Master of Professional Studies in Addictions Counseling--MPS: ADDC (30 credits) - The evolution of substance abuse counseling from an intuitive, layperson endeavor to an evidence­-based practice has been remarkable. Advancements in neuroscience, pharmacotherapy, and clinical practices have expanded the body of research in the field and made it even more critical for counselors to stay informed. The MPS: ADDC provides a rigorous, applied clinical program that meets the up-to-date education and training needs of individuals seeking to acquire Minnesota's Alcohol and Drug Counselor (MNLADC) license. Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health--MPS: IBH (60 credits) - The high prevalence of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders virtually guarantees that counselors, no matter the treatment setting, will encounter clients struggling with not one but two or more disorders. The MPS: IBH merges mental health and substance abuse education and training into a single, comprehensive and cohesive program, and is designed to fulfill education and training requirements for two licenses: the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and the Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (MNLADC). In this session, Bendon will share his journey and the key decisions he made before leaving his fortune 100 job to become an independent consultant, and ultimately scaling a new business model designed for people looking to do independent work. 9. Secrets from CLA Alumni: How to Network Friday, April 8th, 3:00-4:30pm; The Beacon Room, University Recreation & Wellness Center Sign up through the "Career Fairs/Events" section on GoldPASS (event ID: 2916) CLA students and recent graduates (May 2014 or after) are invited to connect with more than 20 CLA alumni to learn how to effectively network. Students are constantly told to “network, network, network!” For some, networking comes naturally. For others, it is hard to know where to begin. During this event, students and alumni will have the opportunity to learn how to network and practice! The event will answer questions such as, “How do I first engage an individual?”, “What is the proper etiquette surrounding food and drinks at a networking event?”, and “How do I exit a conversation?”. The last half hour of the event will be an open networking period for students and alumni to put their newly acquired networking advice into practice. Engagement 12. Philosophy Camp: May Session, 4 Credits, 2 Lib Eds, and Llamas! It's not too late to sign up for Philosophy Camp! Philosophy Camp is the affectionate nickname given by students to the University of Minnesota course Philosophy 4326/5326—Lives Worth Living: Questions of Self, Vocation, and Community (4 credits, 3 weeks). A small group of students and instructors meet daily, from May 22nd through June 12th, and create a residential living-learning community experience at a retreat center on the prairie outside of Windom, MN. Participants in this course gain a fresh perspective on questions of self, vocation, education, sustainability, health, and community while enjoying simple living on the prairie of southwestern Minnesota. Students and instructors learn to investigate their own and others' responses to questions such as these: What is an authentic self? What is my work in the world? What kind of community do I want to have around me? What do I bring to my relationships and community? It’s a fantastic experience to add to your undergraduate (or graduate!) time, and is a great opportunity to make friends and learn about yourself. Courses 13. New PSY Service-Learning Course in Fall 2016 Have you ever wanted to give a little bit back to your community and get credit for it? Have you ever wanted a chance to get in a time machine and help your 8th-grade self see value in school? Are you excited at the thought of a room full of city kids starting to see themselves as scientists, engineers, researchers ... or just thoughtful people? If you answered "yes" to at least 2 of those 3 questions, email Cheryl Olman (caolman@umn.edu) to find out more about a new Service-Learning course she's teaching in the Fall. We'll spend September learning about how to build science mentoring relationships with 8th grade students, and then we'll spend October, November and December meeting at Murray Middle School (a 3-minute walk from the St Paul Campus, also right off the #3 bus line) to help the students get excited about discovering how the world works ... and completing the science fair project of their choosing. The 3-credit course meets M and W afternoons from 3-4:15. A brief interview is required to get a permission number for registration, so email Cheryl (caolman@umn.edu) soon to get on the interview schedule! 14. PSY 3960 (2 cr.) May Term Seminar on Marijuana Legalization This May Term, the Department of Psychology will be offering a 2-credit PSY 3960 Undergraduate Seminar Courses. The topic of this offering is "Legalize it? From Reefer Madness to Medical Marijuana." This course, taught by Scott Burwell, will examine historical and current issues surrounding cannabis legalization in the United States from public, government, and scientific perspectives. Search for "PSY 3960" in the Class Search (Summer 2016 term) for a more detailed description. Topics for PSY 3960 are rarely repeated from semester-to-semester, so take advantage of this particular course while you have the chance. PSY 3960 may be used toward the optional opportunity credits within the PSY Electives--make sure you have not met the maximum allowed from these types of courses. Please refer to your major requirement sheet or contact Psychology Advising if you have questions about how this might apply toward your degree.
