2. Psi Chi / Psychology Club Meeting: Campus Involvement

Psi Chi/Psychology Club is hosting a campus involvement night this coming Monday. The president of Active Minds is going to speak about what their group does to reduce the stigma of mental illness, a career services representative will explain their services, and UROP will present their research options. Come learn some more about campus involvement opportunities and have your questions answered. Plus there will be cookies!
3. Psi Chi: Membership Fees due Friday, December 18th
If you were accepted to Psi Chi this semester, please make sure that you submit your membership fee to the Psi Chi drop box near Psychology Advising (N108) by December 18th. If you have any questions please contact Psi Chi at psichi@umn.edu

4. Registering for Research with a Child Psychology Faculty Member
If you are planning to work in a Child Development research lab (with a Faculty member from the Institute of Child Psychology) and register for CPsy 4994 credit, this experience can be used towards the Psychology major as PSY elective credit. In order to use CPsy 4994 for credit toward your psychology major, you must fill out a Psychology Undergraduate Research Contract and have it approved by Psychology Advising before the end of the 2nd week of the term. If you do not fill out an Psychology Undergraduate Research Contract by the deadline, the credit will not be applicable towards your Psychology major. Learning Abroad

6. Psychology & Research in Madrid: Summer 2016
The Learning Abroad Center, together with the Department of Psychology and the Fundacion Ortega-MaraƱon in Madrid, will once again offer Psychology & Research in Madrid, a study abroad program in Madrid, Spain this summer. On this program, students will earn 6 credits of PSY Credit in just 6 weeks! Students will take Psy 3061-Biological Psychology (taught by Professor Jonathan Gewirtz, Department of Psychology UMN-TC) and work in research labs in Madrid, earning 3 credits of Psy 5993-Directed Resesarch in Psychology. Students on the program will have the choice of living in local dormitories or with a Spanish host family. This program is a great opportunity for students to gain an international perspective on psychology, specifically in the brain science area, and to work on psychological research while abroad! Best of all, this program is extremely affordable. For more information, take a look at the Learning Abroad Center's Website. The application for this program is now open!
Preference will be given to students with Spanish experience, preferable high level. If you have questions about this program, or how it would count towards the Psychology major (BA or BS), please contact Psychology Advising.
7. May 2016 Global Seminars Info Session

8. Winter Break Immersion: PA 3481- The Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood
Over the winter break, the University will offer PA 3481: The Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood: Where the World Meets Minnesota, a 3-credit immersion experience course in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. This 3 credit course is an immersion in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood in January that parallels the immersion experience of study abroad. The course encourages civic engagement and will provide opportunity to learn and work in the Cedar Riverside community while examining questions of leadership, power, cultural diversity and social change. Students will participate in class-based discussion seminars, neighborhood excursions and community work. Throughout the winter session, you will be challenged to question, think, and respond thoughtfully to the issues facing the Cedar-Riverside community and cultivate leadership skills. MEETING TIME: Monday – Friday8:30am – 12noon, January 4–8, and 11-15. Open to all majors. No prerequisites. 10. ANTH 3980: Forensic Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology is offering its first ever Forensic Anthropology course in Spring 2016. The course will be taught by David Carlisle, a forensic anthropologist with the Minneapolis Crime Lab. Forensic Anthropology (ANTH 3980, Section 001). Forensic Anthropology explores the many applications of anthropological science to the legal and criminal justice system. From crime scene investigation to forensic archaeology, the methods and knowledge-base developed by anthropologists in their study of the human species comprise a powerful set of tools for aiding in the apprehension and prosecution of criminals. This course, taught by a practicing forensic anthropologist, will survey many of these applications, including identifying human remains, blood spatter analysis, trauma assessment and many others. This will be a lecture only class.

11. Full-Time Clinical Interviewer Position at Minneapolis VA Medical Center
Dr. Nicholas Davenport’s research laboratory at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center has a full-time opening for an individual interested in working with Veterans who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and/or PTSD. The goal of the study is to characterize changes over time in memory and thinking, as well as the structure and function of the brain, among Veterans serving in recent combat operations. These data may eventually allow clinicians to better diagnose and treat Veterans with one or both of these conditions. This position would require the applicant to conduct one-on-one interviews with OIF/OEF Veterans and assess their cognitive performance, mental health, and life experiences – including traumatic experiences. Other responsibilities would include recruitment, data entry, and MRI assistance. The applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Psychology or other health science) and be eligible for federal employment, which involves a full background check and drug screen. Applicants should have completed coursework in psychopathology (e.g., Abnormal Psychology), biopsychology or fundamental neuroscience, and statistics. Preference will be given to applicants with clinical interviewing experience. This is a full-time salaried position at GS-5 and eligible for benefits. 12. Research Assistant Positions at National Institute of Mental Health
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Emotion and Development Branch, Section on Bipolar Spectrum Disorders (BSD), in Bethesda, Maryland, seeks qualified individuals to fill IRTA (Intramural Research Training Award) positions, with employment starting late May/early June 2016. BSD seeks qualified graduating seniors to fill Research Assistant positions, with employment starting May/June 2016. BSD conducts research on the pathophysiology, treatment and prevention of childhood mental illnesses, with an emphasis on bipolar disorder in children. Research assistants are involved in all aspects of the clinical research process, including analyzing data and interacting with patients.
