2.Psychology Colloquium: Can Consuming Narrative Fiction Create Empathy?
On Friday, October 3rd, from 11:00am-12:30pm in N639 Elliott Hall, the Department of Psychology will host Raymond A. Mar, Ph.D. Department of Psychology, York University to present as part of the Psychology Fall Colloquium Series. Most of us engage with fictional narratives on a daily basis, be it a novel, film, or favorite television show. In doing so, we often imagine the inner worlds of others who are quite different from ourselves, which may provide an avenue for developing perspective-taking and empathy towards others. In this talk Dr. Mar will provide a critical overview of the available research on whether exposure to narrative fiction can improve our capacity to understand other people. This includes work based on various methodological approaches, including neuroscience, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology and individual differences. A list of the upcoming Colloquium speakers can be found under "upcoming events" on the Departmental website.

3.Psychology Colloquium: Inequity, Social Class and Self
On Monday, October 6th, from 10:00am-11:30am in N639 Elliott Hall, the Department of Psychology will host Hazel Rose Markus, Professor in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, to present as part of the Psychology Fall Colloquium Series. The U.S. is increasingly marked by inequality and divided along social class lines. The divide is evident in what we eat for dinner, how we parent, how we vote, and how long we live. In this talk, Hazel will integrate many of the powerful and previously unexamined psychological consequences of social class, suggesting that societal rank has its influence on behavior through one's experience of self. In North American settings, those with higher rank (whether measured or manipulated) tend to experience themselves as independent selves--as separate from others, as expressing and promoting their own interests, choices and goals, and as influencing and controlling social interactions. Those with lower rank tend to experience themselves as interdependent selves--as connected with others, as responsive to the social situation and to others' goals, emotions and needs, and as adjusting and deferring to others in interaction. The more unequal we become and the more different our selves become, the more societal dysfunction we will experience. Addressing inequality in health, education, and political engagement requires policies and practices that bridge these socioculturally shaped differences in self. A list of the upcoming Colloquium speakers can be found under "upcoming events" on the Departmental website.

21.Positions with ACR Healthcare
ACR is currently in need of employees for a direct care position titled "Program Counselor," which involves working with individuals that have physical/developmental disabilities. Some roles of a Program Counselor include escorting residents to appointments, which could be for an annual check-up, physical therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, and other possibilities. Other general roles of a PC include administering medications, providing care for daily activities, preparing meals, and also taking residents on community outings such as movies, concerts, parks, and anything else that interests them. Since there are over 50 houses within ACR, there are some homes that have more medical-based residential care, and others that are more behavioral. The position does require training before being permitted to work at any home, which covers first-aid, CPR, medication administration, how to handle behaviors, and other classes depending on the assigned home. Training can take up to two weeks, but the good news is that all training is paid! ACR Healthcare does require a minimum of 12 hours a week (around two shifts), and we prefer staff to commit for at least 6 months. ACR Healthcare was voted #1 workplace in Minnesota for 2014, and it is a great company to be involved with. We also have an internship program for any employee planning to pursue nursing, pharmacy, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other health-based careers. Any student that is interested in this position can contact Caitlin Fortin via email (fort0191@umn.edu) or phone (952) 261-7038.

1.Drop-In Hours for Psychology Undergraduate Advising
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated drop-in hours during the academic year. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified drop-in times.

8.Research Opportunity with the Adolescent Depression Study
Dr. Karina Quevedo is currently looking for undergraduate students interested in gaining volunteer experience in her lab in the Department of Psychiatry! About the Lab: Depression and the Adolescent Self (DAS) is a neuroimaging and psychoendocrine study designed to better understand adolescent depression. It was inspired by: 1) research showing that our identity forms during adolescence; 2) that poor formation of a self-identity is linked to depression; and 3) that intense sensitivity to social rejection can trigger depression. Therefore, DAS focuses on the brain function of adolescents - with and without depression - while they think about themselves during an fMRI scan. Who We Want: We are looking for highly motivated students with an interest in neuroscience and child and psychopathology research. Volunteers may talk with families and make phone calls regularly, so strong interpersonal and phone skills are required. Basic duties include data entry and basic clerical tasks. Students with high analytical and/or computer skills will be encouraged to directly learn to process brain imaging data and we will help them to produce a poster after about one 1/2 year with the lab. This is usually an excellent way to pave your way to graduate or medical school applications. There is opportunity to gain directed research credit. Students should be in good academic standing and be willing to devote 5-12 hours a week to this study. If interested, please email the Research Coordinator a copy of your resume and unofficial transcript: Hannah Scott.

Psychology Undergraduate Advising would like to welcome you to campus for the start of Fall 2014! As you get back in to gear, keep our office's resources in mind. Some of you are returning from exciting summer experiences such as study abroad or internships or, for others, the less-exciting coursework and GREs. No matter what your summer consisted of, we can likely help you in moving forward! Advisors in our office are available for appointments year-round to assist with psychology course-selection and major progress, career and graduate school preparation and selection, and general engagement to make the most out of your time here. To schedule an appointment, fill our our appointment request form online. We look forward to seeing you and wish you the best of luck in the coming semester!

2.Fall 2014 Drop-In Hours for Psychology Undergraduate Advising
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated drop-in hours during the academic year. However, due to the high student demand the first two weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available from on drop-ins from 8:00am- 4:30pm. Drop-ins are a great time to have research contracts signed, and ask 5-10 minute questions; longer issues will be referred to schedule an appointment. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect Monday, September 15th. This semester's drop-in hours for the Psychology Advisors can be found on our website. While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds drop-in hours once a week and cannot address walk-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified drop-in times.
