Autonomy supportive parenting is characterized by behaviors such as allowing a child to choose, praising a child's efforts, providing hints and suggestions when needed, and structuring a task in a way that provides optimal challenge for the child (not too easy or too difficult). Autonomy supportive parenting has been show to predict the development of self-control skills in young children. For this project, you will be coding videos of homeless parent-child dyads working on a puzzle together for 5 minutes. Coding the videos includes transcribing the speech between the mother and child and then rating autonomy support, controlling behaviors, and laissez-faire behaviors (i.e., uninvolved) across four scales. This semester, you will be trained to become reliable on the coding system, and once reliable you would help code the videos. To Apply: Please contact Rebecca Distefano (diste020@umn.edu). Include Name, Email, Class Year, GPA, and Reason for applying (no more than a few sentences, please) in the body of the email and “Undergraduate Research Interest” in the subject line.

This is an advanced coding system, and you will receive extensive training on the coding process in order to achieve reliability with the anchor coder, as well as ongoing support throughout the project. Your input into how the coding process can be modified and improved will also be welcomed. Previous psychology or child development research experience is a plus. However, we are primarily seeking individuals who are very interested to learn about this topic area and have a strong attention to detail. To apply, please send the following: A. Resume, B. Unofficial transcript (you can download this for free at One Stop), c. 1-2 paragraphs explaining why you are interested in this position (you can include it in the body of your email). 11. Philosophy Camp
Philosophy Camp is the affectionate nickname given by students to the University of Minnesota course Philosophy 4326/5326—Lives Worth Living: Questions of Self, Vocation, and Community (4 credits, 3 weeks). A small group of students and instructors meet daily, from May 22nd through June 12th, and create a residential living-learning community experience at a retreat center on the prairie outside of Windom, MN. Participants in this course gain a fresh perspective on questions of self, vocation, education, sustainability, health, and community while enjoying simple living on the prairie of southwestern Minnesota. Students and instructors learn to investigate their own and others' responses to questions such as these: What is an authentic self? What is my work in the world? What kind of community do I want to have around me? What do I bring to my relationships and community? It’s a fantastic experience to add to your undergraduate (or graduate!) time, and is a great opportunity to make friends and learn about yourself.
Philosophy Camp is now taking applications for the upcoming 2015 May-Term. Visithttp://www.philosophycamp.org or email us at pcamp@umn.edu for information on this course including application process, cost and financial aid info. If you're ready to apply, just download an application here! Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis until the course is full.
