1.A Call for Artists: Contribute to Psychology Advising's New Community Space!
Psychology Undergraduate Advising is seeking art submissions for display in our new undergraduate community space. Submissions will go through a screening process, with selected pieces being displayed in the new advising corridor (N120 -N108) for the academic year. Submissions should be a minimum of 8" by 8" and can be done in any medium that is able to be hung. Bring submissions to N108 Elliott Hall. Displayed pieces will be selected on a rolling basis until space is filled. Contact psyadvis@umn.edu with any questions--we look forward to seeing your work!

Come to hear a Direct Services Advocate from The Aurora Center talk about counseling experiences, training, and education they have received while working with The Aurora Center. They are willing to answer any questions you may have about The Aurora Center and how you can become involved as well! Also, get the inside scoop on all your psychology classes from your peers who have taken them! We will be sharing descriptions and experiences of courses, hopefully helping with upcoming registration decisions. Snacks will be provided and all are welcome. There will be some time at the end of the meeting to ask questions and sign up for volunteer opportunities. There will be free Dominos pizza and pop. 6.Two-Year Fellowships for Spring 2013 (or earlier) Grads!
The Marcus Autism Center, in conjunction with the Emory University School of Medicine and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, is offering three fellowships: the Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience, the Simons Fellowship in Design Engineering, and the Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience. The training experience for the Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience will involve developing methods for the analysis of visual scanning and eye-tracking data, computational models of visual salience, and data visualization techniques, all with the aim of advancing the understanding of autism and efforts at early diagnosis. The training experience for the Simons Fellowship in Design Engineering will involve developing innovative design solutions to answer experimental research questions. These solutions offer an opportunity to explore human factors engineering, product prototyping, and the design of environments for neuroscience research. The training experience for the Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience will primarily involve daily activities related to eye-tracking research, including operation of experimental equipment and paradigms, contact with infants and toddlers and their families, and responsibility for completing experimental protocols. Students who will receive a bachelor's degree by June 2013 will be eligible for the positions. The fellowships will commence in July 2013, and they are 2 years in duration. 7.Care for Individual with Developmental Disabilities--PT Weekends
Dependable Home Health Care has been providing support services to people with developmental disabilities for the last twenty years. DHHC is seeking patient and motivated staff who will spend time with an individual with a developmental disability and mental illness. Duties include taking client to community events, teach daily living skills and model healthy relationships. Shift runs 14 hours (Saturday or Sunday 9 am - 11pm) in duration without an overnight! Training will be provided to those offered a position. Preferred candidates will have experience working in a group home and working with persons who have developmental disabilities and have excellent behavior management skills. Adrienne Turzynski, a Clinical Supervisor Behavior Analyst for the Lovaas Institute Midwest, will share about her experiences as an undergrad in our department that contributed to her career path and how you can get to a similar position. 3.All Fall 2012 PSY 4993/5993 Contracts Must Be Turned In by 10/29
Students participating in a PSY 4993/5993 experience during Fall 2012 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract prior to the 8th week deadline (October 29nd, 2012--this was listed incorrectly as 10/22 in last week's Scoop). The majority of students have completed this required step during the drop/add period; however, if you missed this deadline and still have a contract lingering, you must take action to be officially enrolled. Contracts will not be accepted after this date, and credit will not be received for your work in the lab for Fall 2012. This is a shift from past protocol and will be strictly enforced. 5.Intensive Research Experience through TRiO's McNair Scholars Program
The U of M Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is now accepting applications for summer 2013. The application deadline is February 4, 2013. The goal of McNair Scholars is to give undergraduate students intensive, faculty-driven research experiences and prepare students for entry into and success in graduate school. McNair Scholars program is a 10 week summer research program where students will: Receive a $ 3000.00 stipend throughout the summer; Be paired up with a professor to work on their research (research can take place with faculty in any academic discipline/college--check out the alumni roster); Learn how to develop a quality research paper; Receive help with the application process (i.e. identify graduate programs, write a personal statement, and create a curriculum vita); Present their research at poster sessions held here at the U of M; and, most importantly, develop a great relationship with a professor that is invaluable in terms of getting admitted into graduate school! To qualify, you must be a first generation college student and low income, or from an underrepresented group, and a GPA of 2.75 and above. You must be a full time sophomore or junior and a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. Students with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) focus are strongly encouraged to apply to the McNair Scholars Program, as are student veterans. 9.Critical Language Scholarships
All students are invited to learn about these federally funded scholarships for intensive summer study abroad in the Critical Need languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu. US citizens age 18 and over in any major may apply. Some institutes have language prerequisites but many are open to beginners. The scholarship covers all costs for participating in these exceptional language institutes abroad. 1.All Fall 2012 PSY 4993/5993 Contracts Must Be Turned In by 10/22
Students participating in a PSY 4993/5993 experience during Fall 2012 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract prior to the 8th week deadline (October 22nd, 2012). The majority of students have completed this required step during the drop/add period; however, if you missed this deadline and still have a contract lingering, you must take action to be officially enrolled. Contracts will not be accepted after this date, and credit will not be received for your work in the lab for Fall 2012. This is a shift from past protocol and will be strictly enforced. 6.Get Published in an Undergraduate Journal!--Tiresias: Writings in Gender & Sexuality
Tiresias is an interdisciplinary journal that opens a forum for questions in the study of gender and sexuality. It is interested in formal essays that explore the way these identities intersect with race, class, and history. Tiresias welcomes academically rigorous, undergraduate level research that speaks to issues regarding past, present, and future directions of gender and sexuality. The journal accepts three kinds of submissions: original research articles, analytical essays, and book reviews. Papers are welcome from all departments, such as (but not excluded to): English, Comparative Literature, Classics, Women's and Gender Studies, Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Psychology, Political Science and Philosophy. Submissions should follow the author-date system of documentation, with limited footnotes, as outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.) Articles should not exceed a maximum length of 5,000 words, including references and footnotes. An abstract of no more than 250 words should accompany your submission. A separate title page should have the following: your name, e-mail address, university, major and year of graduation. Deadline: November 9, 2012 for the Spring 2013 Issue. Brainscape, a New York-based startup founded by cognitive scientists and education industry executives to help people learn faster, has created a new GRE Psychology prep app. Brainscape's new GRE Psych product will soon be sold both online and on the App Store for $50 per student. It, however, will be offered FREE for the month of October. This particular GRE Psychology curriculum was recently completed in partnership with several professors, tutors, and grad students who aced the exam themselves. The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine will be making a visit to the University of Minnesota (first in many years!), and along with them will be representatives from about 10 osteopathic medical schools around the region and country. There are only 29 DO schools in the whole country, and none in Minnesota, so this will be a wonderful opportunity for students to speak with admissions reps from these schools and learn about the "DO difference". The event will consist of an information session, a Q & A session with admissions representatives, followed by a resource fair in the Moos Tower hallway where each school will be tabling. Dependable Home Health Care has been providing support services for people with developmental disabilities for over twenty years. We are seeking two caring, patient and responsible people for Direct Care Counselor positions, delivering supportive services for individuals with developmental disabilities living in a group home. Two positions are currently available at Dependable Home Health Care--one during morning hours, the other weekend. The Morning Direct Care Counselor would help our group home clients with their morning routines in one of our group homes in either White Bear Lake or Maplewood. Successful candidate would work 10-15 hours per week Monday- Friday from 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 or 9:00a.m. The Weekends Direct Care Counselor would join the team at one of our group homes in Northern Ramsey County. The Weekend Direct Care Counselor will work directly with persons served in the implementation of the written Individual Support Plans, documenting progress and response to program services, and ensuring the safety and well-being of each person. 11.Next Steps Plus Additional FREE Practice Test for GRE, MCAT, & More from Kaplan
For students who DID take advantage of last weekend's Kaplan practice tests, Ann Peckskamp will be available this Friday, October 12th at a table by Starbucks in Coffman to go over your scores and answer any questions you may have. For those of you who were unable to take the FREE Practice Test for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, and PCAT, a re-take will be available on Saturday, October 27th. As space is limited, this event does require pre-registration. The event will be more convenient than ever as you'll be able to take the exam live and online in our Classroom Anywhere environment: Available from anywhere you have internet access. Tests will be proctored like an actual exam, and students will receive their score immediately following the exam. After the test, one of the Kaplan instructors will give a short workshop on test-taking strategies and will answer any questions that you may have. This is a great opportunity for you to see how you might score on the real thing, and also to become familiar with the kinds of questions that will be on the real test. 4.Film Screening & Q&A for 'Crime After Crime'--Examine Issues of Domestic Violence & Law
Tuesday, October 16th; 7:00pm

The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce that we are co-sponsoring (with the Law School and other departments) the showing of a film, 'Crime after Crime,' about domestic violence. The film, described as incredibly powerful, has won 16 major awards since it premiered at Sundance last year. Free From Abuse, a national nonprofit project to help educate law school students and legal professionals about domestic violence law, is working with law schools nationwide to make arrangements for bringing this film, and the people behind it, to campuses. "Crime After Crime" closely follows the legal battle to free a survivor of domestic violence from prison, 20 years after she was sentenced to life behind bars for murdering the man who abused her. The film has earned over 20 awards including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and The New York Times called the film "Magnificent." Please view the trailer here. 9.Want Counseling-Related Experience? Volunteer Opportunity as a Support Group Facilitator!
1 million people die by suicide every year. They leave behind countless family members and friends to make sense of it. In November, survivors of suicide loss come together at healing conferences in their communities and online for support and guidance. The Greater MN Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be hosting an event in Minneapolis on Saturday, November 17, and we are looking for a few volunteers to facilitate healing discussion groups on that day. The format would be casual and conversational, generally designed to provide new opportunities for peer support as this day may be the first time some have ever spoken with other survivors. 10.Spend Your Summer in Cuba or South Africa Researching an Area of Interest!
Next summer (2013), the Student Project for Amity among Nations (SPAN) will send groups of students to Cuba and South Africa. Students will conduct independent research of their own choosing, working with qualified academic advisors. For a total of 8 U of M academic credits, you can study the country and define your research during this school year ('12-'13), live and work in the selected country for 8 weeks next summer ('13), and write an extensive research paper next year on your findings ('13-'14).
