Psychology Advising

1. Meet with Psychology Advising this Summer! 
As you enjoy your last few weeks of summer, keep our office’s resources in mind. Summer can be a great time to meet with a Psychology Advisor to discuss ‘big picture’ things like getting involved and post-graduation planning -- things that we can feel too busy to think about once the chaos of the academic year begins! Advisors in our office are available for appointments year-round to assist with psychology course-selection and major progress, career and graduate school preparation and selection, and general engagement to make the most out of your time here. Schedule an appointment to check-in with us. We look forward to seeing you! 

Research

2. Summer and Fall Research Opportunities on Child and Family Resilience 
Our lab studies how children and families who face adversity are able to attain resilient and positive outcomes. We are hoping to find research assistants who can start sometime this summer and continue throughout the fall semester. We are happy to help you get fall course credit for any summer/fall work you do (summer hours can lead to credit for fall) or if you prefer, help you get Honors Experience. This position may be of particular interest to students in Psychology, Child Development, or Ed/School Psychology interested in eventually pursuing graduate school, but is open to anyone. Our research is focused on mastery motivation. Mastery motivation is conceptualized as a drive within all infants and young children to master their environment. For children growing up in conditions of adversity such as homelessness, possessing this drive to explore, to manipulate objects and to demonstrate agency can help them achieve better outcomes and show resilience. We have videotapes of young children interacting with various fun toys for several minutes. RAs code every 10 seconds of these videos on items such as "task orientation," "persistence," and "positive emotion," among others. You will receive extensive training on the coding process, and ongoing support throughout the project. If you would like to apply, please send us the following: a. Resume b. 3. CSPH 3211- Living on Purpose: An Exploration of Self, Purpose, and Community 
Living on Purpose is a 2-credit, primarily online course designed to help students explore questions of meaning and purpose in college and in their lives. In this class community, students will examine the context and meaning of their own lives, explore other peoples' ways of living on purpose, and consider the big questions that shape their present and future. Through, readings, reflections, experiential exercises, and assignments, the course offers students time to define their own purpose at this time in their lives and to help build a framework to lead a purposeful life now and into the future. The course is primarily web-based with three mandatory, in-person classes. Students must have 30+ completed credits (or instructor consent) to enroll. This course is a great option for transfer students and anyone looking to build a stronger sense of community at the U!

4. Graduates Interested in Higher Ed: U of M Student Services Position Openings
Be sure to take advantage of the University of Minnesota’s Job Search board, which includes frequent postings for student services positions in academic advising, career services, and more. Many of these positions do not require an advanced (e.g. master's or beyond) degree. One of the many current openings includes an Employer Relations Coordinator through CEHD Career Services. The Employer Relations Coordinator position is an integral part of the CEHD Career Services team within CEHD Student Services and is a critical role that serves the entire college by strategically identifying, building and maintaining employer relationships with a focus on creating and ensuring access to internship and employment opportunities for CEHD students and alumni. The employer relations coordinator leads and manages on-campus recruiting for CEHD and develops programming, events and services that connect employers to CEHD students and alumni. 5. Research Internship Opportunity with Hennepin County 
Hennepin County's Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation is currently looking to recruit students for an undergraduate internship with the county’s Sex Offender Unit. The internship will provide students experience in research and data collection. Six years ago Hennepin County created a Microsoft Access database to house information regarding child pornography offenders including demographics, treatment completions, and diagnoses. The student intern would be responsible for adding approximately 80 new cases to the database and updating approximately 200 records that are already in the database. The statistics from this database are used to inform judges and have previously been presented to the Department of Justice in Washington, DC. The student would not be interacting with any clients, but would require a background check before accessing private and sensitive information. The work would take place at the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis. This is an unpaid position, but will provide experience in databases, research, and some basic data analysis. 6. Family Seeking PCA: Gain Experience in Applied Behavioral Analysis! 
Would you like to help others while getting paid? Work as a PCA with a 10 year-old boy with Autism in Northeast Minneapolis. Must have transportation to pick up our son from school and drive 1/4 miles to his therapist then back 1/4 miles to family's home. Must be open to some Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy training provided by in-home therapist. Your main goal would be transportation care in the afternoon M-Th around 3PM-6PM and available one Saturday night a month for mom and dad to enjoy a night out in town. 7. Congressional Internship with Congressman Keith Ellison in Minneapolis 
Congressman Ellison is looking for smart, hardworking, and passionate individuals for fall internship positions in his District Office in North Minneapolis. Internships are offered for individuals interested in learning the operations of a Congressional office: current events as they relate to Congressional activity, federal legislation and policy issues, constituent services, and events research and planning. Interns are asked to work at least 20 hours per week, and are partnered with supervisors in their areas of interest. Unfortunately, due to House ethics guidelines, we are not able to offer compensation to interns. People of color, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ individuals, and those from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Though this internship demands high-quality work, we are seeking applicants who are passionate about social justice and in need of experience. The priority deadline for fall internships is August 14, 2015, though applications will be accepted and reviewed until September 1, 2015.
