PSYCHOLOGY ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.All Fall 2012 PSY 4993/5993 Contracts Must Be Turned In by 10/22
Students participating in a PSY 4993/5993 experience during Fall 2012 MUST complete and turn in the Undergraduate Research Contract prior to the 8th week deadline (October 22nd, 2012). The majority of students have completed this required step during the drop/add period; however, if you missed this deadline and still have a contract lingering, you must take action to be officially enrolled. Contracts will not be accepted after this date, and credit will not be received for your work in the lab for Fall 2012. This is a shift from past protocol and will be strictly enforced. 2.Save the Date to Attend the ABA/Autism Careers & Pizza Event:10/30!
Join Psychology Advising on Tuesday, October 30th from 11:30am - 1:00pm for Careers & Pizza, featuring 1 - 2 professionals currently working within the field of Applied Behavioral Analysis or working with individuals with Autism. This is a chance to learn what you can be doing now to build a career in this area. Check next week's Scoop for additional details and RSVP information.

3.Meeting on 10/18 w/CLA Career Services & an Officer Panel on Engagement
Psi Chi/Psychology Club will be meeting this Thursday Oct 18th at 4:30 in N391 Elliott Hall! We will be having representatives from CLA Career Services to give tips on resume building and other professional development skills. Secondly, there will be an officer panel where officers can answer any questions on their research opportunities, personal experiences, course work, and internships. Officers will be available after meeting if you would like to bring an electronic or paper copy of your resume for feedback. All are welcome and snacks will be provided.

More than 100 graduate and professional programs from throughout the country will be represented at the University of Minnesota's Graduate and Professional School Day. This free, University-wide event provides students the opportunity to speak with representatives from law, business, education, health sciences and a variety of other graduate and professional programs. The event will also feature helpful workshops on "How to Apply" and "Effective Personal Statements". This annual event is coordinated by CLA Career Services. Join the Facebook event here. 5.University Student Legal Services Hosting 35th Anniversary Event
Thursday, October 18th; 4:30 - 6:00pm (speaking portion @5:30)

The University Student Legal Service and the Board of Directors are proud to announce its 35th Anniversary Celebration, commemorating decades of exceptional legal service and community involvement at the University of Minnesota. Some fascinating guests and speakers will be present including Senator Amy Klobuchar and Representative Keith Ellison, MN Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie Gildea, and University officials such as Provost Karen Hanson. Catered snacks and other activities will also be provided, as well as a chance to meet the speakers and local legal professionals. All U of M students and faculty are invited to take part in celebrating a remarkable and lengthy history of student legal assistance!

6.Get Published in an Undergraduate Journal!--Tiresias: Writings in Gender & Sexuality
Tiresias is an interdisciplinary journal that opens a forum for questions in the study of gender and sexuality. It is interested in formal essays that explore the way these identities intersect with race, class, and history. Tiresias welcomes academically rigorous, undergraduate level research that speaks to issues regarding past, present, and future directions of gender and sexuality. The journal accepts three kinds of submissions: original research articles, analytical essays, and book reviews. Papers are welcome from all departments, such as (but not excluded to): English, Comparative Literature, Classics, Women's and Gender Studies, Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Psychology, Political Science and Philosophy. Submissions should follow the author-date system of documentation, with limited footnotes, as outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.) Articles should not exceed a maximum length of 5,000 words, including references and footnotes. An abstract of no more than 250 words should accompany your submission. A separate title page should have the following: your name, e-mail address, university, major and year of graduation. Deadline: November 9, 2012 for the Spring 2013 Issue. Email submissions to: RUTPjournal@gmail.com with the subject title as "Submission-[your name]."

9.Hiring Two Full-Time Advisors for TRiO Upward Bound in the Twin Cities
Upward Bound, a non-profit organization focused on preparing students from low-income families to enter college and succeed, has openings for two Upward Bound Advisors. Advise, tutor and implement programming that supports high school graduation and college preparedness of diverse participants in the Upward Bound Program at Dakota County Technical College. Recruit new UB participants, plan and implement monthly Saturday sessions, coordinate and maintain student records and database. Assist in planning UB summer program. Qualifications include: Experience working with students who may experience barriers to their academic success, including students who are from low-income, first generation families; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Ability to work effectively with diverse populations; Strong attention to detail; Computer skills using Microsoft Office suite; Bachelors' degree in education, math, science, social/behavior sciences or related field; Experience with TRiO participation, working in a high school, providing college and career advising, or tutoring, teaching or facilitating groups of high school students; Knowledge of Asperger's Syndrome a plus. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience (minimum starting pay of $16.41/hour). Submit your online application and supporting information here. 10.Studying for the Psychology GRE? A Temporarily Free App Can Help
Brainscape, a New York-based startup founded by cognitive scientists and education industry executives to help people learn faster, has created a new GRE Psychology prep app. Brainscape's new GRE Psych product will soon be sold both online and on the App Store for $50 per student. It, however, will be offered FREE for the month of October. This particular GRE Psychology curriculum was recently completed in partnership with several professors, tutors, and grad students who aced the exam themselves.
