4.Film Screening & Q&A for 'Crime After Crime'--Examine Issues of Domestic Violence & Law
Tuesday, October 16th; 7:00pm
Rm 25 Mondale Hall, U of M Law School
The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce that we are co-sponsoring (with the Law School and other departments) the showing of a film, 'Crime after Crime,' about domestic violence. The film, described as incredibly powerful, has won 16 major awards since it premiered at Sundance last year. Free From Abuse, a national nonprofit project to help educate law school students and legal professionals about domestic violence law, is working with law schools nationwide to make arrangements for bringing this film, and the people behind it, to campuses. "Crime After Crime" closely follows the legal battle to free a survivor of domestic violence from prison, 20 years after she was sentenced to life behind bars for murdering the man who abused her. The film has earned over 20 awards including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and The New York Times called the film "Magnificent." Please view the trailer here. The film director, Yoam Potash, and an attorney featured in the film will both come for a Q&A session afterwards.

9.Want Counseling-Related Experience? Volunteer Opportunity as a Support Group Facilitator!
1 million people die by suicide every year. They leave behind countless family members and friends to make sense of it. In November, survivors of suicide loss come together at healing conferences in their communities and online for support and guidance. The Greater MN Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be hosting an event in Minneapolis on Saturday, November 17, and we are looking for a few volunteers to facilitate healing discussion groups on that day. The format would be casual and conversational, generally designed to provide new opportunities for peer support as this day may be the first time some have ever spoken with other survivors. If you are interested in being a discussion facilitator and would like more information, please email Erik Arveseth at earveseth@gmail.com. Additionally, if you know survivors that would benefit from the event, please invite them and provide them with this participant registration link: www.survivorsday.eventbrite.com. General Information is available here and here.
