Sponsored by the Japanese government, the JET Program offers you the opportunity to engage in intercultural exchange through language teaching in the Japanese public education system or by working in a local Japanese government office. Get on the path to teaching licensure as an undergraduate through DirecTrack to Teaching. The program offers early admission to the College of Education and Human Development's initial licensure program and gives undergraduates early exposure to the culture of teaching and schools. 7.Social Justice Leadership Retreat - Apply Now!
The University of Minnesota offers many opportunities, but few are as meaningful and powerful as the January 18th-20th Social Justice Leadership Retreat (SJLR). The SJLR focuses on developing and fostering diversity and social justice leaders committed to improving the campus climate for all students and working towards a more just and equitable society. The 3 day retreat takes students and facilitators away from campus to explore issues of identity, oppression, and how to make an impact on campus and in the community after the retreat. Over 600 students have attended our retreats over the last nine years and those students are having a powerful impact on campus and in the community using what they learned and the connections they made. 10.Part Time Relief Shift Worker at Division of Indian Work
The Shift Worker will provide on call services for adolescent Boys and Girls residing in our facilities with a shift model, including weekdays, weekends, late nights, and awake overnights. Some of the Shift Worker's tasks will include: provide supervision and safety to youth, assist with case management, document information and daily reports, and communicate with youth and other program staff. The Division of Indian Work provides culturally based support systems to American Indian youth and families, encouraging educational, psychological, social and spiritual growth in a multi-cultural urban environment. "Studentexperience" is a Personal Care Assistant company located in the Twin Cities and Duluth areas. 13.AmeriCorps Promise Fellow - Recruiting Statewide
The Minnesota Alliance With Youth is currently recruiting individuals to serve as AmeriCorps Promise Fellows in various locations across Minnesota. AmeriCorps Promise Fellows serve in schools (middle or high) and community based organizations supporting youth in grades 6-10 in areas of academic support, in and out of school time, and service learning to increase engagement in school and life. Members are supported by a supervisor at the host site, often times the data coach, assistant principal or counselor, or program manager, and part of a student support team to assist students. The Promise Fellow is particularly charged with supporting students with high truancy, behavioral referrals, and/or in need of academic improvements. If you have ever thought of teaching social studies at the secondary level, now is your chance to find out what it takes to apply and be admitted into the U of M's Teacher Licensure program. 10.Aurora Center Hosts Event for Domestic Violence Awareness Event
The Aurora Center for Advocacy & Education invites you to Shattered Glass. Demonstrating the healing power of the arts through spoken word, dramatization, live music and art, Shattered Glass is the story of a woman who disentangles herself from a toxic relationship in order to rediscover, in her words, "the smile of that girl in those pictures they say is me." Shattered Glass is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) activities and events being hosted by TAC during the month of October. The event will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd from 7:00pm-8:30pm in the Whole Music Club in Coffman Union. Refreshments will be provided. 11.Start the Semester Off On the Wrong Foot? LASK 1101 Can Help
If you're having some difficulties this semester, LASK 1101 might be a great B-term course for you. LASK 1101 is a 1-credit, mid-semester course that offers assistance over the 2nd half of the semester to students experiencing academic concerns. In LASK 1101, students receive weekly instruction and the opportunity to consult with students facing similar challenges. This course requires instructor permission to register, and registration closes tomorrow, October 23rd, so interested students should contact the SASS front desk at (612) 624-3323 for a brief phone screening and registration information.

12.Paid Summer Research - Apply for the McNair Scholars Program
The goal of McNair Scholars is to give undergraduate students intensive, faculty-driven research experiences and prepare students for entry into graduate school. This is a 10-week summer research program where students will conduct research with a professor. Often times, students form great relationships with the professors who are then able to write them strong letters of recommendation for graduate school and help them with the grad school application process. Students present their research at a poster sessions held on campus, and receive a $3,000 stipend for their work. The U of M Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate Achievement Program is now accepting applications for summer 2014. The priority application deadline is January 27, 2014. In order to apply, students must meet the following criteria: first generation college student and low income, or from an underrepresented group, have a GPA of 2.75 and above, be a full-time sophomore or junior and be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. Students with a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) focus are strongly encouraged to apply. The Aurora Center for Advocacy & Education invites you to Shattered Glass. Demonstrating the healing power of the arts through spoken word, dramatization, live music and art, Shattered Glass is the story of a woman who disentangles herself from a toxic relationship in order to rediscover, in her words, "the smile of that girl in those pictures they say is me." Shattered Glass is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) activities and events being hosted by TAC during the month of October. If you're having some difficulties this semester, LASK 1101 might be a great B-term course for you. LASK 1101 is a 1-credit, mid-semester course that offers assistance over the 2nd half of the semester to students experiencing academic concerns. 12.Paid Summer Research - Apply for the McNair Scholars Program
The goal of McNair Scholars is to give undergraduate students intensive, faculty-driven research experiences and prepare students for entry into graduate school. This is a 10-week summer research program where students will conduct research with a professor. Often times, students form great relationships with the professors who are then able to write them strong letters of recommendation for graduate school and help them with the grad school application process. Students present their research at a poster sessions held on campus, and receive a $3,000 stipend for their work. The U of M Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate Achievement Program is now accepting applications for summer 2014. The priority application deadline is January 27, 2014. In order to apply, students must meet the following criteria: first generation college student and low income, or from an underrepresented group, have a GPA of 2.75 and above, be a full-time sophomore or junior and be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. Students with a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) focus are strongly encouraged to apply. 5.University Suicide Awareness Prevention (USAP) Meeting This Week
University Suicide Awareness and Prevention (USAP) is a student group that works to make others aware that suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students. They put on several awareness events in hopes of preventing college suicides at the University of Minnesota. This week Thursday, October 17th from 7:00pm-8:30pm (Coffman room 304), there will be pizza, and the group will be talking about upcoming fall events, and having a discussion about the stigma associated with suicide. The U of M Pre-Law Society will be hosting an LSAT Strategy Session in 330 STSS on October 22nd at 5:30pm with their partners from Kaplan Test Prep! Interested in research on Military Families? Interested in work focusing on children, youth and families? This Student Research Assistant position will be working in Dr. Lynne Borden's research lab. Her lab focuses on utilizing research and outreach strategies to enhance the capacity of those that work with, and on behalf of, children, youth, and families. Many of her projects address issues around youth development, early childhood education, deployment, and military families. As a Research Assistant, you will work with our team and provide a variety of support including: assisting with literature searches and reviews, collecting information on various topics, conducting data entry, developing and maintaining a filing system and/or electronic database for storing materials, students may also be involved in helping to organize events such as symposiums, conferences, or meetings with collaborators (10-15 hours/week). Qualifications for the position include: strong organizational, communication, and research skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office products, well-developed research and writing skills, ability to conduct literature searches using University library and other academic databases, ability to work with deadlines and handle diverse work tasks, ability to work both collaboratively and independently. ALTERNATIVES FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM, INC. is currently hiring part time Living Skills Instructors. This position involves assisting and teaching adults affected by autism and developmental delay in the areas of personal care & grooming, domestic skills, community integration, leisure & recreation, adaptive communication, and management/modification of maladaptive behaviors. Applicants must have at least 44 college credits complete, and must be able to fill ALL of the following shifts: AMs (6am-9am), PMs (2pm-10pm), Overnights (11pm-7am, two per month), and Every other weekend. Applicants must be fluent in English and able to work as an effective team member in an energetic, physically demanding environment. Alternatives for People with Autism, Inc. is located in Brooklyn Park, and employees must have reliable transportation to work. $500 per semester scholarships are available to all employees who complete 90 Day Orientation, work at least 24 hours per week, and are enrolled in a full time academic program.
