Psychology Advising

1. Introducing PsyCareer Drop-in Hours! 
Do you have questions about internships, job search strategies, graduate school planning, or career fields related to your psychology major? Visit our new weekly PsyCareer Drop-in Hours with Laura Heilman, CLA Career Counselor. Laura will hold drop-ins once each week on a different day and time in conjunction with Psychology Undergraduate Advising Drop-in Hours. Laura will be holding her next PsyCareer drop-ins next Wednesday, October 28th from 10:00am-12:00pm (during Kelley's Drop-in hours) in N118 Elliott Hall. 
2. Considering Grad School in Mental Health? Attend this Info Session! 
Wednesday, October 28th, 5:00-6:30pm, N219 Elliott Hall 
Psychology Undergraduate Advising will be hosting the 'Mental Health Graduate School Information Session'. This is an opportunity to hear from a panel of graduate students in various Mental Health-related programs from across the metro area, including a few from the University of Minnesota. Bring a pen, paper, and any questions you may have! As seating is limited, please RSVP to psyadvis@umn.edu with "Grad Panel RSVP" in the subject heading.
3. New Transfer Students: Psychology Transfer Welcome Party! 
Wednesday, October 28th, 2:30-4:30pm, N118 Elliott Hall 
Psychology Undergraduate Advising invites you to attend the Psychology Transfer Welcome Party for transfer students in the Psychology major. Use this time to learn more about opportunities available to you in the community and on campus, ask Psychology Advisors & Psi Chi/Psych Club and PISA officers questions about your major and getting involved, get to know your peers, and enjoy some of the area’s unique pizzas! We’ll have the famous Mesa Pizza (a staple to the U of M student experience), Campus Pizza, and Pizza Luce. If you require a gluten-free option, please note this in your RSVP—we can order one from Pizza Luce! The Transfer Welcome Party will be held from 2:30pm – 4:30pm on Wednesday, October 28th, 2015 in the Psychology Advising Corridor, starting in the Study Room N118 Elliott Hall. You do not have to stay for the whole time and may come when you are available - no formal presentation will be taking place. If you plan on attending for any amount of time, you must RSVP no later than Monday, October 26th by sending an email to psyadvis@umn.edu with “I’m coming for pizza” in the subject line. 4. Meet the Graduates: Graduate School Q&A for International Psych Students
Monday, October 26th, 5:30-6:30pm, N668 Elliott Hall. "What am I going to do now? I have no idea what am I going to do after I graduate…" Keep calm and MEET THE GRADUATES! There will be 1-2 international graduate students from each area of psychology. Food will be provided! This event is open for ALL STUDENTS, both domestic and international, who interested in pursuing graduate school in Psychology. ALL graduates students that will be represented are international students. 5. Buddy Program 
Want to get a buddy asking which professor’s class to take? Want to get a buddy discussing different labs from neuroscience to workplace? Want to get a buddy with shockingly different cultures and eye-opening stories? Join our Buddy Program! The goal of the PISA Buddy Program is to find you a buddy who is also studying Psychology with similar interests and with whom you can discuss various topics in psychology while helping each other in achieving academic goals. Please follow this link to answer some questions about your goals and interests to help us match you with a buddy. The matching process will be on a rolling basis and the deadline for submission of the form is October 27th! Sign up as soon as possible! 6. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Info Session 
Wednesday, October 21st, 11:15am-12:45pm, 205 Humphrey School 
The Central Intelligence Agency is interested in meeting with students from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. Agency representatives will cover a broad range of topics to include the Agency's mission, potential career opportunities, the online process, an overview of the security and medical screening process; and there will be a question-and-answer period. In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet with agency representatives one on one during Recruiter-in-Residence sessions. 7. Government & Nonprofit Career Fair

The Government & Nonprofit Career Fair allows students to pursue professional opportunities and internships in all levels of government and nonprofit agencies. There will be optional breakout sessions throughout the day located in the Coffman Theatre (first floor). 10:00am: NP 101: Intro to Careers in Nonprofits; 11:15am: Professionals in Government: City, County, State, and Federal Jobs;12:30pm: Keynote: Kate Warren from Devex: The Media Platform for the Global Development Community. 10. Mental Health Resources Recruitment Open House 
Thursday, October 29th, 5:00-7:00pm; MHR East, St. Paul
Mental Health Resources, Inc. (MHR) is a nonprofit organization achieving the mission of fostering hope, health and recovery for those affected by mental illness. Our community-based model provides mental health services, case management, and care coordination for adults living with serious mental illness. Our goal is to partner with clients to enhance their ability to live full and independent lives in the community. With over 200 full-time staff, MHR is one of the largest community mental health providers in the Twin Cities. We are always looking for strong talent to provide direct services in case management, care coordination, and counseling. Join us to learn more about our organization and commitment to our philosophy of care. 11. National Alliance on Mental Illness State Conference: Forging a Better Future
Saturday, November 7th, 8:30am-5:00pm; RiverCentre, St. Paul; Registration Required! 
NAMI Minnesota's State Conference will be held Nov. 7, at the RiverCentre in St. Paul. The opening keynote speaker will be Lisa Dixon, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, and director of the Center for Practice Innovations at New York State Hospital. Dr. Dixon is an internationally recognized health services researcher with over 25 years of continuous funding from the National Institute of Mental Health and the VA. The closing keynoter will be activist and comedian Kevin Breel, known widely for his virally viewed TED Talk, "Confessions of a Depressed Comic" which gives voice to an often silent struggle and offers a message of hope. The conference will also include a Youth Track. A more detailed agenda will be posted soon.The cost for students is $35, and there are limited partial scholarships available. Lunch is included. 12. Volunteer Research Assistants Wanted 
Students assistants wanted for a project involving searching for recent studies of aggression, and related searches, using Google Scholar. Please contact Prof. Michael Potegal, Associate Professor in Occpuational Therapy, at poteg001@umn.edu for further information.

13. Mental Health Resources 
As fall semester is now in full swing, this time of year can also be a time of transition, increasing demand, and heightened stress. It can sometimes be difficult to find the right balance. We want to make sure that you know that the University has a number of resources available to help students through tough times. Go to the Student Mental Health website to find information about the various University of Minnesota mental health resources available to students. These resources may be of assistance to you, as well as friends who may be experiencing emotions and/or displaying behavior that concerns you.
14. University Libraries 
The U Libraries are a great resource for students! They have free workshops, tutorials and services! There are Peer Research Consultants who provide one-on-one assistance to students to help them develop academic research strategies and navigate the . The Libraries also sponsor an Online Assignment Calculator that allows students to keep track of due dates and receive step-by-step instructions to stay on top of assignments like a research papers, presentations, projects, UROP proposals, and more. If you aren't sure where to start with conducting research in the library system, there is an Online Tutorial to walk you through the basics of using the University Libraries, the website, and finding academic sources. These are just a few of the resources the libraries have to offer --check out www.lib.umn.edu for more information. 

Learning Abroad

15. Volunteer over Spring Break in Ecuador or Guatemala 
Applications for the Learning Abroad Center's volunteer and community engagement Spring Break programs are due November 2nd. On the Volunteer & Community Engagement in Ecuador program, students will spend spring break in Ecuador volunteering and engaging with the local community. They will explore colonial Quito, a cloud forest reserve, and the beautiful Andes mountains; volunteer at a community-based project in a rural area; and live with a host family. On the Volunteer & Community Engagement in Guatemala program, students will explore the colonial city of Antigua during spring break. They will engage with local community members through volunteer activities, homestays, and Spanish tutoring. Volunteer projects include education, social work, and construction. The Non-Credit Learning Abroad Grant is applicable to these programs. For more information, see the Learning Abroad Center's website

16. Start the Semester Off On the Wrong Foot? LASK 1101 Can Help 
If you're having some difficulties this semester, LASK 1101: Academic Refresher might be a great B-term course for you. LASK 1101 is a 1-credit, mid-semester course that offers assistance over the 2nd half of the semester to students experiencing academic concerns. In LASK 1101, students receive weekly instruction and the opportunity to consult with students facing similar challenges. A permission number is not needed to register for this course. You may find the course listed in the Class Search, using "LASK" as a subject search term. See the Student Academic Success Services (SASS) websitefor more information.

17. Consumer Advocate Position with MN Attorney General Lori Swanson
The Office of the Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson is seeking a Consumer Advocate. Consumer Advocates assist and advocate for Minnesota citizens on an array of different issues. They research and analyze complex laws and problems and communicate with a variety of parties to help forge solutions that benefit individual consumers and make a difference in their lives. They have one, possibly two openings for this role.The job posting can be found on GoldPASS (job ID# 150331). General Swanson's office will also be represented at next week's Government & Nonprofit Career Fair. 
18. Entry-Level Cognitive Trainer Position Openings 
LearningRX has positions open for Cognitive Trainers in Chanhassen, Maple Grove and Vadnais Heights. Come join the LearningRx cognitive skills training team and help change lives by improving cognitive ability! Our part-time Cognitive Skills Trainers work one-on-one with individuals utilizing clinically-proven procedures to improve areas such as memory, attention, auditory processing and IQ. We are looking for quick thinking, high energy individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree or are in their junior/senior year. Hours are flexible but we require at least four days with availability between the hours of 4PM-8PM. This is a great long-term part-time position for individuals seeking psychology experience. 19. Active Recess Volunteers Needed at Windom Elementary 
Active Recess is an approach designed to increase the physical activity of students during recess, as well as decrease incidents of problem behavior on the playground. Volunteers will assist the "Recess Squad" (a group of Windom students) in setting up and supervising the Play Stations, and will promote positive interactions between the students and/or assist in conflict resolution when problems arise. Volunteers will also provide the school's Behavior Mitigation Team with feedback, input and suggestions, based on their observations, on how to mitigate student behaviors, improve the recess experience for the entire student body, and/or for specific students who need extra behavior support during recess. The schedule for this volunteer opportunity is between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Being able to speak and understand Spanish is a plus, but is not required for this position. 20. AmeriCorps Positions with College Possible
College Possible is a growing nonprofit dedicated to coaching low-income students to-and-through college, breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering our workforce. Our rigorously-tested model earns top-of-field results that have helped 98 percent of students served earn admission to college and supported nearly 80 percent through graduation. A 2011 Harvard study found that the program more than doubles a student's chance of enrolling in a four-year college. As an AmeriCorps organization, College Possible is recruiting college graduates to serve for one year to help make a college degree and college success possible for low-income students. With positions ranging from working directly with students to writing grants to coordinating events, there are many opportunities offered. Not only do College Possible AmeriCorps members make a difference in their community, they gain valuable experience for their next job or graduate school endeavor.
