Psychology Advising

1. CONNECT! Schedule an Appiontment with a Psychology Advisor! 
Making CONNECTions is a crucial part of your undergraduate student experience, especially within your major. As your major advisors, we want to connect with you! In Psychology Undergraduate Advising we have a great deal of psych-related experience, including having worked in a wide variety of psychology-related positions, completed both undergraduate and graduate programs in psych, traveled and studied abroad, and completed internships and maintained connections with alumni and current graduate students who are working in the field. We would like to invite you to schedule an appointment to simply CONNECT. Relationship building is important, so if there is an advisor who you have met with in the past, or has experience in something that you are interested in, feel free to request a specific advisor. October is a great month for these type of appointments, so act now before the rush!

The Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE) is hosting its annual Scholarship Fair for undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds on October 1st. 6. CLA Practice Interview Day 
Friday, October 2; 524 Bruininks Hall, Interview Center; times vary - choose a 45 minute time slot 
This is a great way to practice for job or internship interviews. This free event is open to all CLA students. You'll do a practice interview with an employer and receive helpful feedback afterward. Professional recruiters from various organizations facilitate the interviews. Your practice session will be 45 minutes long. To sign up for an interview time-slot, log in to GoldPASS, hover over the "On-Campus Interviews" tab, then select the "Sign-up for Interviews you qualify for" option.
7. Pre-Law Workshop - Should I go to Law School? 
Friday, October 2, 5:00-6:00pm; 520 Bruininks Hall Thinking about law school? Come get your questions answered! This workshop, hosted by CLA Career Services, will help you decide if law school is right for you, and how to start preparing. 
8. Thinking about Social Work? Attend an M.S.W. Info Session
Saturday, October 3, 1:00-3:00; 10 McNeal Hall (St. Paul Campus) A master's degree in social work prepares students for meaningful careers in a variety of fields, including mental health, government and nonprofit work, education, and more. in The UMTC School of Social Work admits students to the M.S.W. program once per year for fall semester enrollment. 9. UROP Deadline is Next Monday, October 5th! 
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduates either to work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project or to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor. UROP projects are an ideal way to bring together the University's research and teaching missions, and the program is well funded, providing over 100 grants for CLA students every year. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. To learn more about the UROP program, visit www.urop.umn.edu. The due date for UROP applications for spring 2016 is October 5th, 2015. 10. MN Center for Eating Disorders Research Seeking Volunteers 
The Minnesota Center for Eating Disorders Research at The University of Minnesota is looking for volunteers for fall 2015 who are interested in gaining research experience! Ideal candidates will have some relevant experience (i.e., prior research or clinical experience), but this is not required. This position ranges from about 8-10 hours per week. Duties include: data entry, phone assessment, and various other tasks as need requires. If interested, please send a resume and cover letter to Jessica McManus at jamcmanu@umn.edu. An interview is required for individuals interested in this position.

12. CLA Internship Scholarship ($1500!)-- Application due Wednesday, October 7th! 
Do you have an unpaid internship this fall? The $1,500 CLA Internship Scholarship program through CLA Career Services may be what you're looking for. 13. Truman Scholarship for Graduate Study 
Currently enrolled juniors who have public service and leadership experience, strong academic records, and intend to pursue a public service career are invited to apply for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Detailed information about the scholarship may be obtained at the Truman Foundation’s website, www.truman.gov. Truman candidates must be nominated by their undergraduate institution, so your first step is to submit a preliminary application for the campus nomination process. A committee of U of M faculty will review the applications, conduct interviews, and select up to four nominees. Information sessions will be held on October 14 at 12:00 and October 15 at 3:00 in Northrop 106. Campus application deadline is November 9. Email natschol@umn.edu for more information. Applications are due November 9th, 2015.

14. The Aurora Center is Accepting Volunteer Applications 
Want to get involved on campus in a meaningful way? The Aurora Center provides a safe and confidential space for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and family members or friends affiliated with the University of Minnesota, TC or Augsburg College who are victims/survivors/concerned people of sexual assault, relationship violence, or stalking. The Aurora Center offers volunteer opportunities at The University of Minnesota that are focused on providing support to survivors and educating to the campus. All positions are designed to foster leadership and professional skill development for volunteers. Availalbe positions include Direct Service Advocates, Violence Prevention Educators, and Special Projects Volunteers. Applications are being accepted now through November 16th. Psychology Advising

1. Designated Drop-in Hours Start Today
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated Drop-in Hours during the academic year. During the first two weeks of the term, we have been taking drop-ins all day, but normal drop-in hours take effect this week (week of September 21st). While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds drop-in hours once a week and cannot address walk-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified drop-in times. Please see our website for more information on our Office Hours & Availability. Check the Psych Scoop each week for possible change in availability.

12. International Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (I-UROP)
The International Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP) Scholarship is designed to promote learning abroad opportunities to undergraduate students by providing critical funding to students enrolled in select credit-bearing learning abroad programs involving a research project. The learning abroad program must be for the semester or full academic year and involve a minimum of 100 hours dedicated to research that occurs on site. Scholarships of $2,500 are offered. Deadline for spring 2016 is October 31, 2015.

The Health Services Management minor, delivered partially online, provides an option for undergraduates who want to add a health services management concentration to their existing degree plan. Students will gain a conceptual understanding of the business aspects of health care, along with analytical and problem-solving skills. The minor is available to students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at the University of Minnesota. 1. Fall 2015 Drop-in Advising 
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated Drop-in Hours during the academic year. Due to high student demand the first 2 weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available on drop-ins from 8:30-4:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 9:45-4:30 on Thursday. Drop-in hours are a great time to get research contracts signed, and to ask 5-10 minute questions; longer issues will be referred to schedule a full appointment. Our normal drop-in hours will take effect on Tuesday, September 22nd. You can make a difference! This free event gives students (grad and undergrad) a chance to learn about Twin Cities volunteer and internship opportunities. 9. Cross-Cultural Leadership Retreat

ISSS is currently looking for undergraduate students to apply for the Cross-Cultural Leadership Retreat. This retreat is for undergraduate students who want to become more effective in international environments. This interactive, high-energy event becomes a living laboratory of what it takes to work with people from dicipants start friendships with people from all over the world and discover their own leadership potential. A cutting edge cross-cultural leadership model, Personal Leadership, will be used to develop participants' cross cultural skill-set that is needed for professional and personal lives in the 21st century. Students who have completed this retreat were and are currently in various leadership positions, from Welcome Week Leaders, Global Gopher Week Leaders and CAs across campus! 11. UGRA's Needed: Social, Political, & Legal Psychology 
Researchers in social, political and legal psychology are looking for undergraduate research assistants to start work during the Fall semester, earning research credit for PSY 5993. RAs will be assisting with coding and data analysis in a study examining racial attitudes, prejudice regulation, and public policy attitudes. Responsibilities include coding and entering data, and attending regular meetings, which will be scheduled based on RA's availability. The position runs during the Fall semester, with the opportunity to continue into the Spring. RAs will be expected to work approximately 6-10 hours per week (may vary across weeks). Strong candidates for this position will be conscientious, bright, motivated students interested in the research process. Preference will be given to students willing to commit to 2 semesters in the lab and to those with previous research experience. 12. Apply for UROP: Spring 2016 Deadline is October 5th 
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduates either to work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project or to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor. UROP projects are an ideal way to bring together the University's research and teaching missions, and the program is well funded, providing over 100 grants for CLA students every year. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). 18. Global Health in Thailand: Humans, Elephants and Disease
Application open until October 1st. Global Health in Thailand: Humans, Elephants, & Disease, is a 3 credit winter break program, but combines two weeks in Thailand with 7 classes, one hour each week, Jan-March. This class, led by health professionals, looks at the relationship between human health and animal health – with a particular focus on tuberculosis in elephants and humans. In Thailand students will visit elephant camps, and learn about the transmission of TB from human to elephant as well as elephant to human. Back in the US, students will meet weekly for seven weeks to further explore TB in Minnesota, hearing from health experts who are actively working on both TB and drug-resistant TB. Finally students will have an opportunity to explore the role that culture plays in zoonotic diseases including discussions of other zoonotic diseases such as ebola, Hantavirus, avian influenza, ovine spongiform encephalitis, rabies and many others. 20. Shen Neurolaw Lab Hiring Paid Undergraduate Research Assistant 
Neuroscience + Law = Neurolaw, and the Shen Neurolaw Lab is actively exploring a number of topics at the neurolaw intersection. 21. Paid Undergraduate Research Assistant Positions in Chicago Longitudinal Study 
The Chicago Longitudinal Study (CLS) is seeking undergraduate research assistants (URAs) to start immediately. Since 1985, the CLS has been following up with a group of 1,500 low-income individuals who attended Kindergarten in Chicago Public Schools. Intervention group members attended the Child-Parent Center (CPC) Program, the oldest federally funded extended early childhood intervention. Previous results have been published in top scientific journals and have informed educational policy at the local and national levels. They also enabled the project's team to win a $15 million U.S. Department of Education grant to expand the CPC Program across the Midwest. URAs will locate contact information for participants using a variety of platforms (e.g., online databases, email, phone) and conduct phone interviews. This is an excellent opportunity to learn new research skills, and about early childhood interventions and social policy.This position is paid. URAs are asked to work a minimum of 10 hours per week, with the option to work up to 20 hours per week.
