emails from potential participants. Second, they would be conducting literature searches (finding and organizing articles) for a couple new projects starting up this summer. Other tasks may be added based on the interest and competence of the RA. The RA would be expected to check the email account at least twice a day, plus come into the lab to work 4-6 hours per week. Strong candidates will be highly organized and conscientious and comfortable reading/summarizing psychology journal articles. This position is expected to continue into the fall, although an RA who does a good job would be likely to be recruited into a new position in the fall if interested. Are you a declared Psychology major who has successfully completed an approved statistics equivalent to PSY 3801 at another institution? Do you intend to enroll in PSY 3001W fall semester? If you meet these criteria, please read on. Our registration system only recognizes several approved equivalents as meeting the stats prerequisite for PSY 3001W, and you may be blocked from enrolling in open seats. To increase your chances of securing an open seat for this course, you will need to follow these instructions: 1) Email psyadvis@umn.edu at least three days prior to your registration start time. Psychology Undergraduate Advising holds designated walk-in hours for 5 - 10 minute questions. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified walk-in times and the scope of what can be covered in them. Questions that may be addressed during walk-ins include: research contract signatures, policy verification, and resource referrals (note: some topics in these categories may be unique and require an appointment). If your question takes more than 10 minutes or requires a certain level of preparation (such as determining what you have left in your major), you will be asked to schedule an appointment with an advisor for a later date. This 3-credit course is designed as an introduction to the theory and practice of counseling. It is intended for non-majors who may use counseling skills in a professional capacity or for those who may be considering a career in counseling. In this course you will become acquainted with counseling theory, learn basic counseling skills, gain understanding of multicultural counseling, and learn strategies for working with crisis victims. Instructional methods will include lecture, group interaction, and practice. The course is for graduate students and upper-level undergrad. This course is not applicable to the Psychology major requirements, but may be used toward general coursework and help in personal and career development. 7.GWSS 3415: FEMINIST PERSPECTIVES ON SEXUAL ASSAULT/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies Department will be offering a Fall 2012 course titled Feminist Perspectives on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. This course focuses on the history of and contemporary thinking about activism, social change, public policies, and legal remedies directed toward sexual assault and domestic violence in the US, particularly from feminist perspectives. It will examine these topics through asking unique questions, relevant readings, films, site visits, and guest speakers including the executive director of the non-profit courtroom monitoring organization, WATCH, and the head of the Minneapolis Police Department Sex Crimes Unit. There is a new scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students! The International Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Scholarship is designed to promote learning abroad opportunities to undergraduate students by providing critical funding to students enrolled in select credit-bearing learning abroad programs involving a research project. 3.ART, HEALTH, & SOCIETY MAY TERM COURSE (ARTS 3490)
Want to combine an interest in arts with helping people? Take the May Term course ARTS 3490: Workshop in Art Section 003 "Art, Health, & Society." The course is a pilot program that will apply to a future major/certificate in Art & Health and is also a prerequisite for the new Artist-in-Residence Program at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital. In the course, students will learn ways to apply the arts within the healthcare industry. Various artistic media are explored in relation to current topics in healthcare such as communication and artmaking, medical humanities, and the role of art in psychology, anthropology, education, and history. 4.DNCE 3334/5334 INTRODUCTION TO DANCE MOVEMENT THERAPY--FALL 2012
Dance/movement therapy is a mind/body form of psychotherapy that uses body and movement to facilitate psychological goals of self-awareness growth and change. No previous movement experience is required for participation in this course. The course is appropriate for anyone interested in the relationships among body, movement, creative expression, and psychology and is particularly relevant to the fields of Psychology, Education, Music Therapy, Art and Drama Therapy, Counseling, Family Social Studies, Social Work and Movement Studies. The next Psi Chi/Psychology Club meeting will be on Wednesday, April 4th, from 3:00 - 4:00pm in N639 Elliott. We are pleased to have Professor Randy Fletcher, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology, as a guest speaker. He will be sharing very useful information about the graduate school admissions process, what departments are looking for in applicants, and what you can do to be competitive candidate. If you are considering grad school, this meeting is for you! Also, there will be free ice cream! You do not have to be a member of Psi Chi to attend-- all are welcome! 12.YOUTH PROBATION MENTOR OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS MAJORING IN PSYCH
This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with youth development! Hennepin County Juvenile Probation Mentors for Success is actively recruiting college students to participate in its volunteer program and has current oppenings. Mentors will have the opportunity to meet with youth on probation and have a positive impact on a mentee's life. Mentors should be able to share their academic experiences about working towards and being in college. Currently, we are recruiting males and females who can be committed to having a positive impact on a mentee for one year. Through this experience, mentors will gain insight on different communities and cultures and expand their knowledge of the juvenile justice system. The program strives to provide quality mentoring by supporting its mentors through training, activity, and match support. 13.SUMMER EMPLOYMENT WORKING WITH YOUTH AS RESIDENTIAL ADVISORS!
TRiO Upward Bound is hiring a dynamic team of individuals to help run the summer precollege program. Roughly 8 Residential Advisors (RAs) are needed to live in the University of Minnesota residential hall (Middlebrook), supervise UB students, plan, coordinate, and chaperone evening experiential events, and mentor high school youth on college readiness. 14.STUDY & INTERN FOR PSY CREDIT IN FLORENCE THIS FALL! 4/15 DEADLINE
Take a semester in Italy that you will never forget! Italian language is NOT a necessity for all experiences, and you may even work toward PSY major requirements! Coursework can be taken from cross-cultural psychology, art, economics, business, art history, photography, and more. All courses utilize Florence as a classroom with long study tours to Sicily (5-days) and Milan (3-days). Three-credit internships are also available, including this opportunity for psychology majors and minors. Students can earn up to 6 credits toward their Psychology requirements for both Cross-Cultural Psych and the internship experience; to see how these may work toward your degree progress, please meet with a Psychology Advisor.
