1.Ted Talks and Insomnia Cookies
This week Thursday, February 6th at 5:00pm, we are kicking off our first meeting of the semester. Meet in N639 Elliot Hall to meet the officers, enjoy cookies and join us for a viewing of psychology related TED talks. All are welcome; you do not need to be a member of Psi Chi to attend! 2.ACR Healthcare Group Open House
You've heard the advice, find a job that you are passionate about. Can this really be done? Can you actually love what you do? Can you really have more than just a job? Come to ACR's Open House event and discover our secret to why we love our jobs, where our education and career paths led us, and how we found our passions. This is a "stop-by-when-you-can" event! Representatives from ACR will be available to speak to students anytime between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30p.m on Thursday, February 6th (518/520 Science Teaching & Student Services). 3.U of M Job and Internship Fair
Come to the biggest student career fair in Minnesota! More than 200 companies and organizations will be at the U of M Job and Internship Fair recruiting for hundreds of jobs and internships. This year registered participants will get a free professional headshot photo for LinkedIn and other social media! Photographers will be on site during the entire event. The Fair will be held from 10:00am - 4:00pm on Friday, February 21st at the Minneapolis Convention Center (Free transportation to and from campus is provided!). Registration required via GoldPASS, $10 pre-register, $25 at the door. The fair is open to all students and recent alumni (2011 to present) of the U of M. 4.Free Kaplan Practice Tests
Kaplan is hosting Free MCAT, LSAT, GRE & DAT Practice tests on Saturday, February 22nd at the University of Minnesota. At the event you will take a free practice test under real-life proctored conditions. After the practice test, a Kaplan instructor will go over problems from the test and teach you Kaplan strategies to tackle your exam. Kaplan will also provide you with a free comprehensive score analysis and complete answers and explanations to the practice test on Sunday. Pre-registration is REQUIRED and space is limited. 5.First Pre-Law society Meeting
The University of Minnesota Pre-Law Society is excited to introduce its first members meeting of the semester on Tuesday, February 4th at 5:00 PM in 530B STSS. At the meeting we will welcome new members and officers, provide a preview of spring semester events and programs, and host a guest speaker! Our speaker is Mark Karon, JD, who is an experienced attorney and Director of USLS, and he will discuss his career and various pre-law opportunities on- and off-campus. 6.Sport Psychology Conference at Mankato
Minnesota State University, Mankato will be hosting the AASP-North Central Sport Psychology Conference (AASP-NCSPC) on February 21-22, 2014.The upper Midwest is an exciting up-and-coming region in the field of Sport & Exercise Psychology. In an effort to build collaboration throughout the region, the AASP-NCSPC as an opportunity for students and faculty from regional colleges and universities to come together. With opportunities to present and discuss the discipline, we would love to have you participate, either as a presenter or attendee, at this year's conference. 7.ADAPT Looking for Undergraduate Assistants for Summer
Are you searching for research experience on a federally-funded study to strengthen your training and expertise? Would you like to learn about parent-child relationships in families experiencing military deployment? Are you interested in observing parents interact with their school-aged children? Are you interested in observing parents interact with their school-aged children? Are you reliable, detail-oriented, and a team player? If you answered yes to these questions and are interested in learning about observational coding on the ADAPT (After Deployment: Adaptive Parenting Tools) project in summer 2014, contact Dr. Osnat Zamir to learn more, or check out ADAPT online. The work includes assessment of parenting behaviors and dyadic/triadic relationship interactions. The coding lab is located at the Department of Family Social Science on the St. Paul campus at the University of Minnesota.

8.Research Opportunity in Ed Psych
Looking for two to three undergraduate or graduate students to help as intervention tutors. The purpose of this project is to examine the effects of data-based instruction for improving young students' writing performance. The tutors will deliver writing intervention three times per week for 30-min per session over 13 weeks with students in grade 1 to 3. We will have one-hour weekly meeting. Undergraduate research assistants may receive course credit (Psy4993). This is a great opportunity to be involved in research and work with students in schools. 9.Latino Mental Health Research Training
The deadline for submission of application has been extended to February 10, 2014 for the NIH/NIMHD-funded Minority Health and Health Disparities International Training Program (MHIRT). Undergraduate, post-baccalaureates and pre-doctoral level students interested in conducting mental health research in Mexico during the summer of 2014 who meet the eligibility are encouraged to apply. Eligibility: 3.0 GPA or better, research career orientation, demonstrated interest in and/or commitment to reducing health disparities, excellent Spanish language oral and written skills, background in statistics and/or demonstrated social/behavioral sciences research experience, undergraduates with junior or senior class standing for 2013-2014, post-baccalaureates and pre-doctoral level students, U.S. citizen, permanent resident, non-citizen national, from a group with health disparities including African American, Asian American, Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander or other relevant groups. 10.Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Grants Available
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project. Thousands of students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. 11.The Carlson Child Development Lab is looking for research assistants
The Carlson Child Development Lab offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and earn college credits while working with preschool and school-aged children in a laboratory setting. Current research topics include self-control, perspective-taking and pretend play. Our undergraduates are an integral part of our lab, and participate in all levels of our research. From offering suggestions for developing protocols to running sessions with children and families, research assistants are afforded every opportunity to pursue their own interests and apply their own skills within our lab. As a Carlson Lab RA, you will interact with some of the leading scientists in the field of child development,. You will also have the chance to contribute to presentations of our research at international conferences and be included in future publications. This is the perfect opportunity to develop important research skills and relationships while learning about children's social cognitive development. Schedules are highly flexible. 12.Undergraduate Research in Personality, Indiv Differences, and Behavioral genetics Lab
Undergraduate research assistant opportunities are available in Dr. James Lee's lab. Dr. Lee is seeking undergraduate students who are interested in the area of measuring Individual Differences and Behavioral Genetics (human brain size and evolution). Students are expected to devote at least 5 hours per week performing literature readings, data collection, entry and attending lab meetings once a week. This is a volunteer position in Spring 2014 term but he would like students to take PSY 5993 Directed Research from Fall 2014 term. 15.STLF Spring Break Pay It Forward Tours!
What are you doing for Spring Break? Want to travel across the country while also making a difference in various communities? Then you should go on a STLF Pay It Forward Tour this Spring Break from March 14 to March 22. There will be 6 buses leaving from the U of M this year and traveling to 3 different destination city, Houston, Salt Lake City, and D.C. The tours will give you the opportunity to travel to multiple cities in the country, to perform various kinds of service projects along the way, to build lasting friendships, and to engage in leadership. 16.Volunteer Abroad This Summer
Do something amazing this summer in an incredible part of the world! Pour un Sourire d'Enfant, For a Child's Smile is a non-religiously affiliated NGO based in Cambodia. Each year we run summer camps for Cambodian children to prevent them from working on rubbish dumps or doing other dangerous jobs. We are looking for committed, enthusiastic volunteers to help run our amazing summer camp experience this year. The only cost for volunteers is the airfare to and from country, and spending money for travel/weekends (approximately $300 should be budgeted). Are you up to the challenge?
